Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

    Yip. Pointless having the cash without a purpose.

    A few years ago when Southampton were going bust, I suggested we buy them and effectively double our football operation. We seemed to know how to run a profitable football business, Southampton had a complete infrastructure, and there were many opportunities to benefit from. The cost would have been around £15M for the entire club.

    5 years on it now appears as though we’re some kind of feeder club for Southampton.

    But hey, we’re rolling in it.

    Cash is pointless without a use for it.

    I have not read back or watched Peter Lawwell presedential address and I wont waste my time watching it. We already know what it contains. It will be new labour spin based on Saatchi and Saatchi PR.

    Made up policy on the hoof. As I have been saying for years.

    I like the Euro League draw. If we can improve and integrate the new players and bring on say two youngsters then we COULD and it should be our aim to still be in it after Christmas.

    If Ronny proves to be a dumpling and I dont think he is and with the huns guaranteed promotion

    Has WVD or KC left the building yet ?

    So any predictions for the Dundee game?

    =============

    Slight difference. Last year we qualified for the CL. May have only kicked the bucket down the road for a year but still qualified. We probably expected more investment before the group stage and that may have helped us this year. I suppose this day was coming when the sales of 2012 team began.

    I hope any Yes voting fan who is heading to Salzburg on the 18th thinks ahead and sorts out a proxy vote;

    By proxy: If you can’t go to the polling station you can appoint a person of your choice to cast your vote on your behalf, either at a polling station or by post.

    An emergency proxy can be appointed if after the date of deadline for receiving proxy votes you find that you are unavoidable and unexpectedly away from your registered address on referendum day.

    You must be registered to vote by Tuesday 2 September 2014 before you can apply to vote by post or proxy.

    For further details please contact the Elections Office on 0141 287 7777.

    If you are a no voter don’t worry about it… you can vote on the 19th like the rest of the no voters.

    Was not being facetious,just the fact last year we were all moaning about the lack of signings,and proper preparation.The guys we brought in last year did not play,the guys we brought in this year were rushed in far too quickly.Different problems with the same outcome.

    With the amount of loan guys,I can see the same problems next year.Maybe not.I am an optimist.

    Players too big to stay at Celtic? Never heard of him or many of the other recruits that we purchased and gave them a shop window to show their talents to the ‘big english clubs’ before cashing in! Big fish in a wee pond – either we move to a bigger pond or we just keep trading away and winning ten in a row.

    Another thing, if we are the only potential spenders in Scottish football, is there no talent left in our country? What a state Scottish fitbaw is in, thank goodness the Celtic support are faithful.

    I wonder why Auldheid,, BRTH, Morrissey and Canamalar bother with resolution 12 as well. Every Celtic fan and shareholder should get the lawyers onto them for their criminally repugnant stance never mind morally and they are the custodians of a sporting establishment. Deliberate Negligence due to their inability to expand the business due entirely to their own greed and incompetence.

    We as agroup of shareholders should set up a fund for legal insurance to pursue Resolution 12 to the bitter end.

    I still believe Deila has a better starting point than Lennon had.

    At least with the loans we have the option to buy(with exception of Denayer). It could work out well but at least no Balde/Pukki/Boerrigter scenario if not.

    I am an optimist as well but I do not have full faith that Deila and those above him will be the ones to improve our performance on the pitch.
