Evidence mounts as Celtic look set to further improve

930

I’d a look at the fixture list preseason and didn’t expect we’d be top of the table so early, having played only three games with 10 teams having played four, and two of those games coming against our nearest challengers from last season.

But we stepped up to the task. The earlier win at Tynecastle and beating Aberdeen 4-1 on Saturday has issued a warning to all. Bookmakers are offering Celtic’s title odds of between 2/9 and 1/7, and have created a separate ‘Betting without Celtic’ competition. One of Brendan’s jobs will be to remind players that they need to earn the points every time the whistle goes. Defeats come quickly to teams operating at 95%.

Not that we had it all our own way on Saturday. Aberdeen disrupted our rhythm and passing in the middle part of the game. You can see how Brendan has changed the way we use the ball in possession, but there’s still a bit of work to do for it to become more natural looking.

The goals were outstanding. Leigh Griffiths’ effort would be immortalised in song, if one of the Barcelona players due to visit Celtic Park soon had managed it. Tom Rogic’s technique is of particular importance.

Celtic face a lot of packed defences; having someone able to reliably hit an unstoppable shot from around 22 yards changes how a defence will shape up to play us. This is a player Leeds United thought they could buy for £1m recently.

I was pleased to see Dorus de Vries make his debut. He had little to do, and could do nothing about the Aberdeen goal, but if he’s to be relied upon in any of the important games ahead he needed an outing as a Celtic player.

It was equally important Erik Sviatchenko came through 90 minutes with Kolo Toure. The defence is set for some almighty challenges ahead, and will need to face them with little common game-time to allow partnerships to be cemented.

There’s a degree of trepidation for the Champions League task ahead, but pretenders to our domestic dominance beware: evidence mounts that this is a good Celtic team – one which will continue to improve for some time to come.

The interference has gone beyond trolling and into SMSM.

With regard to STV’s Article of 20 June by Grant Russell covered by The Clumpany three possibilities exist.

Grant was pursuing the story off his own bat having pursued Celtic Company Secretary with a camera man in tow after the SFA AGM in 1st June. The one where Regan told the world there was no case for SFA to answer on Res12. Grant was trying to find out if Celtic were writing to UEFA in support.

But if that is dismissed then the possibilities are:

STV GRANT was working entirely independent of SFA with no agenda other than the truth and he was fed a line by UEFA Media that omitted the key new club/company words in reply to Res12 solicitor.

STV Grant was working with the SFA after they received a copy of the UEFA reply to throw smoke over that reply, but he was not told about the bit in the reply that troubled the SFA. In short he was duped by the SFA.

STV was working with SFA with full knowledge of contents of UEFA letter and was part of an SFA attempt to cause confusion.

Given he did make enquiries of Res12 position before he published that points to being duped if his enquiries genuine.

He was given no information other than check out The Offshore Game stuff and advised to hold off going public with what he had, but did not heed and the omission of the new club/company info from his article raised eyebrows as it was going to come out and did on 8th July on CQN.

All of what has happened is not indicative of an SFA organisation who are certain of their facts and if those facts as they presented them in the past will stand the scrutiny of history.

  2. Emeralbee, fantastic article on dealing with trolls. Something we should all follow! I admit I did get sucked into the negativity last week and owe Tony Donnelly and The Green Man an apology for having a pop at them!

Go to England in a minute, division 5 or not.

Let the Huns and their acolytes die a death up here; no Celtic, no ‘Old Firm’ TV deals to lubricate their ducts down Hampden way.

Thats not what they are saying. They are giving it the O– F— spiel. They would want both teams. Why would we want to do this?.We can be the biggest fish in the pond in Scotland for the foreseeable future, swatting them aside.Far too much money to be lost by us IMHO.We would be back to square one again with the Huns.

Not for me.An invite into The Championship.Would bite your hand off for that.

  4. Auldheid – I was playing for a very non descript team in London in my early 20’s on Saturday afternoons. I was a centre half. Made many blocks and tackles but the block I made with my tackle is the standout one in my memory.

    Agony.

Full blast shot from about two yards from the striker. I made myself big as you do, legs out, dangly bits exposed and whack…..,

    Oh dear god.

I also caught one from a lassie I was friendly with too. Messing about stepping off a bus I said something to her (can’t remember what) and as she had stepped off the bus in front of me as she turned round to give me a friendly dig with her hand bag, I was on the step of the bus above her and she caught me square where she thought my stomach would be….

I was doubled over on my knees in the street in the middle of the day. Must’ve been a fine sight!!!

  5. LOSTINBENIDORMONTHEWAYTOBARCA on

    I wonder…….! TROLLS

I never really wonder about or consider about peoples backgrounds in Celtic or not.

I just read the point made by them and well…. move on.

This is but a small thread in the patchwork quilt in the Celtic Duvet which covers us all

I am probably not vocal enough

  6. Seems a lot of ifs and buts for the James McCarthy deal to go through, would be great to see but going to be very difficult as I’m sure Everton will want a permanent transfer .

  7. What’s the point in going to England if the big guns are sounding out a European League.

If we started in L5, and even if we managed back to back promotions to the Premiership, I reckon there’s a real chance it would be not what it is now.

How easy would it be to access a Euro League if we’ve been out of European competition for 5 years?

Far better to stay put and stay in the hearts and minds of European football.

  8. Not been on for a couple of days . Whats all the chat about Celtic joining division 5 in Engerland ? Could someone bring me up to speed, thanx

  9. The Celtic blog. 1.02.

I’m surprised at the comment about 4 teams from the major 4 teams automatically qualifying, formalises what already happens.

That will be why Italy only has 2 teams in this years tournament then.

At present Italy only have 2 automatic qualifiers and a third, Roma, who had to play in the final qualifying round and lost.

The new set up is incredibly favourable to Italy, if you take into account points for previously winning then even more so.

Our route for qualifying has been reduced from five teams to four making it more difficult to qualify.

Of the five top seeded teams in our qualifying route only Celtic and Legia made it through.

  11. Is Joe Garner related to Willie Garner?

Although Willie was a defender (allegedly), Joe is a striker (also allegedly) who scored six times for his previous club last season.

Their playing styles are very similar.

  16. “But Rangers FC won’t. They’ll slip into liquidation within the next couple of weeks with a new company emerging but 140 years of history, triumph and tears, will have ended.

No matter how Charles Green attempts to dress it up, a newco equals a new club. When the CVA was thrown out Rangers as we know them died.

They were closed and a newco must start from scratch although their fans will insist the history will be boxed up with the strips and balls and carried into the future with the new club.

Technically that history belongs to something else, some other company but even though the governing bodies appear consumed by technicalities and protocol supporters have other priorities.

They strive for continuity and Rangers fans will never be separated from or denied their past.

The name might change slightly, there will be a new owner, new players and a new beginning. But somehow nothing will have changed for many of the people who buy the tickets”

  17. WINNING CAPTAINS on 28TH AUGUST 2016 5:35 PM

WC, great post. I didn’t have time to respond earlier because there is so much in it.

Firstly, I am never surprised about the Machiavellian nature of the SMSM. They have been propping up the SFA and their desire to uphold the establishment club (1872 – 2012) for as long as I have been able to read and longer. They were willing to do the same for the bastard child of Charles Green, the SFA and SPFL who now play out of Govan. The fact that the SFA have had enough pleases me no end. I am certain that most, if not all of this u-turn is down to the spotlight they are under as a result of Resolution 12.

For those who may think this is something bubbling under the surface and not really being addressed by the SFA, I would suggest that is very far from the truth. The leaking of the UEFA letter and the fact that now some “rogue” elements of the SMSM decided to ask a few questions will not have gone down well at Hampden. The incumbents at the SFA must now be thinking they are on borrowed time and looking at how to extricate themselves from the hand-in-glove existing they have had with both Rangers and Sevco over the years. The clock is ticking!

As for the innuendo, libel, threats and intimidation, I am sure that you and the rest of the team working on behalf of all Scottish football fans are big enough and strong enough to take it and continue to good fight. Truth will out!

Thank you and keep the faith; we are alongside you in spirit at least!

  18. West Brom right back Cristian Gamboa having a medical in Glasgow ahead of proposed move to #Celtic

  19. Long time lurker here, don’t often feel the urge to contribute as you guys do an excellent job there, but breaking my habit as being from Costa Rica, I am hugely excited to see Cristian Gamboa linked with Celtic. I’m a big fan of his and simply would love to see him in the hoops. I hope it comes to pass

  20. According to the English rags McCarthy has no shortage of admirers with a long line of clubs supposed to be interested. At last count they had Leicester, Sunderland, Stoke, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Southampton all interested in a permanent deal for a reported fee of £18M-£20M. As such I can’t see why Everton would want to let him go on a loan deal especially when we will never be able to afford they sort of transfer fees to sign him permanently. The only way I can see McCarthy coming to us is in a last minute short-term deal before the window shuts if a permanent deal falls through.

  21. This bank holiday nonsense is tiring. Helped with some DIY, weeded the garden, pruned the roses, ran Mrs to dentist and back , off to th dump with broken door, only now sat on my arse. Better off at work? No chance.

Good to know you’ve seen him play and are in favour! Sounds like an upgrade on what is there already taking into account Lustigs fitness issues and Saidy Jankos… well, just Saidy Janko..

  23. £20 million for McCarthy is an outrage. He’s a decent player but honestly that is ridiculous.

  24. A centre midfielder of quality – a big ask but a must in my opinion.

Hopefully we will be planning for January and next summer too.

When do the players get back from this bloody international bore fest?
