Examining sentiment ineffective governance

587

You’ll remember the days of the season ticket waiting list. Then came the imaginary waiting list, which existed a while after seats were openly available. Now anyone can browse onto the Celtic web site and view exactly how many seats are available, and where, inside Celtic Park. It tells a fascinating story.

There’s the odd solitary seat and a few hundred with restricted views but that aside only the previously-closed part of the Lisbon Lions upper is not subscribed – and a significant number of tickets there will not include games against Newco, who are likely to ask for their entire entitlement according to league rules.

We’ve not seen anything like this since 1995 when Celtic Park reopened. Season 1994-95, at 34,000 capacity Hampden, was far from inspiring. We didn’t even sell-out a late-season game against Oldco, but Fergus had mortgaged our future on a partly-built 40,000 seater stadium, with projects underway to finish the job.

I looked at the empty seats at Hampden that day in 1995 and wondered if Fergus had blown his money. It didn’t look possible that we’d come anywhere close to filling a much larger stadium. As last season came to an end today’s ticket bonanza looked equally unlikely (although I did expect a pick-up).

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to examine sentiment too closely, just be grateful when you have it and know that it can change quickly when it’s against you.

Noting the increase in match day traffic around Celtic Park, you have to wonder how many millions of man hours will be wasted sitting in immobile cars and buses because Police Scotland no longer man traffic lights to allow spectators to leave the area quickly after events.

That’s another cost of our Offensive Behaviour’ Bill. Ponder that when you’ve moved 1 mile in an hour next season. Event-related gridlocks are another manifestation of ineffective governance. For decades police had budget to control traffic junctions at major events, not any more, in Scotland, anyway.

  1. As another suggestion, is it possible to enlist the help of the Green Brigade to do a massive TIFO on Resolution 12 at the first home league and European games? That’ll give it plenty of coverage around the UK and Europe!

That could also be crowd funded if they can’t afford the dosh.

  3. WC,

Going by the ,up until now, lack of response from our esteemed Board, these T-Shirts could be collectors items in a few years if there are collectors out there collecting memorabilia on “Glorious failures”.

It has now gone on long enough.Just how long does it take to issue a statement?.The shareholders have done their bit,the fans have done theirs with the ST sales, the amount of effort put in by the Resolutioners has been monumental, yet we still await”The statement”.

If the magnificent 4 are still in contact with our Board on this, its about time they demanded a statement from them,or let us know of their refusal to issue one.As I said yesterday, what our enemies had hoped for looks like is coming to pass.No momentum, and a slow lingering death to this matter,no matter what we do to keep it alive.

This could be a betrayal on a par with a guy with a beard, kissing the cheek of another guy 2000 years ago in Gethsemane.

Or a club like every other. Res 12 is a governance issue, it has repercussions for every club in Scotland. Any one of them could have complained to UEFA with that evidence. Have any others? Are their fans tying themselves in knots over it? It seems not. Have any other clubs’ fans even taken this to their board for action?

We all need the club to say something, that’s for sure but if they’re going to be the sole voice on this, then I find their caution unsurprising. To accuse your governing body of corrupt practices needs to be done carefully. It must however, be done.

Disgraceful decision by The Guardian but sadly no surprise.

Free press,as such, in this country does not exist.

We have the second most unelected representatives in the world, only China have more, with the bloated self preservation society which is The House Of Lords. Fail as an M.P. no worries, we will get you a cushy number in a House Of Lords as long as you don’t rock the boat. It doesn’t matter if the electorate voted you out, we the establishment, will get you back in unelected.

This is what the Res 12 ghuys are up against, the establishment protecting their own.

You still haven’t answered the question – why do you spend so much time digging up Paul67 for what you see as his lack of action against the injustices you think are heaped on the support but don’t do anything yourself to right these wrongs?

The other night someone suggested you start your own blog, any news on this? or anything else constructive?

11 years you’ve been channeling your energies into criticising the board through what you seem to think is their proxy, i’d suggest that if you really were interested in affecting change rather than just shouting your mouth off you might have chosen a different strategy.

Its easy hiding in the comments sections of blogs, maybe its time you changed tack and put yourself and your heart-felt beliefs in the firing line like Paul67 has, who knows you might actually do some good for Celtic

  11. @Clydesider – it’s now down to less than 570 tickets available so it looks like a sell out before the weekend! The Celtic site is also advertising afew childrens season tickets in the family section so that’s just about done now as well. 15. I concur with Neganon that it is fair to ask Paul67 to comment on Res12 and the boards inaction up to now.

This is an open blog and it’s original concept was to help educate the wider support on the relevance of bean counting in relation to how Celtic as a business operated in the market were our product is sold and compete’s.

Asking Paul67 to comment on a period that has cost the business of Celtic PLC financially and likely the shareholders in terms of shareprice during the period, if they so happenned to have invested with the view to financial gain, is not a crime.

It has to go both ways. Comment and opinion should be offered not only determined by that which will shine a positive light on our PLC but also that which may or may not shine into the darke corners the PLC may not wish for the general customer base to focus.

Calling Paul67 out on this is becoming more timely and appropriate as each day passes without proper support form our PLC with regards Res12 and for those who have work so diligently to keep the issue in focus and more.

It is Paul67’s blog and he has every right not to comment or comment appropriately as he so chooses. But given the light that Paul has happily shone on others outwith the club is becoming evident by the day that this is a blog that will focus on only that which is deemed positive for the club financially and only external elements are targets.

Having said that, I have the utmost respect to Paul67, even though I would prefer more comment on our clubs failings, given that he could easily put a stop to each and every one of us from posting any negative comment with regards our club and leaves each of us to air our opinions.

That is pretty fair considering the personal cost to Paul67 in running the blog.

    So it’s eachy peachy.

  20. Interesting discussion on the clubs attitude to the Living Wage.

That is the real Living Wage not Scratchy and Sniffy’s kid on living wage.

That answer has been with us all week.

Pay real money, attract the best and the revenue will follow.

If it was good enough for BR then it is good enough for the match day grunts.

UK / Low wage economy = Terrible productivity and a lack of growth

Pulling students of the street and paying them as little as possible generates the same results.

Pay over the odds –£10 per hour — pick the best and provide real training.

That is the way the club should be heading -/ the increased revenue will pay for it.

Anyone who has had to deal with the food kiosks on match day will recognise that poor staff and poor service is costing us money. We need to move away from the penny pinching and the learning on the job that is a poor reflection on the club and the way it works.

  21. Can I again reiterate my gratitude to the leaders of Res 12, like many others I await the board’s statement on this.

  22. I honestly don’t know how many fans among the 52,000 season ticket holders for 2016/17 will know much about Res12, how much they know or how much it influences their decision making.

I do know that among the Twitterati, CQN and regular fan site visitors it is hotter than hot. But is that an echo chamber pumping out more noise than befits their economic influence? I genuinely don’t know.

I do know it matters to me, and I’m Joe Average among the perennial season ticket holders. Did it influence my decision to renew? Well, yes, I held back and committed when I read so may of the Res12 guys saying there were papers going top UEFA and movement from the Club. I’ll feel seriously stung if that’s not the case. The recent surge and feel good may have swung me to renew anyway, but that’s hypothetical now so irrelevant.

What I do know is Res12 matters to my old man, but he was always going to renew, and was dismayed at my reticence. I do know my 11 year old wants to come for her 3rd season, she’d have been saddened and confused at a non renewal (although I’m still pi**ed off at 2 games being removed from her ticket). As Joe Average then I reckon these decisions and factors play out in numerous households.

My point (at last) is that I think these sorts of considerations will be subject to discussions right now at Celtic Park. Right now a decision to obfuscate, delay, do nothing has been made a lot easier by what’s going on at the ticket office. The consequences may seem remote, particularly for anyone who doesn’t intend being there in a year or two.

But I think it would be a massive mistake for Celtic not to come out firmly on the fans’ side over this. We’re on a crest right now, but the trough will be deeper if there are fewer to fill it when it comes around as it always does.

But much more importantly they are custodians, it’s the right thing to do and the gravitas of this issue ensures that history will be as cruel to them as it is kind to our legends if they don’t.

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

I sincerely hope that we will, led by the Green Brigade, be singing with some gusto a suitably tweaked version of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel’s ‘(Come up and see me) Make me smile’ whenever we meet and give a Brendan-Rodgers-inspired football lesson to the The Rangers next season. I also hope they play it over the tannoy before every game we play them! Perhaps we could also buy it and get it to #1, just to wind them up? :-)

Have a close look at the aptness of the following lyrics; so much of these lyrics ring true and they certainly make me smile! :-) I am sure they will make you smile too. :-)

You’ve done it all, you’ve broken every code,

And pulled the rebel to the floor.

You spoilt the game, no matter what you say,

For only metal – what a bore!

Blue eyes, blue eyes, how come you tell so many lies?

Chorus: Come up and see me, make me smile

Or do what you want, run on wild.

There’s nothing left, all gone and run away.

Maybe you’ll tarry for a while?

It’s just a test, a game for us to play,

Win or lose, it’s hard to smile.

RES12T, RES12T, it’s from yourself you have to hide!

Chorus: Come up and see me, make me smile,

Or do what you want, run on wild.

There ain’t no more, you’ve taken everything,

From my belief in Mother Earth.

How can you ignore my faith in everything,

Cos I know what Faith is and what it’s worth!

Away, away, and don’t say maybe you’ll try.

Chorus: Come up and see me, make me smile,

Or do what you want, run on wild.

    Yours in Celtic,

  27. Blantyrekev,

Well said! Like you I was reluctant to renew two painfully expensive seats in the Fatcat lounge. I did so encouraged by the mood music around Resolution 12. My heart tugged harder than my head. I also worry about the general lack of awareness of R12 amongst our support. If they understood the objectives of R12 and knew of the sterling efforts of our brave resolutioners, our hand would be significantly stronger in pressing the Board for assertive action.

I do fear the Board hope the issue will fade and die. I hope I’m wrong.
