EX-CELT BANNED AFTER ‘CORRUPT’ CLAIMS

FORMER Celtic fans’ favourite Emilio Izaguirre has been BANNED by Honduran football authorities after sensationally accusing them of being corrupt.

The veteran defender returned to his homeland to play for Motagua after two successful spells at the champions.

However, his side lost out on the national championship on goal difference on the final game of the season when Olimpia clinched the title with a 4-0 win against Marathon.

And after the game, international left-back Izaguirre, as reported in the Daily Record, blasted: “It’s a shame what Olimpia have done and how referees have helped them this season.

“The league here will never improve if this keeps happening. I spent 10 years in Scotland and this kind of thing doesn’t exist.

“I had faith that Olimpia would not buy their way to the title and that Marathon players were professional, but I was obviously wrong.”

Izaguirre was hit with a two game suspension from the Honduran FA for his comments as well as a £300 fine.

The 33-year-old star, who lost his place at the Hoops due to the emergence of Kieran Tierney, was forced to climb down and he added: “I made my comments right after the game had finished when I was obviously emotional and very disappointed.

“I apologise to everyone at Olimpia and Marathon. They were worthy champions. so congratulations to them.”

Izaguirre won seven Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups during his time at Parkhead.
