EX-CELT’S RED CARD AGONY

FORMER Celtic defender Jack Hendry was red-carded in Scotland’s 3-0 Nations League collapse against Switzerland at Hampden this evening.

The centre-back was banished in the 11th minute following a foul on Dan Nydoye after being outpaced in a foot race for a through ball.

The referee originally booked Hendry and awarded a penalty-kick, but VAR pictures showed the offence was just outside the box.

The centre-back, who now plays in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, was dismissed for denying his opponent a clear goalscoring opportunity.

SWISS BLISS AND SCOTS WOE…Nico Elvedi celebrates his country’s second goal with Oli McBurnie and Angus Gunn left helpless at Hampden this evening.

It got worse for new boss Sebastien Pocognoli and his players when the Swiss netted from the direct free-kick with Rocardo Rodriguez’s effort flashing past Angus Gunn to his right.

The new Scots boss immediately replaced striker Keiron Bowie with another ex-Celt in Stephen Welsh who took Hendry’s place alongside Scott McKenna.

The Scots tried tried desperately to get back into the contest, but were undone when the visitors claimed a second 10 minutes after the interval.

A corner-kick from the left wasn’t dealt with and was sent in again by Ndoye from the right. Defender Nico Elvedi got in front of Oli McBurnie to sidefoot a close-range drive beyond the exposed Gunn.

The keeper should have done better, though, in the 82nd minute when he allowed a shot from Zeki Amdouni to fly through his hands to complete the scoring.

The Scots now face the trip to North Macedonia on Saturday evening and bring down the curtain on the opening section of the competition in Glasgow a week tonight with an encounter against Slovenia, with whom they drew 0-0 at the weekend.
