Every game’s important for a squad looking to repair reputation

326

An away trip to St Johnstone on the back of an away trip to Fenerbahce was a challenging one on paper. Teams drop more points away from home after an away European game than under any other circumstances, but yesterday went as well as we could have hoped for.

Nadir Ciftci has failed to set imaginations alight since arriving in the summer but the support were delighted for the player and his prospects, after two excellently taken goals. The first, controlling a corner on his thigh before turning and thrashing the ball into the corner of the net, was top drawer. More please.

Our other summer signing who has recently pulled some form together is Dedryck Boyata. Dedryck was the proverbial bag of nerves earlier this season. He looked clumsy with the ball at his feet, was wasteful when passing and was part of a defence which could not defend corner kicks. The arrival of Jozo Simunovic in the team coincided with Dedryck looking more like a Celtic player.

Without European football the second half of the season has an anti-climactic feel to it but it’s important for both these players. They, like many others in the squad, have a lot to prove after some indifferent performances. Not all will make it. Several, who are teetering on the brink of the first team, will find their opportunities limited, so there is no such thing as an unimportant game. Every game is important when you are trying to improve your reputation, every corner is important as is every chance.

Yup. Ronnie is here for the long haul. If the footballing collapse on the field now continues within Scotland now that our European reputation is garbage then I surmise that PL will judiciously jettison RD to prolong his heated driveway fund. It is possible that DD may intervene if he believes the EPL or another possible OF theatre coalesces to facilitate the moustached irish hero’s image, however, those are leprechaun tales. The best bet we can hope for as Celtic supporters is to bide and wait our time and hope that the green huns die along with their counterparts and some other ambition driven funded football club with custodians with a vision take over.

Too many glory hunters following teams who are no longer a part or a reflection of the communities they grew up in.

Too many personalities thinking they are bigger than the game.

Too much money sloshing around and unaccounted for.

Too many opportunists worming their way into positions of power and spending their time not for the good of the game but to solidify their power and line their pockets.

  8. I disagree that the 2nd half of the season has an anti climactic feel.

We have no distractions and can focus on the treble.

We have the chance to assess younger players like Allan, McGregor, Nesbitt and hopefully Henderson and Christie.

We have the time for the defence to gel as they get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

If we buy judiciously in the winter window, we may even get the chance to bring in an experienced player who can help steady the youngsters and bring them forward.

We can rotate our main men to preserve their fitness and desire.

This is an ideal situation to prepare for the CL qualifiers.

I’m sure we will grasp it.

Saw your post from last night suggesting playing Ciftci in Rogics spot.

Geezo……the man has one of his best games for us and you drop him!

Personally i thought he worked quite well with Ciftci and showed the green shoots of a good understanding.

On some occasions its not the new guy thats the problem…..sometimes its the ones they are trying to fit in with.

Thats not a criticism of any other player btw, its just that perhaps Commons or A N Other may be doing things their way as they have always done and they are on a totally different wavelength.

Sometimes the best players dont make the best team though and i think getting players that work well together in partnerships all over the pitch goes a long way to forming a good side.

It would be good to see the 2 of them kicking on from here to see what they both can add.

Interesting little aside about Dedryck’s defending at corner kicks early in his career with us.

I’m totally convinced by the stats provided by one of our own who frequently states that we barely lose a goal from such a circumstance.

    No,nay,never,he reckons,or near enough.

Thanks, mate. I couldn’t remember what you had updated your moniker to!

As I said in my post to Paul67,our perceptions seem to belie the stats. It might be ‘hide-behind-the-sofa’ time whenever we have to defend a corner, but defend it we generally do. Somehow.

IMO,most of our goals are lost due to giving up possession about midway in the opposition half. Cut that out,we might get somewhere.

  17. My friends in Celtic,

I also would stick with Shift Key. I would accommodate him even if we had to change our system. It’s Murderwell not Barca we are playing at home. I have watched him prior to joining us and he can be a real handful to opposing defenders. I still think there may be a player in there somewhere.

I like Griff, he has listened and learned, however I think he is now playing to his maximum ability. Shift Key may possibly still do a job for us on a European stage. He still has potential, I think the Griff has realised his.

Only my opinion and I really hope both can prove me wrong————-again.

    Hail, Hail.

  18. Morning all.

Dark and dank down here at the moment.

    GG,

I had the same thought about the second half of the season letting our young players gell. My hope would be that we acquire an experienced hand, who can protect them from the more agricultural opponents (a wee Bertie) and let them develop the confidence they showed late in the game against St Johnstone. We have some gifted players and a manager whose forte seems to be in bringing on young talent. Let’s hope he succeeds.

  19. GG,

Respectfully I think you are incorrect. Certain English teams have grown away from the fans ,eg the prawn Sandwich brigade at Old Trafford .

However this seems to be more prevalent with the bigger more powerful clubs. Clubs like Leicester, Crystal Palace and Stoke provide a great atmosphere. Like last night.

Entitlement seems to be the crux of the matter, and it’s not only in England that it is so obvious.

    HH.

  20. Folk saying that the Celtic shouldny be playing in a 4-4-2 set-up ?

Well, to divert from the 4-4-2 is in a way saying to the opposition that we’re worried about you!

How many teams did Mr Stein’s teams worry about ?

Ok, I know that we dont have the players that Mr Stein had but, what we do have is a manager.

It’s all about the manager preparing the players physically / mentally / tactically.

A Celtic team should take to the pitch, ready to let it be known that….this is the we that we’re going to play….what ya gonna do about it ?

That’s not hunlike arrogance…it’s more like…we’re the Sellic…bring it on!

I think personally that, every Celtic team should play with two strikers…home and away.

The key is…how to deploy the two strikers.

My favorite 4-4-2 form Celtic was, more like a 4-4-1-1 on beachball Sunday, MO’N put out a Celtic team,….now, this is crucial….with a set-up of having two buses parked in the shape of two banks of 4-4 with a, ‘flat’ back 4 to stop other teams with, three front players. A solid back 4, a solid / fluent middle 4, and….crucially…a front 2 playing in a 1-1 set-up…dovetailing / swapping positions…holding up play to allow the schemers to break from the middle 4 to assist the front 2….easy, eh.

Or, the Wim 4-4-2….a back 4 ‘diamond’ with, two full backs attacking or, sitting and a CH with a back sweeper aka…Stubbs(Back-Sweeper)…Rieper(CH)….a ‘diamond’ middle 4…Lambert(defensive / Front sweeper)…Burley(attacking midfielder)…Morten W.(left midfield)….Jackie MacNamara(right mifield)…up front, Sid and the KOK’s….sometimes Brattback or, Darren Jacko who,….imho…had he sadly not gotten ill…would have had the stuff to go on and become a hero of the Celtic fans…who’ll remember how much of a pain in the ass he was as a, Dundee Utd and Hibs player agaist us….always a pest but, a pest that I’d rather was wearing the hoops. Wim was a fox who took no prisoners, that included no puppet strings from above either which….imho…made him be seen as a threat in Fergus and Jock Brown’s eyes. Why can’t these interfering basturts from the board room not just roll with it…if ye let the manager do his job…he’ll fill the stadium for ye…why can’t these jobsworth basturts no just roll with it….detect the mood of the customers…if they’re disgruntled…have a word in the managers ear…a simple WTF’s going on should suffice…non of this Fergus…”…it’s my bat n ball.”…stuff…get everybody on the same page…everybody at the club should be charged with the same objectives…get a team on the pitch that makes the Celtic fans gel the club…that should be the norm at Celtic Park. Nobody is looking for some sort of, Celtic utopia…that’s for dreamers….show the outside world that, the club will pull out every stop to put a team on the pitch that gets it right up the hun establishment(that ok Tony ?:)…look at the get it right up the hun establishment that Mr Stein’s delivered….he had them rioting all over Europe, invading the pitch against us coz the animals couldny stand the sight of an ecstatic Celtic end…sticking it right up them…Tony Donnelly 67 style:)

Btw, I will love the blessed Martin O’Neill until my last breath but….MO’N…I still think that, you should have gave Porto the, Beachball Sunday tactics and…you would now be immortal.

….Ronny…keep bid Nadir Ciftci in the team and, make sure that he continues to get chances…like Sunday…give him the chances and, he’ll put them away for ye….no offence Ronny but…’every’ Celtic team should play the Beachball Sunday Way or….The Wim Way…imho.

    ….be good……

  23. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    Kev,

the problem with playing 4-4-2 while everybody else is playing 4-2-3-1 is that you don’t actually get much possession of the ball. Doesn’t matter how good you are – without the ball you’re toast.

  24. More nonsense about only playing “One up front”.I have no idea what games you are watching, but most of our domestic games we have around 4 or 5 playing up front, sometimes more.Utter nonsense being spoken about this.On Sunday, for example,we had Lustig in the winger position,Rogic,Ciftci,Forrest,Armstrong, all in or around the box.Every week its the same.In most games we only have the two CHs in our own half.
