Euros, preseason and muscle atrophy

284

It’s all a bit cart before the horse announcing preseason fixtures without a manager or confirmed backroom team.  Plans need to be in place, though, for the Champions League qualifiers, which for Celtic, start on either 20 or 21 July against Rapid Vienna, Galatasaray or Midtjyland.

That date is a few days after the game against Preston and before the West Ham meeting.  The early graft will be done in three games on 7, 10 and 14 July at a training camp in Wales, with games against Charlton, Bristol City and TBC FC.  With a significant portion of the current squad involved in the Euros, preseason fitness should start higher than the normal baseline.

The Euros group stage ends on 23 June, a month before Champions League duty.  As we are forever saying, muscles maintain their strength for three weeks before measurable atrophy sets in, so we should be in good condition for that opening tie.  If we have a manager by then, of course!

  1. Squire Danaher is correct, It will not be Eddie Howe, I have said this consistently. It may have been him at one time but none of the excuses given make sense to me. No one at Celtic have confirmed any candidate.

The only valid reason that there has been no announcement is that the candidate is working at the Euros. I hope its Martinez and not Clarke or even worse Southgate,

Have i missed the announcement that we will be allowed in to games. Has it being established how many will get into games? We need to know this as to me its more important than the manager

I will not be paying for my ticket and those of my sons to watch a stream on the paradise pass. It is nowhere near good value.

CELTIC SEASON TICKETS AND £2.5m FANS’ GIVEAWAY

What a heap of board written garbage, dictated word for word by Peter no doubt.

    Not lazy journalism…………………………………..

  3. onenightinlisbon on

It has to be Howe. Can you imagine the uproar if Kennedy or Ross or Neil get the job now after all of this wait?

I don’t even think the Celtic board are that stupid, surely?

  4. onenightinlisbon on

Just saw the £2.5M giveaway garbage.

The board know that many will forget to use it or will decide not to bother as It’s keeping the money within the club.

£50 off the ticket would have been the correct and fair decision, but the suits don’t do correct and fair do they?

Utter contempt from them and before anyone asks I’m on automatic renewal, we’re nothing but the source of funding, like the 50 year old errant son still tapping his maw, cause he knows she’ll love him no matter what

  7. It’s far from a £2.5million giveaway. For a start it’s to go on goods, which they pay wholesale prices for, we the punters will pay the full retail cost. So they’re only losing say £25/30 on each transaction, also many many folks won’t use the voucher. Lucky if it’s going to be £1mill “giveaway” all in, not even Edouards wages for a season! por cierto.

  8. P.S. I’ll be renewing but nearer the cut off time. This is only my 2nd year of a Senior reduction, couldn’t not after all those years of paying the full whack :)) por cierto.

Not sure what the mark up on things for sale in the Celtic shop

but rememer a few years ago when Celtic had to offer replacement

tops to all fans who had bought the latest top at the time because

the front of the top became all fraid

It came out in news that the cost of them making tops in China or Indonesia

or wherever was 3 quid and they were charging fans 45 quid at the time

Will be the same now with the 50 quid voucher only costing the club maybe

    a fiver per voucher

  18. For a while, last season, we were 19 points behind and had 3 games in hand.

Many posters on here referred to a 10 point deficit when posting then.

Trying hard not to appear annoying, I often corrected this.

We all know we finished the season 25 points behind.

It appears the denial is still in the air, this time over the appointment of our new management team.

When did we become so delusional?

  19. You don’t want a season ticket,fair enough,don’t buy one.

  20. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Hhmm.

IMHO, we missed a trick back in the days we had high confidence of reaching the Champions League group stages.

How to counter the ridiculously early preseason?

Particularly off the back of a Euro Championship or world cup finals?

Play your best 11 through them

Give them 2 weeks off in early September

(Qualifiers end 25 August, groups start 14 September).

Play first 11 flat out in CL, but sparingly in the League and League Cup across September to early December.

Maybe (just maybe) it would mitigate not only the end of season burnout but also that awful December flatness that crept in since BR became manager.

  21. onenightinlisbon on

Renew or don’t renew, totally a personal choice although some can see when they are being played by a board who cares not one bit for the support.

It appears the denial is still in the air, this time over the appointment of our new management team.

When did we become so delusional?

    ————–

Agree with you – the two above extracts ‘hit the nail on the head’.

After a season when we were beaten decisively & early in all competitions, a deal of realism is surely what’s required

We can’t snap our fingers and bring in a top-class manager – it takes time and mutual agreement. The same can be said for the sale and purchase of players. The rebuild will not happen overnight. The playing style and success of the team will not happen overnight. The return to ‘normal’ match-day revenue will not happen overnight.

When pointing these things out some would label the messenger as less of a Celtic man than they are – some would say that the messenger is being unduly pessimistic. Of course some said at the start of the season that 10iar was ‘in the bag’, that Shane Duffy was the final piece in the jigsaw and that not one of the Ibrox squad would get into our first team.

‘Whistling in the dark’ is delusional – things are darker at the moment than we ever could have imagined a mere nine months ago. The saying goes “it’s darkest before dawn” – let’s hope our new dawn is everything we want it to be – but let’s also be realistic.

Finally, if you can afford a season ticket, you should renew, or, buy one – this season that’s what supporting Celtic requires.

  23. JHB

Many thanks for the response and I completely agree.

In the interests of full disclosure –

I thought we would win the league, albeit a close one

I believed Shane Duffy would be a good signing

I can no longer make it to Glasgow so have long since given up my season ticket.

    ———

I would like to think I can respectfully disagree with you and I’ll tell you why.

I think there’s a semantic debate to be had regarding the meaning of “supporting” in you conclusion.

I get what I think you mean. The stuff about ‘the club needs us’, ‘over and over’, ‘when they need us’ etc.

I agree with that to an extent. However I also think there’s a debate about the heart and soul of the club in terms of what we aspire to as supporters and what our Board aspire to and what they are capable of delivering.

In a nutshell I believe – and have increasingly come to the conclusion over several years – that they take the view our horizons are no more than finishing a point ahead of That Shower, and facilitating their emergence with their financial power base.

I want to support my dreams for Celtic. I want nothing to do with our backdoor 5WA Old

Firm-ery crap and our hypocrisy of public statements insisting “we’re half of nothing” and ‘Glasgow Derby’ and the like.

I am not prepared to support this business model. I have walked to Celtic Park in the rain and snow with leaky shoes the Saturday before Christmas 1989 for a game v Dundee. I’ve done my faithful through and through bit.

I thank God I am now a middle aged man without significant financial concerns and could pay cash today for my seat in 405.

But I’m through with it for the time being.

Anyone disagrees, on ye go if finishing a point ahead of That Shower is the height of your aspirations.

“Celtic’s Season Ticket holders during the past year have shown tremendous commitment to the Club, standing by us during a pandemic which has changed all our lives, supporting the Club at a time we needed you most – this is something we will always remember and will always be hugely appreciative of. ”

his revelations are interesting, particularly when he says I am not clever and look what job I got given.

  29. Peter Lawwell is an experienced operator and Dermot Desmond is also an experienced deal maker.

It doesn’t make sense that we haven’t appointed a manager or a DOF or a Chief scout etc. The only scenario I can make out is that no one wants the job on the terms we have offered. We want a big name manager but we don’t seem to have landed one.

If our choice was Howe what possible reason would we not announce him. It doesn’t add up.

it must be someone working at the Euros. I would think it would be an English speaker,. Martinez fits the bill with our without Maloney. His team are one of the favourites for the Championship so with insist that any announcement to be delayed until their exit. He played for Motherwell and his wife is Scottish.

Clarke is also a candidate but not as exciting

Luis Enrique of Spain lived in Australia and will speak English. Fernando Santos of Portugal also speaks English. Roberto Mancini speaks good English. Joachim Löw speaks English and has announced he is leaving Germany. His wiki reports that he was an altar boy.
