Evidence is clear: Celtic are back

272

The evidence is clear: we’ve got our Celtic back.  The football on Saturday was better than at any point this season.  Four goals scored told only part of the story.  Odsonne Edouard alone hit the post three times, while Callum McGregor struck the crossbar and Scott Sinclair hit the post with the keeper out of his goal.

Faculties that were so elusive a few weeks ago, like passing and movement, were a joy.  Tom Rogic deserved his Man of the Match award, while Odsonne is back looking ominously difficult to play.  The loss of Scott Brown to injury was a worry, while his replacement, Scott Sinclair continues to struggle to recapture past form.  If you were within a mile of Celtic Park, you may also have heard me when Mikael Lustig was out-muscled for Hibs second goal.

Hibs looked a shadow of the team we expected in the first half.  Anyone who comes to Celtic Park with more lofty intentions than simply defending their 18-yard box had better be on form.  They objectively improved in the second half, but that would have been different if the woodwork did not come to their rescue so often.

I’m not going to tell you I’m confident about Leipzig, but I am looking forward to Murrayfield on Sunday.  We look ready to defend our treble.

  1. The Green Brigade display banners in memory of, the passing of Michelle McFarlane, a Glasgow champion of the plight of the homeless, much in keeping with the traditions of Bro Walfrid and the Celtic Football and Athletic Company that he helped to form, to serve starving Irish immigrants in the east end of Glasgow in 1888.

Fast forward 130 odd years, and you get supporters of the newly formed, Celtic Football Club since 1994, sitting on a supporters website, discussing how many £millions that, the CEO should be annually entitled to, for winning the one horse Scottish pub league, better known as, the SPFL.

    Deary me.

Below, is the link to the story of Michelle’s passing. If the link doesn’t work, then the story is on, news now Celtic website.

I did not see the banner on the weekend. Thanks for posting that.

  3. Hi Mike, just picked my tablet up – was waiting on the NFL game coming on but got sidetracked watching Dortmund (Rogers 569) – They’re some team this season.

Aye, got an Email from Almore this morning. I’m always up for a couple o’ pints, so a hoot sounds good. Club?

  4. Kev,

Brother Walfrid may have worked for nothing. Dedicated his life. But very soon afterwards Celtic had to BUY land. Build a ground. There was always a business element to it. You are naïve in the extreme if you think a club like Celtic could be run and exist with charitable volunteers.

It is admirable what Michelle did. There are many people around Celtic who do likewise. This site has raised God knows how much money for charity.

I have said in response to you previously, during your idealistic jungle years the board were no better than boards since.

If you read what I said today you will see that I hate the money directors are paid at Celtic and elsewhere.

You are quick to mock supporters for spending £49. When was the last time you were at the ground and saw the same folk donating tons of food for food banks. Or thousands of pounds getting raised in collections. Have you heard of Mary’s Meals or anything to do with kitchens? Thai Tims?

We all hate the actions and inactions of the board and how much they pay themselves. But leave off the fans for goodness sake.

Are you so inward looking that you can’t understand that Celtic is a huge part of many people’s lives? Would you deny them that?

Don’t be so selfish in your thinking and compassion. Many of the £49ers are generous and caring people.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that channel. Dortmund have been one of the most enjoyable teams to watch for a few years now.

For some reason, I am now getting Bein Tv (channel 491) … Barca- Sevilla has just started

    In reply…

Of the lack of transfer activity, Rodgers was clear in his disapproval, saying: “In the summer we wanted to go into another gear and we didn’t. We stood still. And slowly from then, we’ve started to move and we’ve moved forward and forward each week.”

There are two different we’s Brendan is referencing here the first one is himself and his staff, the second we is the board imo. If that’s not dissaproval then I don’t know what is.

It’s telling that after all the weeks and months have passed that Brendan saw fit to mention it . He doesn’t speak off the cuff and always chooses his words carefully which tells me he must feel quite strong about it.

I agree about your views on the Boyata and Dembele situations, both had a corrosive effect on the teams morale. I also agree that players not willing to leave may have had an effect on some transfers in.

My main point is Brendan wasn’t supported properly by the board in the summer. He has stated publicly the need to replace outgoing players with similar quality- it didn’t happen and he clearly feels frustrated by this. This situation is primarily down to the boards inaction imo.

I get a little frustrated reading on here that if we spend a bit of money in transfers we could end up like Sevco or the doldrums of the 90s, it’s fatalistic fantasy imo that suits other posters agendas on here that the board are doing a fabulous job across all areas and should be exempt from criticism because the team is successful.

  7. Off on a tangent as usual.

Which TV producer, planner or executive decided they should televise the Hamacad home fixture and not the attractive Champions against genuine second place contenders?

    Contrast the games.

A full house at Celtic Park, home of Champions.

    A 5,000 attendance in Hamilton.

A free scoring Hibs side taking on the Champions.

A lower half of league side who have scored 7 league goals to date.

The prospect of an open attacking game with the promise, fulfilled, of spectacular goals.

Contrast with two struggling sides trying to cope with an artificial surface.

I imagine the SPFL were inundated with requests from TV stations around the globe to transmit the Sevco Accies borefest, and no one wanted the game of the season so far.

What TV executive got reamed Monday for their choice?

What was the excuse? No Catholics would be watching due to them attending mass?

The game from the home of the Champions would highlight all that’s good in our game?

Or maybe they just want to show just how poor Sevco really are?

Or how poor our game officials are?

Highly improbable I know but that will be the impression left for anyone unfortunate enough to view the game from Hamilton.

I would much rather that, the fans continued their fantastic work with the foodbanks etc, but, I would be equally, if not, more proud of the fans, if they withheld their season ticket money, until, the tory PLC board were no longer in control, and with such ingenuity within the fan base, the Tory PLC board would no longer be needed to manage the fans money. Is that to difficult for you to get ?

I think that it will probably be decided by a toss of a coin, which if we win, will actually only have been to see who calls first.

In other words, naw. Know your place.

Actually,I don’t think the dressing rooms are likely to be much different. It’s rugby, old boy. Noblesse oblige, and all that. And our shirts don’t clash. Ours are a legendary work of art,and theirs are a pile of ordure.

  21. What is the Stars on

If I was Ceo of Celtic Fc I would run the business as follows.

    Firstly, my salary..average industrial wage

Players salary….average industrial wage, with a donation to the NHS or a charity of the players choice of the same amount annualy.

Transfer fees. I would refuse to pay any transfer fees (human beings should not be bought or sold)

I would reduce the price of season tickets by 25%.

I would refuse all commercial sponsorship unless the relevant companies could prove they enforced ethical policies in all their affairs and treated their employees fairly.

Finally I would organise monthly protest marches with the Green Brigade to highlight various worthy causes, climate change, homlessness, American pigdog imperialist chicanery, the plight of the Palestinians, state collusion in sectarian murders in Norn Iron etc.

    A club like no other.

And I am serious for a change
