Evidence is clear: Celtic are back

272

The evidence is clear: we’ve got our Celtic back.  The football on Saturday was better than at any point this season.  Four goals scored told only part of the story.  Odsonne Edouard alone hit the post three times, while Callum McGregor struck the crossbar and Scott Sinclair hit the post with the keeper out of his goal.

Faculties that were so elusive a few weeks ago, like passing and movement, were a joy.  Tom Rogic deserved his Man of the Match award, while Odsonne is back looking ominously difficult to play.  The loss of Scott Brown to injury was a worry, while his replacement, Scott Sinclair continues to struggle to recapture past form.  If you were within a mile of Celtic Park, you may also have heard me when Mikael Lustig was out-muscled for Hibs second goal.

Hibs looked a shadow of the team we expected in the first half.  Anyone who comes to Celtic Park with more lofty intentions than simply defending their 18-yard box had better be on form.  They objectively improved in the second half, but that would have been different if the woodwork did not come to their rescue so often.

I’m not going to tell you I’m confident about Leipzig, but I am looking forward to Murrayfield on Sunday.  We look ready to defend our treble.

Financial success and sound financial management are Peter`s principle and prime responsibilities.

He`s a raging success in his field. Oversees the deals . Buys low , sells high .

Makes a PROFIT. Dirty word for some .

    I sincerely hope he`s on a percentage.

    He deserves it.

GFTB, not complaining, just trying to understand. To me it reads like he is heavily incentivised to reach CL, this seems in contradiction to the popular narrative of heated driveways sabotaging CL success. As I said just trying to understand, no doubt we have an accountant or two in our midst who can explain.

That is indeed the case from 2016, but was not necessary the case prior to the change of remuneration package.

    BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 7:57 PM,

Thank you for the replies, you make some very good points, however whether Brendan’s summer plan was the right one or not, whether by backing him to reward existing talent and endeavour with improved contracts removes our ability to pay large transfer fees or not is of course salient issues. And a lot longer post is needed eke out these points.

My current point would be simply this…

    – Brendan’s plan for summer transfers (whether good or bad, practical or not) was not backed.

This led to a complete disconnect in our transfer objectives and this led to a incoherent squad building process.

    Result…

Our squad is weaker than it has been in three seasons

We failed to qualify for the UCL

We started the season and therefore our EUL campaign poorly.

At the end of last Season we had £100M turnover and a Squad worth £100M. The transfer window failure means our turnover has decreased and the value of our squad has decreased.

I’m glad that Brendan is being magnanimous, for me it means he still sees his future with Celtic. It means we can hopefully start putting things right in January.

It’s great to see the team play so well now and it’s come at the right time, in a week we’ll know if we have a real Euro campaign in us and a shot at a treble, treble.

    Hail Hail

  4. If anyone is interested in a decent level of scouting, I carried out some of my own at the weekend, free of charge.

    Lee Congerton watch out

If we crave a replacement for Dembele in January, we seriously need to take a look at :

    Luka Jovic at Eintracht Frankfurt

    21 yr old Bosnian International.

Serious talent. Guy is on fire

The divisive element which the serial complainers create .

    Simply a downer .

Any perceived or real negative element in the life of Celtic is sheeted back to the Board.

Whether it is beyond the ability of the Board to remedy said issue or not .

  9. If anyone honestly believes that Peter Lawwell could not be replaced by an equally good CEO they are badly mistaken. That is the kind of talk board members put about to justify their overinflated salaries. The gap between average wages in firms and directors salaries since the Thatcher era is off the scale.

The managing directors of Scottish Banks a few generations ago would be astonished at the money their descendants were drawing nowadays.

Who decides the salaries and bonuses? Other directors.

Who are they answerable to? Major shareholders. Who are they? Folk like Dermott Desmond. Or big corporate shareholders. They are all in it together. Most directors are on several corporate boards. They are incestuous.

PL could be replaced tomorrow for half the price.

“Financial success and sound financial management are Peter`s principle and prime responsibilities.”

And if he stuck to that then all well and good but the evidence is that he doesn’t. So sorry I don’t think he is worth his salary/bonus but if he and the board decide to do the right thing and finally back the Res. 12’ers then I will gladly reconsider my position, albeit that “doing the right thing” should be the default position and not something worthy of reward. Imho it’s nothing to do with profit and all to do with value for money and ethics. You can’t just take the good parts of the job and bask in the successes whilst ignoring the difficult challenges because of the people it will upset or what it may reveal. It’s time for PL and the board to step up, earn their corn and show that they are in our corner. “A club like no other” – we’ll soon find out….

    Hail Hail

  15. I will not mention his name, but I know a guy who was head hunted for a very senior job at Celtic about 15 years ago, who was managing director of a huge American firm in their European HQ in Brussels. Anyone who knows me will know who I am talking about.

    And that’s just me.

There is always a new generation coming up behind the present incumbents.

Peter Lawwell will not be there forever. He can and will be replaced. Regardless of how good he is doing, he is not worth 2.5m per year. It is disgusting.

You overestimate how good he is. It’s not like he is in charge of Tesco, up against Morrisons, Sainsbury, Aldi Lidl etc

Are Celtic fans going to beggar off to another team? Even during the Ronnie seasons we were still drawing in more than double any other team in Scotland. He gets it easy.

  17. Brendan speaking after the Hibs game…

Of the lack of transfer activity, Rodgers was clear in his disapproval, saying: “In the summer we wanted to go into another gear and we didn’t. We stood still. And slowly from then, we’ve started to move and we’ve moved forward and forward each week.”

Going by Brendan’s own words does really believe he is-

    A) Content with our transfer dealings this summer .

    B) Satisfied the board gave him appropriate support in his quest to strengthen the team this summer.

The transfer window of inactivity appears to still rankle him but I think he will stick it out with us, I certainly hope so. Arguably our best manager since Stein.

Q/ Please correct me if I`m wrong , but my understanding is that Peter does what the Board tells him to do .

A/ No idea but he’s the CEO and seems to think he knows a player’s value more than some of our managers.

Q/ If his remuneration is stratospheric , as you suggest , then perhaps the Board feel that he is carrying out his remit to a T and achieving the results he has been mandated.

A/ I didn’t suggest his remuneration was stratospheric merely that imo he’s not worth his salary/bonus.

Q/ How much did Moussa earn per annum ?

A/ No idea but his contract would have been negotiated and awarded by PL

Q/ Less or more than Peter ?

    A/ See above

Q/ Why no whinge about players earnings ?

A/ Because PL agrees their contracts

Nowhere in the first quote does it say or suggest “disapproval”.

Disappointment, yes. We were all disappointed.

    As for (B).

Perhaps the Board gave him all the support they were able to, in line with the budget. Brendan acknowledged the problem of players refusing to leave and the effect that had on recruitment.

However, that fact doesn’t suit your and other’s narrative.

The interesting part of his quote for me is this, “And slowly from then, we’ve started to move and we’ve moved forward and forward each week.”

Does that not suggest that the players were at the club, but for one reason or another, it was not happening for them at the start of the season.

If I was to speculate, I would say that the Boyata and Dembélé situations had an effect on team morale….and I don’t think that could be placed solely at the Boardroom door.

It appears to be difficult for some to keep their Us and Them agenda out of their reasoning.
