Europe in July, heavy legs and waning concentration

602

After losing the second leg against Salzburg in last season’s Champions League 3rd qualifying round, Qarabag eliminated Twente Enschede on away goals before having a good Europa League group stage.

Draws home and away to Saint Etienne, a home draw against Inter after a two goal defeat in the San Siro, and a win and a loss against Dnipro is enough form to suggest Celtic have a match on their hands.

On the positive side, Qarabag are also preseason, play on grass and Baku, their home city, is four hours ahead of Glasgow, so they will have a small jetlag adjustment to make for Wednesday’s game.  The final whistle will go after 1:30 in the morning Baku time.  Players find the latter part of any big game tiring, more so early in the season, so we have to push hard late in this game.  Qarabag will be vulnerable as concentration wanes and legs get heavy.

This tie feels very much like the Shakhter Karagandy play-off tie two years ago.  Shakhter arrived with a solid two goal lead, but an impassioned Celtic Park pushed us over the line.  A similar intensity will be required on and off the field on Wednesday.

What’s our chances?  Not sure, but we’ve a serious challenge on our hands.

The CQN Magazine site is not loading for me at all in Seattle.

It gets half way to loading, then goes blank and into a continual loop of attempting to reload.

This is on an iPad BTW, not attempted a desktop, or laptop yet.

” how on earth can the potential crowd on Wednesday be worthy of headlines on national news “. So true. When I tell my friends in England about the bias, they don`t believe me. They trust me in everything else I say but simply won`t accept what I say about media bias in Scotland. It is very frustrating. And as someone said earlier, it would seem that the Huns think the media is biased against them!! I wish they would offer some evidence and put it side by side with our examples !

adi dasler … thanks for that … I’ll be honest and admit that I only understood about every second word! I told you I was a computer numpty! I think I will have to take Sipsini’s advice and go straight to tech support (my neice!)

  5. Detest the Scottish media.

Hopefully Johansen will realise that it will never get better for him than Celtic (like Broony has). I actually think that Liam Henderson is a better player than Johansen.

Forget about loans…he would be in my team!

Like yourself (possibly) I am still uncertain about Joe Hansen. I prefer the class-oozing style of Biton or the skill of GMS to the industry of Joe H but his being constantly in the face of the opposition is a great asset. I rate Henderson but he would not be in the team instead of Joe, he would be in instead of Biton and that will only happen when Nir needs a rest. Just as well I rate Ronny D so highly!

I also believe Liam Henderson has a big future, with Celtic

I find it strange he is one of 3 players not to have featured so far in pre-season

Liam, Dylan McGeoch and Derk Boerigter ?

I think Dylan and Derk could go ?

Rumours they could be joined by Stokes, Scepovic and VVD ?

Whitedoghunch, his podcast with Gordon is very good.

Gordon’s assertion that players like Messi, Iniesta, Ronaldo etc are the best so far, is interesting.

He says because of the law changes regarding the tackle from behind and the better players getting more protection (doesn’t apply here mind you), we are now seeing players blossom more.

Graham Hunter’s podcast with Kevin Bridges is very funny plus Kevin knows a lot about football.

Graham along with Jim Spence and William McIlvaney are the only football journalists from Scotland who are worth listening to.

Liam Henderson looks like a great prospect for us, he has skill, heart and toughness.

A few posters, last year, made references to Liam having some of Davie Hay’s attributes on the pitch, which to me is a very good thing in Liam’s favour.

  15. JJ and Cowieboy

Nice to see that you rate Liam too!

I like the fact that for one so young, he doesn”t hide and is hard as nails. Good passer too. His set up for the egocentric Swede’s goal v Inter milan was superb.

  16. Looking forward to game tomorrow night. Although £20 for a Carrier bag is a bit much. :)

Wee bit pissed off with club though.

Received email and text stating money would be taken from my account on Tues July 28th as I am on home cup scheme. I get paid on 27th every month so decided not to move funds between my 2 accounts (one spending cash account and other my direct debit bill account). Club then request funds on the 25th of July from my account so 1 ticket purchased and 3 declined. Called ticket office today to sort tix out which was dealt with professionally and with ease.

When I queried why the request was made 3 days early I was told that club sent the request to BACS and BACS requested early. Sounds plausible.

But here was me sitting listening to that having worked almost 20 years within banking and finance having developed software systems that deal with BACS systems daily. Every file sent to BACS has to be of a format laid out by BACS. Each file has a header record and a trailer record with all the individual bank requests to people’s bank accounts between these. The trailer record includes a total in amount of all recorded BACS requests in file and no of requests plus other standard BACS data.

The header record includes info of the company making request such as the companies uniques BACS security info, the companies bank account details etc. BUT importantly the header record also contains a date to process the payment request details, for that BACS file.

The file has to be with BACS at least 3 days prior to request date in order that BACS put the file through their checking software and place for processing.

The ticket office fecked up on this and subsequently any charges I receive from my bank for returned payments will be sent to our club.

I was more annoyed at the fact my seats could have been sold to general public as I did not receive notification from club until today’s post arrived advising that request had been returned.

MWD said AYE and getting that off my chest.

To those qualities you mention, you could also add the one that I believe Kojo thought so essential ie Liam showed improvement from his earlier games (which were reasonable enough anyway).

    Right, goodnight from me.

Joe Hanson is a player that I would’nt like to lose, we are building a good team and I’ll be sad to see Virgil go.

That, I can live with as we don’t have the finance to keep him, as to me he is out of our league at this time.

Like Paul67 stated…I think (cn) the bubble will burst in the money game sky/bt will get their fingers burnt as people change to a cheaper option.
