Evidence mounts as Celtic look set to further improve

930

I’d a look at the fixture list preseason and didn’t expect we’d be top of the table so early, having played only three games with 10 teams having played four, and two of those games coming against our nearest challengers from last season.

But we stepped up to the task. The earlier win at Tynecastle and beating Aberdeen 4-1 on Saturday has issued a warning to all. Bookmakers are offering Celtic’s title odds of between 2/9 and 1/7, and have created a separate ‘Betting without Celtic’ competition. One of Brendan’s jobs will be to remind players that they need to earn the points every time the whistle goes. Defeats come quickly to teams operating at 95%.

Not that we had it all our own way on Saturday. Aberdeen disrupted our rhythm and passing in the middle part of the game. You can see how Brendan has changed the way we use the ball in possession, but there’s still a bit of work to do for it to become more natural looking.

The goals were outstanding. Leigh Griffiths’ effort would be immortalised in song, if one of the Barcelona players due to visit Celtic Park soon had managed it. Tom Rogic’s technique is of particular importance.

Celtic face a lot of packed defences; having someone able to reliably hit an unstoppable shot from around 22 yards changes how a defence will shape up to play us. This is a player Leeds United thought they could buy for £1m recently.

I was pleased to see Dorus de Vries make his debut. He had little to do, and could do nothing about the Aberdeen goal, but if he’s to be relied upon in any of the important games ahead he needed an outing as a Celtic player.

It was equally important Erik Sviatchenko came through 90 minutes with Kolo Toure. The defence is set for some almighty challenges ahead, and will need to face them with little common game-time to allow partnerships to be cemented.

There’s a degree of trepidation for the Champions League task ahead, but pretenders to our domestic dominance beware: evidence mounts that this is a good Celtic team – one which will continue to improve for some time to come.

  1. I think Rosenborg signed Gamboa as a replacement for Lustig when he came to Celtic,

No surprise Brendan is in Majorca, dosen’t he have a house over there?

Papertalk, this always happens when we are linked with a player, James Forrest seems to think he will come no matter what koemam and the paper say. We’ll see. Cracking wee player. who knows.

Brenda wants him so let’s see what happens. He’s upheld his side of the bargain with the group stages.

  4. just had an bizarre chat in work with what I thought was a decent hun.

turns out they are all completely bonkers.

they are still gonna push us for the title.

they have had a tougher start fixture wise than us????? I know!

the press are lying about Lescott its a tim conspiracy to discredit MW

BBC commentators and studio guys are pro celtic.

went berserk on mention of Suttons comments ranting

“BT are a disgrace, they are all anti rangers, did ye see the panel they had for the champions league last week, Strachan hartson mjallby” I couldn’t hold my laughter at that point.

I said has Senderos tied his left trainer yet…that medical is been goin for a week now”

poor guy, I almost felt sorry for him…then remembered what they are.

    anyhow.

McCarthy and Gamboa in b4 deadline.

a striker on loan is a possible…but it will be a late one if it happens.

    expect 3 out.

If this route to English football had been available 5 years ago I have been all for it. But now with the changes being made to the CL I think it’s more important than ever that we try to maintain our profile in the CL. I don’t think this will be the end of the changes, I can see it moving to a European Super league format in the near future. If we spend 4 to 5 years in the lower reaches of England we’ll be off the radar.

If there is to be a Euro Super League we should do whatever we can to be involved.

  6. On Gamboa. My son asked his West Brom supporting friend this morning about Gamboa and Wisdom. He said neither were great but of the two Gamboa would be the better signing. Seems he suffered from Pulis’s fixation with playing centre halfs at full back.

  7. Barcabhoy,

L5 will not do Sevco PR for free and the invoice would be hefty. I assume CFC have some form of guarantee that the 10th Sept ticket money has to be paid on a certain date. With the previous Ibrox based club CFC had to request payment up front if I remember correctly. Robbing Peter to pay Jabba !

if you mean Papa John — he is defo a tic fan from kirkie—long story.

  8. Just had a look at Gamboa on YouTube. The video is titled Cristian Gambia Speed, says it all.

  9. I had the pleasure over the weekend of bumping into the Coatbridge Musical society ( I think) – A group of about 30/40 Tims from Coatbridge/Calderbank and Airdrie who were in Galway for the weekend. They even managed to get the Celtic game streamed onto the big screen in one of the pubs and spent the weekend in various pubs playing Celtic and Irish songs. The Bhoys made a big impression on the people of Galway – there was pictures and videos of them playing music down the Salthill promenade in the sunshine yesterday on facebook. Hail Hail lads!

  10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ-EtKXSRzw His greatest attribute is speed, which allows him to recover well when out of position, so he can defend, but seems to have an uncanny ability for reaching seemingly impossible passes to place a perfect cross. For Costa Rica he always gets picked in spite of lack of football at WBA.

Just had look back, a wee bit of in fighting and maybe just some misunderstandings!

Main thing though…young Miss DOC is on the road to recovery, I’m sure she will catch up with her uni work. Glad all is well. Hail Hail

  13. I’m aware it’s the silly season but read online that Celtic have been looking at taking Jordan Rhodes on loan from Boro but they want assurances that he will receive game time. We definitely need another striker as after Griff and Moussa we are down to Ciftci but don’t think any player should be getting guarantees of game time, particularly when Griff is playing out of his skin.

  14. From a West Brom supporting mate of mine.

He was signed by Alan Irving just before he was fired. I really like him, fast attack minded full back but maybe a bit too attack minded for the Pulis model of hulking great big defenders so he never got a chance. Would really suit Rogers attacking style, as I said will be sad to see him go. Good signing for the Hoops!

Don’t know about ‘Cristian Gamboa Speed’ more like ‘Izzy on Speed’!

Except it looks like he can cross a ball. Skillful with it..

  16. not a great believer in signing players that can’t get a game for their own 1st eleven , will reserve judgement until i see him playing in the hoops.

Thanks for that. No intention to malign Papa John. My recollection is that the poster guarantor went by the moniker “Papa Joe” and seemed to be based in Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal. No disrespect to anyone from Kirkie.

Wouldn’t worry too much about that, lot of scope with the big squads down south and elsewhere, good players not always getting the chance they deserve – players often getting picked on reputation and pecking order(see Joe Hart only losing his Citeh place, despite numerous mistakes, after best part of 300 appearances!)

It allowed us to get guys like Sutton, Vega, Thompson and is sometimes more of an indictement of the manager not playing them than the player themselves…sometimes…

  24. Thanks for the welcome messages, I’ve only been here for about 8 years and this is the second set of welcome messages but cheers and no, not a hun. Any other CR players? There’s Bryan Oviedo who is quite good at left back, unfortunately a series of injuries have hampered his career, he plays for Everton, and famously scored the winner at Old Trafford a few seasons back but didn’t make the world cup in Brazil due to injury.
