Ethics, Fifa, support for Beram

823

Remember when Barcelona were regarded as the model of an ethical football club?    I don’t know if it’s just every time I see Tumbling Neymar that I feel a little less affinity with brand Barca but that image has proven to be a mirage.

The clubs tax affairs, specifically over compensation to Lionel Messi, brought it into more disrepute than could be compensated for by the ethically immaculate (cough) ‘Qatar’ emblazoned across their shirts.  Tax is not just for the wee guys.

Now Fifa (you know you have issues when these guys can get moralistic with you) have banned the club from signing players for the next two transfer windows and a fine of 450k Swiss francs after investigations into the signing of 10 foreign minors over the period 2009-2013.  Their accomplices, the Spanish FA, were fined 500 Swiss francs for their role in the episode.

We’ll see if the Spanish FA have the equivalent of What-school-did-you-go-to Ogilvie in charge, who is able to arbitrarily change which transfer windows the ban applies to, in order to assist the club.

Speaking of Ogilvie, after leaving now-liquidated Rangers he continued his work at Hearts, who administrator Bryan Jackson yesterday admitted were themselves facing liquidation.  Ogilvie had a legal responsibility for Rangers during the period they introduced the ruinous EBT scam, some of which was found to be illegal during the First Tier Tribunal, the remainder of which is currently subject to an Upper Tribunal deliberation.

Indeed, the man, who remains president of the SFA, pocketed a £93k EBT, but he can claim no credit for the liquidation of Hearts, which was brought about by the liquidation of the club’s shareholders and lenders.  If there were two clubs in the whole world you would ask karma to liquidate……….

Before you react to this acknowledged possibility, check, are you a fan, or player and fan?  If you are a fan, feel free to proclaim the situation loudly.  If you are player and fan, stop.  The SFA don’t want you proclaiming an acknowledged possibility, as though you were a fan.  Hearts are going bust, but the only man in football allowed to say this is the Hearts administrator.

I see a bit of push-back against Beram Kayal, which is harsh.  After a very promising start Beram is increasingly out of the picture at Celtic and needs to construct a narrative for himself and potential future employers.  Everything he said was almost certainly true: he was ‘done’ by Lee McCulloch, leaving him with a poor first-hand experience of our game.  Why would he retain a love for a league which is offers him nothing?

The comments about Liverpool and Manchester United showing an interest in him prior to his injury tells you lots about how the game works.  Promising, though he was, he was never in this class, but all clubs watch hundreds of players every year.  I see no reason why his agent would be unable to get Beram scouted by a couple of top English clubs.  This would have been reported to the player, but should not be confused as being a qualified interest.

  1. My Dad pointed out “the Gas Works Cup” to me at Celtic Park a few times.

It was called officially something else but I canny remember.

    As usual.

  2. CQN’s Three Lions night at the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club, originally planned for Friday 23rd May, has been moved to the new date of Friday 6th June.

Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will all be there to entertain us – the Q&A session will be hosted by BRTH. Paul is coming down too.

CQN has a limited number of tickets for this event – they only cost £3 – so if you would like to come along please email david@CQNMagazine.com

We had a great night in the Greenock club last May with Willie Wallace so really looking forward to going back down there again!

  3. It seemed so simple as well, ask the guys on CQN about the trophy I thought. They’ll know.

you might think that is where the inaccuracy lies, I could not possibly comment.

Though, it could equally be that he got 15/1 instead of 10/1…….what are the odds?

  5. One of my favourite stories of a Celtic player ‘doing’ one of thems.

    Glasgow Cup final(?) – late 60s/early 70s.

Alex Macdonald – dirty bassa – trying to play the hard man.

David Cattanach – a close pal of Davie Hay – decided to sort him out. Tackled him at neck level and Macdonald was carted off on a stretcher.

During the interval big Jock gave him à bollocking and walked away. Then Sean Fallon approached and said to the young defender:

“Allright Catt? Can I just say that that was one of the finest tackles I have ever seen?!”

It’s not that important, just no one in work can remember.

My dad once had the Celtic park tour and was told that we played them an beat them but their name was engraved on the trophy. Since we won the game we kept the trophy.

Many , many years since I was also on the Celtic Stadium tour .

When we got to the Trophy Room the tour guide told the story …

We have a trophy that the Zombies claim as theirs…

A one off competition was organised ( I thought it was the Coronation Cup but may be wrong )

There was no trophy to present , probably because the SFA were too tight to pay for it.

The FoD provided a Trophy from their Blue Room for a competition …

.It was a trophy that was no longer played for

as they were the last winners in the early 1900’s theirs is the last name on the trophy

A while after the final the FoD asked for the trophy back ….

Celtic told them that we had won it fair and square and were keeping it.

Sorry for the tardy reply, but the man wanted his piece of flesh.

Firstly, thanks, glad somebody reads my offerings.

As I said, I get the frustration, but remember this.

When a cheat gets away with it so often, they are waiting for you to blow your top, to loose it, because when you do, they stand back and point.

Especially when the authorities openly favour and facilitate the cheat.

    Auldheid @ 13:04 on 2 April, 2014

Possibly as disturbing a football-related post as I have read on here for some time.

When someone of the calibre of Auldheid would consider giving up on Scottish Football because of possible corruption within (and at the head of) the SFA then alarm bells are ringing loudly. Reputable and capable people involved with football in Scotland really need to take notice and action.

In the last year or so there have been at least 2 fan surveys; one from the SFA/SL, and the other from Celtic. I completed both and made specific reference to the apparent misapplication and distortion of rules with respect to the practises and consequent liquidation of RFC. Sporting competition is redundant if rules are not adhered to or applied transparently, equally and fairly.

The problem with Our Game is not the absence of a Rangers but rather the propagation of a lie. A lie facilitated by an apparently corrupt football administration that does anything and everything to support the illusion that the club currently ploughing its’ way through the lower leagues of Scottish football is the same club that deceived its’ way to success before crashing and burning to death in a morass of debt.

Scottish Football does not need such a club.

Scottish Football does not need a corrupt SFA.

Let a new Rangers return, but one that plays within its means to the same transparent and fair rules as every other club.

Football is a lesser sport without decent supporters like Auldheid.

hendrix67 – it was the Glasgow Exhibition Cup – won by Rangers in 1901. They then donated this to be played for in a one-off tournament, the British League Cup, which Celtic won. Celtic kept the trophy but they expected it back.

  22. hendrix67

A tournament was organised between the winners and runners up of the Scottish & English leagues in 1902 to raise funds for the victims of the (first) Ibrox Disaster.

Rangers put up a trophy they had won in a Glasgow Trade Fair tournament

    the previous year.

Celtic won the trophy. Rangers expected Celtic to return it, but Celtic maintained it was an officially organised tournament so they should keep it. The trophy remains in the Trophy Room at Celtic Park.

Today THEY want to have THEIR cake and eat by retaining trophies but not paying THEIR debt.

But a Celtic player is to be punished for singing in a pub.
