Ethics and manipulating a move

289

I have known players from Europe to fly into Scotland during a transfer window for a medical with a local club without their current employer’s knowledge.  This tactic explains the vast majority of overnight stays in a different country by a footballer in these circumstances.  Our errant employee may or may not have been on such a trip.

This is now an HR matter and due process will be followed.  His contract will be worth a significant sum and no one will want to pay that because an employee was not given the right to respond to allegations before action was taken.

Even then, there are reasons not to act immediately.  If the player has a club in Spain lined up, it puts money in his pocket if he becomes a free agent.  Of more concern is the precedent.  There are many players at Celtic who could earn several times their salary by moving this summer, contracts would be worth millions more if they were free agents.

It would be highly unethical behaviour to break lockdown rules in order to try force a move, as a free agent or not, but this is football and a fortune is at stake for both player and agent.  How sure are you another issue will not crop up during the European qualifying campaign?  Celtic’s business model depends on retaining contracted players who want out of their contracts or selling them for a fee.  Players cannot be incentivised to break rules, Covid or other.

The club have lots to consider before acting.  My guess is that their best interests are served by scheduling the appropriate HR meetings soon after the transfer window closes.  At least the left back question has become a little clearer this week, so every cloud……

  1. The Battered Bunnet on

Full backs, centre half, midfielder, centre forward all on the assorted wanted lists.

I think we need a lock picker, a safe cracker, the kind of player who conjures a chance from imagination rather than by systematic process.

We’ve had guys like Nakamura and Moravcik in the past, but they’re hens teeth to find and not easily blended into a pressing team.

But one of the issues we have – as we saw again at Killie – is that a pressing team is blunt against opponents set up with a central block and wide players deployed as second full backs. We have lots of the ball, there are few transitions, and little if any space to run into.

I think we need a little magic, some imagination. An artist.

  2. Hearing that Ajeti will be confirmed tomorrow, permanent deal. Toney still a possibility. As reported, Duffy loan deal being progressed. A few options being explored for another CH and a LB but no further information.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Some disagree but I think wee Paddy is the man. Game changer when its not working for Forrest. Get him running directly at goal instead of trying to hit the byeline, threading passes for the two strikers and allowing him to shoot on sight.

Clearly, not in Nakas or Lubos class but closest we’ll get right now I’d say.

Agree on Duffy. Solid, commanding, toughen us up a bit at CB. Perfect partner for Julienn. Hope it gets done.

  6. TBB,

Would be great to get a player like that in,but they don’t come cheap. Was reading that David Silva, has been offered a private Jet by his new team.

  7. The Battered Bunnet – That’s exactly what we need fella. Too much greeting going on about centre halves but unlocking stuffy defences is exactly what we need.

I’d move Moi there, play Calum there or buy a Roberts-like in his pomp. We also need a marauding LW in a Scott Sinclair season 1 kinda way.

Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair left side…….ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh….niiiiiice.

If we are still chasing Toney even with the Ajeti deal looking done, then Eddy is surely for the off this window.

    SIEMPRE,

Think that’s the position he has been playing for Boro.

Yeah, not sure if they’re trying to get him back but I hope we’re in the loop.

Totally agree, I cringe when I read that. By all means take the man to task if you think he is underachieving, but don’t use hun terminology.

PS : Additionally any valid points are lost when such terms are used.

  11. Rolling Stone,

Not necessarily – I think Griff’s days are numbered & we have a ton of matches to play.

Eddie – Ajeti – Toney – Klimala is a pretty decent slate and hopefully 2 up front.

    Edouard off?

    Not necessarily.

Lennon likes striker options (see previous by other posters)

Bayo is gone. If Griff can’t be fully relied on then Edouard, Klimala, Ajeti and OTHER gives Neil his four.

  13. Duffy would not be coming to sit on the bench. I suspect Ajer is for the off, especially if Lennybhoy suggests another CH is being pursued.

Interesting posts re Sevco player sales.

On paper, they have – perhaps – just four sellable assets who, ON A GOOD DAY, could raise £4m+ each.

Players whose reputation has either been enhanced or hasn’t been diminished by their association with Sevco.

However, each of these four have specific issues which, potentially, make them less marketable in this window.

    Katic : injured

Barasic : decent but untested and, allegedly, suffers from depression

Tavernier : decent player but untested. Good crosser, terrible defender

Morelos : where do you begin?

  15. Raman Bhardwaj@ramanbhardwajTV·3m

Celtic have completed the signing of striker Albian Ajeti. 4 year contract. He joins from West Ham in a £5m deal.

“One of the many examples – N’tcham, he has been the shadow of the player he could have been for us because of the “business” side of the game.”

    ————————-

You’ll have to explain that one to me. How is the business side preventing Ntcham from performing or being played? Is he on a bonus structure whereby he gets another million if he starts 10 games in a row?

“I’ve got a different philosophy in life from most Scots and part of that is looking at things holisticaly.”

    ——————————

I’ve no ide if most Scots are or aren’t holisitic but, personally, I have always found it a boastful word which rarely lives up to its billing. I’m satisfied if someone is thorough or comprehensive.

“Now it was convenient for the business to let Lustig think they were taking up his extension option until they decided who was replacing him and from a business perspective that makes sense here’s what I think…”

    ————————————

It was convenient from a football sense too. We don’t want players protecting themselves as they prepare to land a contract elsewhere. Your argument was that treating players like we treated Lustig would prevent players from wanting to come. We have signed a wheen of players since then- none of them are overly sentimental when it comes ot self interest.

“Why is the squad always managed for the convenience of the business, it’s the tail wagging the dog?”

Why did you stop beating your wife? In short, I don’t accept the implicit assertion. In BS management speak, befitting the use of the word holistic, there is a symbiotic relationship tp be had from a proactive integration of the multiple spheres of activity involved in running a modern go-ahead fitba outfit.
