    From a beautiful sunny Brisbane harbour, 30 degs expected

     

    so loads of beer to consume, need to keep hydrated you understand 🍺

     

    A visit to the city centre Celtic pubs which I’m assured from a local

     

    friend will be full of our bhoys taking a Monday Club holiday.

    I don’t know if the clubs main criteria was to gather new fans in Oz ?

     

    my take on it was to recognise we had thousands of fans already there and appreciate that fact.

    Sorry for the dose of reality.

     

     

    One of the criteria for going abroad is to expand our global brand. Our brand is generally made up of folks who have historical/cultural/ethnic links with the club. Unlike Barca, Real and some of the EPL teams it is not based on performance. I think there’s an aim to expand it to include folk not in the former category but on the attraction of a successful team. Ange proudly takes his team back to Oz to show them off and they get gubbed by Sydney and didn’t exactly set the forest alight against Everton, a team close to the bottom of the EPL and in a bit of a crisis, with too much inept defending and shocking penalties. All this after a very poor CL. I remember when we were trying to expand the Japanese market and went to Japan when Nakamura played for us and got gubbed 3-0 by Yokohama Marinos. I believe Nakamura said he was embarrassed by the performance. I think Ange must have been equally embarrassed by what went on in Oz – of course he won’t say so in public, he’ll talk about the joy brought to local fans of Celtic but I doubt there’s any illusion about expanding that market. We are an SPL team who do poorly out of the SPL – what’s in it for those who want a global team based on performances? We need to do better and that requires investment.

    I guess the “tour” was great for Celtic fans happy to shout and sing in a festive atmosphere of a friendly down under but I doubt Celtic’s performances won many new fans in Australia given the performances. That is a pity and I guess at least one of the club’s aims in going there was not achieved. At least it must be clear now we must bring in a top class striker with some urgency to immediately be first choice. I’m not sure looking at the German boy playing in Bundesliga 2 and scoring 9 in 19 is the boy we need.
