Europe in July, heavy legs and waning concentration

602

After losing the second leg against Salzburg in last season’s Champions League 3rd qualifying round, Qarabag eliminated Twente Enschede on away goals before having a good Europa League group stage.

Draws home and away to Saint Etienne, a home draw against Inter after a two goal defeat in the San Siro, and a win and a loss against Dnipro is enough form to suggest Celtic have a match on their hands.

On the positive side, Qarabag are also preseason, play on grass and Baku, their home city, is four hours ahead of Glasgow, so they will have a small jetlag adjustment to make for Wednesday’s game.  The final whistle will go after 1:30 in the morning Baku time.  Players find the latter part of any big game tiring, more so early in the season, so we have to push hard late in this game.  Qarabag will be vulnerable as concentration wanes and legs get heavy.

This tie feels very much like the Shakhter Karagandy play-off tie two years ago.  Shakhter arrived with a solid two goal lead, but an impassioned Celtic Park pushed us over the line.  A similar intensity will be required on and off the field on Wednesday.

What’s our chances?  Not sure, but we’ve a serious challenge on our hands.

I noticed Aberdeen have cancelled their game on 12th (?) of August but we are still scheduled to play. Have we decided against a rest day this season?

I think the clever card is correct but I am in the same boat and my email said a ticket would be sent to my address. Confused but not worried.

Paul, the Celtic players will have their own issues to deal with for the crucial second leg, away from home. Here I the weather forecast r the period leading up to that game in Baku:

    http://uk.weather.com/weather/10day/Baku+AZ+Azerbaijan+AJXX0001:1:AJ

Conditions are likely to be as severe as they were on that night in Seville in May 2003, but with our players still building match fitness at the start of a new season, rather than fully fit, having played a long campaign during that epic season 12 years ago.

And if Azerbaijan is anything like Turkey, summer football is often played in the cooler hours from 10pm through midnight. Not necessarily in the professional leagues, but certainly in the amateur 5 and 7-a-sides. And I don’t know, but perhaps the pros train in the cooler hours too. So don’t assume that their players will struggle with e match timing as much as ours may struggle with the heat.

We have to get the job done at home. At least three goals for the hoops, and a clean sheet, should be enough. Anything else will leave us potentially vulnerable to a shock in Baku.

I order my home tickets online but don’t see any facility for printing the tickets at home yet it is supposed to be available. Tried contacting Celtic by email to find out why but never received a reply.

Techie help please… Looking to buy a new laptop. Had a look in Curry’s today and like the look of an HP on sale at 349 from 500. The big Lenovo touchscreen looks the part though. Not sure now.

If you bought online for Wednesday and are a ST holder, it will be activated for game. No paper tickets sent out.

Jobo, if you are on the home ticket scheme, your season ticket will be updated and can be used to get into Wednesday’s game.

I’m listening to a podcast with the best football journalist from Scotland, Graham Hunter and Davie Moyes,

Davie talks very well of his time with us and said Danny is the best player he has played with.

Three nothing would be great but if we win 1-0, I would still fancy us to go through. I think we are becoming a good away side as we have speeded up considerably.

TAL: … how ya doing? I’m heading out to Calgary this week to visit my mum, so dont think I’ll make it to the club this week. I am not in court on Wednesday, so I’m hoping Celtic TV will get the rights to the game

Glad to see you are back safe and sound from your trip…..it sounded brilliant! i was enjoying your posts about the trip. I’m looking forward to hearing more about it when I get up to the club.

    Your earlier post re HDMI

The TV will only show its resolution & try to fit in your ipad

Chances are you can change your TV aspect/ratio to try & make it better.

Always meant to ask you …….

I’ve heard you mention Annagry before – I used to drink in a bar called Iggy’s (Ignatius) after we went to mass on a Sunday. Is he still on the go?

    *******

He is indeed. Iggy’s is in the next parish to Annagry, Kincasslagh.

There was a newspaper feature recently about his son, who has returned to the area and has plans/ hopes to established a micro brewery behind the house.

Truly sorry to read that bilge under his byline. Heartbreaking, actually.

  20. My prediction for the 2 legs, is

A 1-0 win on Wednesday, and

    2-1 defeat over there.

    Interesting compilation of goals.

I noticed 1 of them is from 2013 and another looked like it was from about 10 years ago!

There were a few crackers though and they look very direct…..glimpse of goal and they go for it.

LOVED the music most of all btw :)

Going to be an interesting night on Wednesday!

  22. For a long time I have tried to give the media the benefit of the doubt.Tonight is the last time how on earth can the potential crowd on Wednesday be worthy of headlines on national news.My old man told me that the older you get the more you detest them and everything about them. At the age of 54 I can now confirm that he was absolutely spot on.

I am in some ways fortunate that at the moment I live and work in Baku. I’ve got a job in a vibrant city, there are so many don’t have a job, here and there, and there is everywhere, unfortunately.

Been to work, did my shift, came home, apartment in the old city too hot to sit down, no brainer, down the boozer for a pint and a couple of gins.

Walk home stop and play a kick around with the local kids inside the walls and the noise of the chants of “CELTIC! CELTIC!” woke a few of the long dead underneath the cobble stones. The kids are football mad hhere and they know who Celtic are.

I gave away every bit of Celtic paraphernalia I had with me to those kids; it was a fair bit but it was not enough, far, far from it, some kids didn’t get anything.

If any of you guys have anything that no longer fits you that you think you’d be happy to post over, then if you get in touch with Paul he’ll give you my e-mail address and I’ll personally see to it that a football minded kid without a dream beyond a pumped up ball, who does not have the price of a water, gets a wee bit of Celtic.

The only ones who’ll know will be you and the kid. An old scarf is a memory to the grave for that kid.

The local feeling is they are going to win, I personally disagree, but try and argue with kids.
