Evidence is clear: Celtic are back

272

The evidence is clear: we’ve got our Celtic back.  The football on Saturday was better than at any point this season.  Four goals scored told only part of the story.  Odsonne Edouard alone hit the post three times, while Callum McGregor struck the crossbar and Scott Sinclair hit the post with the keeper out of his goal.

Faculties that were so elusive a few weeks ago, like passing and movement, were a joy.  Tom Rogic deserved his Man of the Match award, while Odsonne is back looking ominously difficult to play.  The loss of Scott Brown to injury was a worry, while his replacement, Scott Sinclair continues to struggle to recapture past form.  If you were within a mile of Celtic Park, you may also have heard me when Mikael Lustig was out-muscled for Hibs second goal.

Hibs looked a shadow of the team we expected in the first half.  Anyone who comes to Celtic Park with more lofty intentions than simply defending their 18-yard box had better be on form.  They objectively improved in the second half, but that would have been different if the woodwork did not come to their rescue so often.

I’m not going to tell you I’m confident about Leipzig, but I am looking forward to Murrayfield on Sunday.  We look ready to defend our treble.

I get a little frustrated reading on here that if we spend a bit of money in transfers we could end up like Sevco or the doldrums of the 90s, it’s fatalistic fantasy imo that suits other posters agendas on here that the board are doing a fabulous job across all areas and should be exempt from criticism because the team is successful.

You should not be that frustrated as the arguments I have highlighted are rarely made here.

What you will read is :-

If we spend too much money then….

or, if agendas exist, they must exist for those who are criticising the Board because they, for parity of treatment, must believe the board are doing a rubbish job across all areas and must be exempt from praise whenever the team lose.

I believe PL added value when :-

He negotiated the add ons and sold Virgil at a level we all thought was a good price.

When Aiden and Stan renewed contracts prior to big money transfer, if, indeed, he had anything to do with it.

I believe PL lost us value when Artur Boruc was sold cheaply.

He also lost us value, despite the Lyon chief’s statement in his defence, when we sold Moussa as a distressed asset.

I have no idea if either PL or BR deserves credit for Boyata staying, but it has proven to be a good pragmatic decision, largely because the player has got on with it and not let it affect his form and the fans have decided to forgive his gross betrayal in Athens, which remains a large stain on his character.

There are usually more than 2 possible explanations for the transfer happening and the price and add-ons obtained. I rarely have the information at hand to decide whether PL is the villain or got the best deal in the circumstances, or whether others rescued the deal through their efforts for the club- i.e. it might have been all down to the altruism of Aiden and Stan and nothing to do with PL.

In those circumstances, I cannot be fully sure, despite my judgements above, if he is doing well or moderately, by industry standards (which are all quite mad anyway).

However, I stand by my view that there are many people who could do a pretty good impersonation of PL at less than half the cost. They might have to grow into the role, as he did too, but it is not a superhumanly-high bar to reach.

Executive bonus is just a boy’s club within our Bhoys club.

My main point is Brendan wasn’t supported properly by the board in the summer. He has stated publicly the need to replace outgoing players with similar quality- it didn’t happen and he clearly feels frustrated by this. This situation is primarily down to the boards inaction imo.

Considering the progress we’ve made under Brendan and our stash of considerable cash in the bank our failure to strengthen in the summer is scandalous .

I don’t disagree much with your other points raised and agree fully on some but I do reserve the right to be as frustrated as I see fit when reading CQN :))

A regular in the speculative stuff in Italian football papers..Standard line is –

Contracted to Benfica until 20 21 . Been tracked by Maurizio Sarri since he was at Red Star . Sarri / Chelsea need a goalscorer / Marotta is way too hit and miss. The solution to that is Jovic.

  7. Season Ticket holders now have the opportunity to buy an additional ticket for the Bhoys’ League Cup semi-final this weekend.

These additional tickets (one per Season Ticket Holder) are on sale on a first-come, first-served basis, priced:

    West Stand £25 adult/£10 concessions

West Stand £30 adult (no concessions)

Tickets not going too well? Hmmm, could be embarrassing if the huns are the only team to sell their allocation.

Alternatively, the truth is that fans of the other teams quite rightly feel hard done by. Not that the SPFL will care.

  9. Few Huns — in both the MSSM and the general Hun support — are ever negative about their team.

The Huns, although only 5th in the League, have sold their full allocation for the LC Semi-Final.

Many in both the Celtic support and the MSSM are regularly negative about Celtic.

Celtic, second in the League, have not sold their full allocation .

    Is there a connection?

    JJ

  10. Robinbhoy`s post might suggest otherwise but it does tell us that Celtic fans are not falling over themselves to buy tickets. I feel, unlike us, that the Huns would have bought many more had they been made available.

  12. Anyway, have we not got a game before then ?

Just thinking about that, an Away European fixture MIGHT be a factor in our pick up of LC semi tickets.

    Regardless, cheerio for now.

Fast forward 130 odd years, and you get supporters of the newly formed, Celtic Football Club since 1994, sitting on a supporters website, discussing how many £millions that, the CEO should be annually entitled to, for winning the one horse Scottish pub league, better known as, the SPFL.

    Deary me.

Saudi money – how appropriate and what great timing. We wouldn’t be invited to such a tournament, as we are not in a big enough TV market.
