Europa failure would compound acute challenge for also-rans

1087

I’m not going to laugh at results against Luxembourgers or Lithuanians – it’s not so long since Gibraltarians bloodied the nose of a team who went on to become invincible treble winners. Scottish clubs have a long history of pitching up in June and July wholly unprepared for European football.

These results only retain the ability to concern if they are not resolved by remarkably improved performances. Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic grew in stature last summer until they became a competitive Champions League team in the autumn. Others may do the same this season.

What will be clear long before the lottery of the European play-off rounds, is where the gaping chasm exists in Scottish football: are Celtic our only team competitive in Europe, or is there at least one other?

Neither you nor I care who competes in the Europa League, but failure there if Celtic progress to the Champions League will compound an already acute challenge for the Scottish also-rans.

  2. The papers have Celtic selling both Armstrong and Dembele after the CL qualifiers are done.

    Ultimately, if we fail to qualify I could see a scenario where both players are sold. However, I am an optimist and I’m very confident we will qualify and Armstrong will sign a new deal. Once that happens, I think Dembele will remain at least until January.

    We’ll see where we are at the end of the window but I’d be happy with Musonda/Roberts and another striker.

    An Tearmann/Starry Plough,

    Thanks. My quiet life is about to be tested as the young fella has 4 lads coming over for the Shamrock Rovers game at the weekend.

    Gary Og is apparently playing in Drogheda after the game, so it’ll be busy.

Celtic have been good at holding out for top dollar deals so I don’t think Rangers should even pick up the phone for anything less than £12 million”

    Oh my aching sides.

    I try not to get too excited about signings until i see Lennybhoy or Catman confirm, so ill keep my powder dry on Musonda until then……………………………………………………….would be good though

    Our visit to the River Boyne and the battlesite was as eye opening as it was informative.

    Just a lovely serene beautiful place.

    That’s the way I’ll remember The Boyne. Others can remember it as they wish.

    There’s attention to detail (B. Rodgers) … and then there’s Sevco’s OCD green boots ban because another team wears them.

    It really must be cold in Celtic’s shadow.

  11. In the 1950’s my uncle Charlie, who lived in Dublin, took me Drogheda and the Boyne. Cannot remember too much about the “celebrated” river, but my memory recalls that I came away thinking that on a good day I could have jumped across the Boyne. Thereafter, apart from acknowledging the beauty of the place, it has never been very significant in my life.

    I assumed it must be Hibs – they are Sevco’s main rivals after all.

    Or it could be just another pathetic PR stunt to try to attach themselves to Celtic. I make that about four in the last week!

  13. To be, or not to be: that is the question:

    Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer

    The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

    Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

    And by opposing end them. To die: to sleep;

    No more; and by a sleep to say we end

    The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks

    That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation

    Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;

    To sleep: perchance to dream: aye, there’s the rub;

    For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,

    When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

    Must give us pause: there’s the respect

    That makes calamity of so long life;

    For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,

    The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,

    The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay,

    The insolence of office, and the spurns

    That patient merit of the unworthy takes,

    When he himself might his quietus make

    With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,

    To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

    But that the dread of something after death,

    The undiscover’d country from whose bourn

    No traveler returns, puzzles the will,

    And makes us rather bear those ills we have

    Than fly to others that we know not of?

    Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,

    And thus the native hue of resolution

    Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,

    And enterprises of great pith and moment

    With this regard their currents turn awry

    And lose the name of action.

    Alternatively the could just go all in with their Zombie season ticket monies on Euro Nightmare in the 8:45 at Hamilton tonight and be done with it…

  14. With the BTC Decision 2 days away I took this from BRTH’s analysis the other day.

    EBTS are given post performance on a judgement of that actual performance AFTER the period of it.

    Wages are contracted to be paid performance by performance DURING the period of the performance according to stipulations in the contract for that performance.

    The former is based on trust that performance will be rewarded to the level of the latter. A side letter guaranteeing an equivalent level of payment has to be a breach of trust by its very nature, ie no trust in the person contracting.

    To undermine that principle by determining that the ebts with side letters are not a breach of trust would tear down the walls that separate one type of tax arrangement from the other.

    The parties to the arrangement should have no bearing on the decision but given the lack of support or recognition of the value of the principles at play in Scotland this might not be the slam dunk it should be.

    I tried to keep that as short as possible :)

    Thanks.

    I read the comments in the Herald Article this morning…

    One guy thought The Boyne was in Ulster. Another thought that it was about his/her Presbyterian heritage.

    * As you know the Boyne runs through Leinster.

    *The other Herald commentator should read the original rules of Orange Order Membership,

    “Resolved that no member is to introduce a papist or Presbyterian, quaker or Methodist, or any persuasion but a protestant.” [The Formation of the Orange Order 1795-1798, Page 125]

    Maybe these guys also think there is a club in Glasgow going after 55 Titles and that Glibby and Co are Fit and Proper Board Members?

    Chris McLaughlin BBC is reporting there has been no contact between Celtic and Chelsea regarding Musonda.

    Brendan said talks have been ongoing since January regarding the player we are after.

    I also expected something big re. Res12 after Winning Captains post to Auldheid. I must have missed that too.

    The rest is just like all other podcasts. Personal opinions on Celtic related matters so worth a listen even though I don’t agree at times.
