EVAN FERGUSON put his boyhood favourites to the sword as he fired in a devastating double as AS Roma romped to a 3-0 Europa League win over Celtic at Parkhead last night.
The Republic of Ireland striker, on loan at the Serie A cracks from Brighton, pounced twice in 10 first-half minutes after his international team-mate Liam Scales had put through his own goal in the sixth minute with a rocket-like header following a right-wing corner-kick.
Wilfried Nancy watched in disappointment and frustration from the dug-out as he suffered a second consecutive defeat at the beginning of his Hoops career after a 2-1 debut loss to Hearts at the same venue on Sunday.
Ferguson, who was linked with the champions in the summer before he headed for Italy, admitted the visitors took advantage of the managerial change and the team’s switch in playing set-up.
The frontman said: “We knew they were in the transition with the managers, they changed the formation.
“You could see, at times, they played well and it worked and, at times, they didn’t, some people didn’t know what they were doing.
“I think we just stuck to our gameplan and tried to play the way we play.”
However, Ferguson does not believe it is all doom and gloom for the Parkhead men.
The lively hitman, speaking to TNT Sports, added: “It’s difficult when a new manager comes in and you need the players to buy into what he’s doing.
“I think they will and they will be fine.”
Celtic fans will be hoping the words are prophetic with the holders defending their Premier Sports League Cup in the silverware showpiece against St Mirren at Hampden on Sunday.
