Europe a sideshow to league duty at Fir Park

1000

A Europa League tie against Rennes on Thursday would normally set midweek pulses racing but when Celtic have such a crucial game ahead in the fight for second place Neil Lennon has a major decision to make, does he rest players for the Motherwell game?

Sunday’s game at Fir Park is set to become one of the most important games of the season for Celtic and I’m sure Neil would prefer a clear midweek to prepare for it, but resting players, with the inherent increased chance of defeat, could further damage fragile morale.

Celtic need a confidence boosting win but they need heads focussed on beating Motherwell even more. The consequences of defeat on Thursday are unpleasant, but the consequences of defeat on Sunday are incalculable.

Just adding on from your last paragraph – possibly the biggest root to our problems is Lennon has no control of his own footballing budget – he probably doesnt even know what it is.

The man isnt in the room when we are negotiating a new contract with Kayals agent. he has no say on how far we push the boat out for a man he might regard as the single most important player at the club.

He isnt in the room when we talk to prospective players’ agents and has no say in how far we push the boat out in terms of wages for the players he has identified.

Wily old Harry Redknapp made his career on wheeling and dealing. He knew what his pot was and he did a fantastic job of ‘creating’ new money with player trading.

Lawwell made my skin crawl when he used the phrase ‘intellectual purchasing’.

This is the second reason we dont get the players we need, and instead get ‘projects’ or the ‘take you pick out of Pot A – African players, and Pot B – Asian players’ and il go out and try and get one or two in.

Chris Sutton wasnt an ‘intellectual purchase’ from a financial point of view. signed for £6m with a further £7 in wages over 5 years.

John Hartson roughly the same again.

Lawwell would insist Lennon showed beyond a shadow of doubt how that one player will directly gain Celtic more than £13m. Through merchandising, prize money etc.

The truth is they didnt – not directly.

Indirectly they helped to take us as high as I have known in the 30+ years.

But its all about pounds, pennies and shillings – the very thing we have squandered by not looking beyond the end of Lawwells nose (or bonus structure)

To pay for leaders you have to spend big money on guys in their late 20’s or early 30’s.

That is a big, big no no for Celtic.

Look at our squad – and think why is there not a leader about the place..

    Therein lies your answer.

  13. Marrakesh Express on

Whether its his column in the Daily Ranger, the Sunday Mail or on Snyde, Uncle Tom Keevins feels free to hatchet our club and our support at every turn. And he acts with impunity. There is not a chance he’d get away with a fraction of this criticism over Govan way and he knows that. The impending tax case and admin/receivership/liquidation of the huns was kept well planked under the carpet until as late in the day as possible, therefore saving the orc from anguish for as long as possible.

But when it comes to us its a negativity fest. Its never balanced out by Keevins or any other member of the LL unless its to say that we have just as big a problem with our fans. Some of them should read the marvellous post by Kitalba 11:12 yesterday, just to remind them of what the club they hold in high esteem (over us) really stands for.

Uncle Tom was at it again last night (ok I wont listen again) while the tax case and admin issue was played down and underhyped. I said 8 years ago that the DR should have been banned for life from CP after the Newcastle stitch-up of our players. Today, I would ban one journo for a start and its Keevins. He is a constant purveyor of grief and makes a living out of causing trouble at our expense.

Is this the Steven Naismith that tried to “do” the Aberdeen player last weekend and done himself instead?

The same Steven Naismith whose goal celebrations have been decidedly masonic in nature?

The Steven Naismith who sneers and snarls at opponents and referees and dives when there is a gentle breeze blowing in his direction?

The very same Steven Naismith who typifies everything that is rotten about the Huns?

If it is…..wouldn’t it be really ironic if Karma has paid him a visit.

  19. Victor Wanyama should start in midfield.

One thing for sure is that if NL took the job under those terms and conditions he knows, he’s now on his lonesome, and may not get a fourth window look in.

His two predecessors were also suspiciously viewed as not having full control over who was, and wasn’t signed, or indeed what the budget was, so no change there.

He’s struggling, and I wish him nothing but good will, but “basics” have not been righted, or maintained and he’s the same as any other manager regardless of where you shop you will get pluses and minuses, in the transfer market.

I believe he missed the biggest most important signing when we failed to bring in Ramis and that was a long time ago now.

If he changes the way the team is set out, ( which is where we started ) it’s his only chance, it’s not a mystery.

    players or coaches to blame?

    Both culpable.

    But real issue is coaching.

Our. System and lack of proper implimentation is the biggest issue.

Opposing coaches know our tactic of playing two deep lying square passing centre miss means our only threat is from wide.

The spacing is awful all over the field and there is no cohesion so we dont have a proper team structure.

Our ballwatching combined with no specific task for our central defenders leaves us permanently vulnerable.

Zero off the ball movement and a fear from players to take responsibility.

All of these problems could be addressed at coaching level.

Unfortunately we don’t have those personnel at present.
