Error in positions. Racism in spate

463

Just as a year ago, we lost the first game of the season against Newco, but the similarities end with the result.  Celtic bossed the first half and created the better chances in an even second period.  Goals change games and when Kyogo Furuhashi centred a cross for Odsonne Edouard, the game should have changed.  Instead, Odsonne took his eye off the ball, which bounced off his heel and ran to safety.

One week ago today, despite scoring six against St Mirren, I urged Ange Postecoglou to play Kyogo through the middle, if necessary moving Odsonne to the left.  He started Kyogo on the left yesterday and although Celtic enjoyed the bulk of possession, they were blunt in front of goal; Odsonne’s miss starkly demonstrating the point.  It was a foreseeable error from Ange, which he later accepted.

Although Newco were unable to keep possession throughout the first half, at home, exclusively in front of their own fans, news of their demise was exaggerated.  They survived the torrent when required and adjusted their game plan at halftime.  From that point, Celtic were no more than equal in the contest until Kyogo moved into the middle on 70 minutes.

After Kygo shot from a tight angle, Ryan Christie reacted animatedly towards his teammate, presumably complaining that the Japanese striker did not square the ball for him to finish in front of goal.

I’m never keen on Celtic players shouting at each other and suspect this show of agitation contributed to Kyogo passing instead of shooting moments later, when the clear shot at goal was on.  Our Imperious Icon could be forgiven for wondering why bother laying chances on a plate for others after Edouard’s earlier miss.

Just like the first goal we lost to Newco last season, yesterday’s goal was lost from a set piece but I’m not pressing the panic button on this one.  Last year we were unable to form a straight defensive line, it was largely the central defenders who were causing the problems.  The defenders were correctly marshalled yesterday, the goal was lost because none of the others picked up a late runner.

The transformation in Celtic in such a short period has been beyond any of our expectations.  We will continue to improve and I expect will top the table after Newco’s visit on 2 January.  In losing twice so early, however, we have put ourselves under unwelcome pressure.  Playing the beautiful stuff is not always rewarded.

Last week they came after the Japanese, yesterday, they came after the Irish.  Racism in Scotland is in spate, it was even given a police escort post-match in Glasgow yesterday.  It is not the responsibility of Celtic to win so often that the mob have no opportunity to wreak havoc on the city.

Our political leaders and police cannot ignore this problem away.  Scotland is home to many cultures, creeds and ethnicities.  All will suffer unless the laws of the land are enforced.

Neither Starfelt or McCarthy are renowned for their skill or ability on the ball.

Starfelt wasn’t signed as a big physical center half. Or if he was someone didnt do their job We were led to believe he was more than capable with the ball at his feet, all the defenders are being encouraged to play out.

I really don’t know why you’re arguing with me about the type of players who fit in to Ange’s system. Have you been watching the way we play or have any understanding about his footballing style and philosophy? We play quickly, on the ground, from the keeper all the way through the team. Defenders need to be able to take the ball under pressure and pass to a midfielder who can do likewise and move the ball forward quickly. We defend high up the park, press with intensity, win the ball back as quickly as we can and play the game in the opposition half, regardless of the opposition

The type of players you describe just don’t fit in with that sort of system

It’s not exactly revolutionary these days, but the lack of compromise and the intensity for the whole game that Ange demands is not normal

    Huns never apologise to anybody.

    And therein lies the problem.

Why should they, when they have carte blanche from government and police to be the fountainhead for the racist, poisonous filth that neither government not police could get away with, for fear of international sanctions?

Easiest thing is to get yourself a proxy. Oh, look!

I’ve lived in various countries in Africa, east Asia and elsewhere – places commonly sniffed at as ‘banana republics’, and I laugh hollowly when I look at Scotland.

“We conceded goals in the Netherlands from two ridiculous defensive mistakes. Otherwise we didn’t concede over 180 minutes against a decent technical side”

  6. How could I have forgotten about Ntcham when I listed players that have gone in past 7 months 🤔😂

  7. CELTIC MAC on 30TH AUGUST 2021 9:13 PM

They were missing 3 players 2 of which were left backs.

We played them missing our 1st pick, centreback, leftback, rightback, rightwinger and arguably one of the best midfielder main scotland in mccarthy based on his playing career. That is half a team pal, a handful of player, but I am sure you will find a reason why none of that matters.

So long as we replace Christie with a good left winger/ midfielder I will be happy, will not miss him.

Eduard has come to his celtic end, great until 18 months ago not so much of late. Replace him with targetman with desire to get in the box and attack the ball will we will be fine.

Would like a leftback with pace, stamina and crossing ability and a dominant centreback who is comfortable on the ball.

The logical explanation, given what we’ve seen from Ange’s Celtic, is that he places technical ability ahead of defensive ability.

That’s just the defence. It’s likely to be even more the case in midfield

  10. Tictaewin

Funny I was thinking the same.

The club and, more importantly, the supporters, have been screwed.

UEFA’s precious champions League TV schedule can’t possibly be contaminated.

Police Scotland – complete with bigoted officers who think we are “puddle drinkers” – can’t do two matches in a day.

Too busy escorting racists to the Racist FC match.

    As for our club?

  15. UNCLE JIMMY on 30TH AUGUST 2021 11:22 PM

“Otherwise”might be doing a lot of heavy lifting in that statement but in the context of the discussion it makes sense

The two goals were individual errors, poor judgement and technique, not tactical or systemic.

  16. Why does ange not see we need a quality tough centre half or two . At one of there many set pieces on Sunday I noticed a sevco line up of 4 6ft 4 in plus guys ready to challenge for the cross , a ploy they have used against us constantly . Other teams too know were weak in defence . alas our old failings raised its head on Sunday again , Our weakness in midfield , mcgregor . Christie, turnbull gave us nothing ,again overawed by the rough tough sevcoites .they have bullied our lot for the past couple of seasons . I thought our new boss would have done his homework on our rivals and tackled our deficiencies.

  17. stebhoy

I thought two o em were right backs

Two keepers too. They had injuries as well. And the last time their replacement goalie played against us, for Livingstone, we put six past him!

Not sure I’d count James McCarthy as a miss, as of now he has less game time than Marvin (Morton) Kompnner, remember him? Boerrigter played nearly a full half, I was there to witness it. Never did see Hughie Maxwell though, you’ll need Tontine Tim for that.

And while I think Greg Taylor was missed, many on here thought it was a blessing in disguise, though it showed me we didn’t sign him as a left back.

Good effort though, and I do appreciate any well intended response, and any in good spirit.

  25. So it’s farewell to Eddie and probably Christie. Good luck to both. They contributed enormously to the success of Celtic during the nine in a row years.

To the point it was inconceivable they would ever be out of the starting eleven.

Now, it feels strange to not be concerned with their departure. Eddie just hasn’t recovered in football terms since COVID. Christie was ruined by the positions he was asked to play and by a shoot on sight policy.

Getting good money for them with so little left on the contracts is good business.

    It’s a funny old game.
