FORMER Celtic star Mike Galloway has sadly passed away at the age of 60.

The versatile performer cost £500,000 when Billy McNeill bought him from Hearts in June 1989.

Galloway, who could play in central defence, midfield and even had a spell up front, made a total of 195 appearances for his boyhood favourites before being forced to retire prematurely following a car crash in August 1995.

He was on loan at Leicester City at the time after agreeing a temporary switch in February earlier that year.

Born in Oswestry, Galloway earned one cap for Scotland in a qualifying defeat against Romania.

He also played for Berwick Rangers, Mansfield Town and Halifax Town during his career, according to a report in the Scottish Sun.

Following the near-fatal road accident, Galloway battled his difficulties to move into coaching with Tranent Juniors and later Wooler, Coldstream, Berwick United, Eyemouth United.
