Euros, preseason and muscle atrophy

284

It’s all a bit cart before the horse announcing preseason fixtures without a manager or confirmed backroom team.  Plans need to be in place, though, for the Champions League qualifiers, which for Celtic, start on either 20 or 21 July against Rapid Vienna, Galatasaray or Midtjyland.

That date is a few days after the game against Preston and before the West Ham meeting.  The early graft will be done in three games on 7, 10 and 14 July at a training camp in Wales, with games against Charlton, Bristol City and TBC FC.  With a significant portion of the current squad involved in the Euros, preseason fitness should start higher than the normal baseline.

The Euros group stage ends on 23 June, a month before Champions League duty.  As we are forever saying, muscles maintain their strength for three weeks before measurable atrophy sets in, so we should be in good condition for that opening tie.  If we have a manager by then, of course!

Wouldn’t surprise me if this wee man believes his career choice was a loss to the philosophy sector.

Infamously disparaged the faithful in Parliament to further his media career.

    Beyond contempt.

Give me a rabid, in-yer-face, bigoted, Orangeman over a forelock tugging Uncle Tim any day of the week.

  2. I read some of the Pat Nevin stuff at the weekend.

Between him and John Boyle, and Pats under qualification (a BA in Commerce ffs) to actually run the business I really wonder how it failed.

  3. Very odd to call full price ( again ) for a season ticket that didn’t get you into the game last season, and may not get everybody in this season. Off on the wrong foot?, Dominic McKay with no manager in place, pressing on with renewals that Celtic know are at risk of low take up, was either a last dodgy decision, or the first dodgy decision of this year.

Then again maybe the financial heads are as disconnected from the board as the supporters presently are, and more proof, that pandemic or not, without the supporters Celtic are nothing.

We’re gonna need a bigger waiting list CSC

  4. Personal life

Nevin grew up supporting Celtic.[7] He switched his support to Hibernian after feeling that his boyhood club had become a large corporate organisation and the Celtic Park stadium no longer felt like home.[17] Another reason was Celtic fans chanting IRA songs.[18] He also supports his former club Chelsea, and writes a weekly column for the Chelsea website.[19] Nevin lives in Duns, Scottish Borders, a small town in the Scottish Borders with his wife and two children.[20] His daughter, also a keen sports player, was a Scottish champion in badminton.[20][21] He received an honorary degree from Abertay University in 2012.[22] Nevin is the cousin of the retired English footballer Terry Butcher.[23]

  7. onenightinlisbon on

I honestly think Howe is the next manager.

You would have thought though that they would have waited until he was in place before asking for season ticket money.

    —-

i dont understand why they have waited so long to open up the renewals

why wait until a manager is in place?

half the season ticket holders would have renewed anyway

then when a new manager is announced and there is (hopefully) a rush for renewals, they would have already processed half of them so wouldnt be snowed under with renewals all at once

so what reason was there for delaying?

i can only think that they might have moved the price up or down depending on who they got

apart from that i cant quite work out the reasoning

Wasn’t being entirely serious with that post.

But I do remember the faux reaction to some songs being sung at Hampden, in the company of Rob McLean I think, songs which apparently he could not hear. Now a Hibs and Chelsea supporter.

BBC seem to like him though, even had him as co-commentator at the Women’s Champions League Final where he confidently picked the expensively purchased blues to win. Only to see them lose badly to Barca

No doubt will be back on Radio 5 on Saturday, for the mens final regaling us with tales of his wonderful days at Stamford Bridge. Couldn’t hear the songs and chants there either.

Random thought, I really rated Morten W ieghorst- thought he was a classy player, great technique. Did anyone else or is this false memory?

Agreed. An all-round footballer. He made an amazing come-back after falling victim to Guillaume Barre syndrome – an illness which may cripple for life. Well played, Greenock.

You have your own view and you provide reasons for holding that view – I respect that.

My point was in generality that we need the same numbers (53k) in season-ticket sales this coming season, probably more than any other recent season.

I don’t attach the same weight to historical issues as you, although again I respect the fact that you and others feel very strongly about certain things.

The world is not fair, however I believe all that befell the Rangers name over ten years was, all things taken together, deserved punishment for their actions. The original club died – suicide by debt – the media chooses to look the other way – I am not going to waste my time in trying to persuade them otherwise.

The future is what matters – things are more difficult for than we could ever have imagined – we all need to pull together.

I agree with much of what you say here regarding the need for ST take up to remain at current levels and that we need to “pull together” as you say.

I think though that the issue is how much each individual supporter is prepared to tolerate in terms of the growing perception that we have helped facilitate the resurrection of a Hun entity of sorts.

Where I do disagree with you is that while their punishment is deserved, I don’t think That Shower have been punished anywhere NEAR enough.

Ultimately I feel people are entitled to see Celtic’s current – and legitimate – sales pitch that we all “pull together” as frankly a bit rich, in light of the notion that we have reaped what we’ve sown here

If we lie with Hun dogs, we end up with fleas.

People know they should renew but I can assure you that anger among my company and others is genuine, among 8 people who have between them literally hundreds of years of years of holding a ST.

Watching the game on my tablet with sound off, last 15 mins wife away to answer the phone. So put sound on, you would think Villarreal had to stand 100’s of shots.

Match stats 5 shots 1 on target Villarreal, against 3 shots 1 but don’t let stats get in the way

  23. Not sure if I’ve got this right, but here we go.

If Man Utd win this Monaco get the automatic qualification to CL group stage as Man Utd have already qualified via the league. This would free up another space in the non-champions qualifying path (our path) and push everyone up a spot. Celtic are currently the highest coef. team in qualifying rnd 2, so this could result in us skipping rnd 2 and entering qualifying at rnd 3.

    Come on you red devils!
