Every ounce of energy and backing required

257

Thoughts of strikers we might have in the future should be nowhere near minds as we prepare to take on Dundee United at Celtic Park tomorrow.  If it’s Johnny Kenny up front, back him.  Same goes for Shin, Daizen or even Benjamin Nygren (don’t mock me, he knows where the goal is better than anyone in the squad).

The return of Martin has expectations sailing higher than they have been since his departure last month (it feels longer, right?), but there are reasons to be cautious.  United bossed the same Celtic squad three weeks ago and have already taken a draw at Tynecastle and Ibrox this season. Anything less than 100% from the champions and they will do so again.

This game is reminiscent of that pivotal match against United four years ago this month.  With the score at 0-0 and Celtic down to 10 men, Liel Abada scored a 90th minute winner to give us the chance to go top of the table next time out.  That Celtic team is one we all remember fondly.  They built the platform for the subsequent trophy haul, but even they needed to squeeze every ounce of energy and backing to get the result.

The same tomorrow, please.

  1. I see Liverpool are ready to step in and “steal” another Celtic academy project….

No doubt the usual derisory compensation fee will be paid…

Gone are the days when public parks were scoured by English scouts at weekends looking for the next “big thing”…

Instead they let the local clubs pick them up, nurture, train and educate before stepping in and stealing them away with promises of 10 x the salary and property kicked in to boot….

This is where UEFA should be stepping in…

If we’re talking FSR or FFP or whatever….average turnover based over say 10 years should be taken into account comparative too both clubs involved…

Over the past few years compensation fees have averaged between £500k to £800k from what I’ve seen…

I think to be fair…..clubs with an average turnover of £150m who are “stealing” from a club with a turnover of £10m….should have too pay 15 x the usual compensation fee….

So…if the compensation fee between clubs with the same turnover was agreed at £500k…then between clubs with a 15 x difference the compensation should be 15 x the normal and would be would be £7.5m…

That example is taking it to an extreme…but you get my drift…

The help this would bring to smaller clubs would be astronomical…but…although that particular scenario is unlikely…it would be a great starting point to allow smaller clubs to negotiate a fee more suitable to them….either much more money or retain the players that the team has put a lot of time and effort into…

    Just a thought…

  2. We are crying out for 2 strikers have been for several windows yet we blow and we have blown 10m on Tounekti and Balikwisha plus wages for 5 years ,I cannot believe we want another winger unless Yang is offski, how much would they be sold for right now to anyone interested? A dreadful waste of money which is symbolic of Celtic’s buys and will continue until we scout properly.

  3. No fans groups allowed wrongly banned by the club still the Green Brigade wither you like them are not are needed and are badly missed last week’s derby we had the bile and noise from them allowed in truly unreal and unforgivable.

  4. BBC commentator recognises that the team playing is Macclesfield and not Macclesfield town who ceased to exist a few years ago.

So they can get it right – waiting on the BBC carrying on this enlightenment.

  5. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Imagine a plausible scenario playing out at the moment.

MO’N walks into the Boardroom and say “guys, you have over £80m in the bank. Give me net £20m in this window and I’ll win you this league. You can recover the £20m in time. Alternatively, you can prioritise the cash position and the huns will win the league and dominate the next generation. Even in that scenario I know that you can size the club to turn a profit. So what’s it to be, are we going to prioritise running Celtic as a business purely for profit or are we going to balance business with football ambition”?

What choice do Mikey and the no-marks make?

  6. I’d guess players agents work 24/7…7 days a week during transfer windows…..

Does anyone think that anyone at Celtic are talking to potential players/agents over the weekend…or will they be waiting to down their first coffee on Monday and start working on it after 9.15am?….

  7. I’m sick of flicking on to newsnow Celtic looking for positive news only too find shit…

Since January 1st I think I’ve hit that site at least a thousand times….

  8. Who says we haven’t replaced Idah? We have a young Irish striker who can’t hit the target. What more do you want?

  9. You’ve got to love newsnow headlines

“Martin O’Neill gets his wish and signs Brazilian World Cup winning play maker”

    Click on the story…

“It seems like yesterday but it’s 20 years ago this week that Martin O’Neill signed Juninho for Celtic “ blah blah blah…

Any good ones with potential to make it get to first professional contract stage and then jump ship to an EPL team.

  11. Are Kelly or Cummings anywhere near playing first team football? West Ham and Millwall they moved to, they will be back up here in their early to mid 20s

  12. Doak was a freak transfer nowhere near a jersey at Liverpool but got a 25m move to Bournemouth.

  13. I’ve noticed since MON back the DR and BBC headlines on Newsnow have become progressively more negative about Celtic. In part I assume they are energised by the huns winning a few games. But it’s also a sign that they are worried. Good stuff. Keep writing us off lads. There are a lot of players in our squad deeply frustrated by the past few weeks who will be desperate to show how good we really are. Let’s hope it starts today. (And I really hope Johnny bags a couple.)

  14. Not sure about Cummings but DK always about Millwall squad and was playing from start prior to picking up a recent injury.

  15. RE. young players moving to EPL. I know for a fact Cummings was messaging his ex teammates in the youths showing his first payment in his bank – Over £500K.

No matter what you think that is a draw for young players. Also, we don’t have a track record of giving players game time as we are too busy to keep winning trophies.

I think there is room for having a young player on the bench at most games and giving them some minutes.

  16. Yes he will be rich lets see what he achieves in football, doing that to young kids is not really moral I think, of course they’re all going to want that when they see it.
