Excuses to fail

139

Events in the final international break of the season went in our favour.  Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor and Josip Juranovic were all rested.  Reo Hatate played his first 45 minutes football in a stress-free match against Vietnam, while Matt O’Riley had 20 minutes action for Denmark U21s.  Celtic players will return from international duty injury-free and sufficiently rested ahead of Sunday.

By comparison, Newco’s three Nigerian internationals were involved in an exhausting home draw with Ghana which was not enough to see them eliminated from the World Cup.  You and I know that these things can be overcome, but we also know Newco like an excuse to fail.  Now they have one readymade.

Whether they play Alfredo Morelos, who is carrying an injury, or leave him out, the Columbian’s condition gives them an additional excuse to fail.  This comes a week after they accused a group of fans of undermining their domestic and European challenges.  Give a team an excuse to fail and they will take it.  Maybe Newco know what to expect on Sunday.

  3. Gooooood morning all Tim’s across the globe.

This is my Friday as I’m off manana and Monday. Loadsabeercsc.

So nearly 5 weeks on and no Moderator or Paul67 have had the decency to email Big Jimmy. Pathetic.

As long as you spout crap on a daily basis, call Celtic supporters Dim Timmy, constantly call Celtic supporters names and if you get banned come on under a different moniker you are ok but do not dare to use a sweary word, which I might agree with if there were other rules in place to stop such tripe, but hey the Mods or Paul67 are to busy to respond to Jimmy. Anyway keep up the good work bhoys.

I know I would not treat people like that but if you can live with yourself then crack on.

Maybe you could turn up at the shipbank manana and have a pint with Jimmy instead of emailing him.

    All welcome

Thanks for the reply. I don`t know if it was a Garngad thing in the old days but we always said `half` rather than `hauf`. We also mixed things up for some strange reason. eg `Doon the town` or ` down the toon` . Strange.

In the club’s first league game on this day, Celtic beat St Mirren 3-0 at home thanks to goals from Patsy Gallacher, Joe Dodds and Jimmy McColl. The win extended Celtic’s unbeaten run to 59 games, a record which would subsequently stretch to 62 games and remain unsurpassed for 100 years until the Hoops set a new record of 69 games. Willie Maley’s side would go on to win the league title by 10 points that season, securing the club’s 14th league title and contributing to the 30 major trophies Maley would win as Celtic manager.

    1923

Joe Cassidy’s second-half goal handed the Celts a 1-0 win over Hibernian at Hampden in the Scottish Cup final. It was Celtic’s 10th Scottish Cup and saw the Hoops equal the record set by their Glasgow rivals Queen’s Park, who were the first and only other side to have lifted the trophy on 10 occasions at that point in time. The game was largely dominated by both defences and it took a mistake from Hibs keeper, Willie Harper to change the game. A cross from Jean MacFarlane tempted Harper off his line but the Hibs stopper misjudged the cross and Cassidy (below) headed in to give Celtic the lead

    1951

A 3-2 win over Raith Rovers at Hampden saw Celtic reach their first Scottish Cup final in 14 years. Jock Weir’s early goal was cancelled out by an own goal from Alec Boden, but the Celtic regained the lead shortly before half-time thanks to a goal from John McPhail (below). Rovers fought their way back into the game and drew level with just 10 minutes remaining. The game looked to be heading for a replay for all of one minute until Charlie Tully, who played some wonderful football that day, grabbed the winner. Jimmy McGrory’s side went on to win the final thanks to McPhail, who chipped the Motherwell keeper, John Johnston, to score a lovely goal and hand Celtic a 1-0 win.

    1965

Following a 2-2 draw in the first game, Celtic found their form in the replay of the Scottish Cup semi-final ran out 3-0 winners against Motherwell. Rather than announce the starting XI in advance, Jock Stein chose to keep the team a secret until the players were in the dressing room. It was only his sixth game as Celtic manager and he made just one change to the team that were held to a 2-2 draw four days earlier with Jimmy Johnstone making way for Stevie Chalmers. The Big Man’s tactical change paid off and Chalmers scored the opening goal. John Hughes and Bobby Lennox killed the game off, and the Hoops booked their place in the Scottish Cup final. Celtic went on to defeat Dunfermline 3-2 in the final in what proved to be a historic win for the club. Not only was it the first piece of silverware for the club since 1957, it was Jock Stein’s first trophy as Celtic manager and the spark that ignited the golden era.

    1979

Ronnie Glavin played his last game for Celtic on March 31, 1979. The Hoops midfielder scored a penalty in the game against Hibernian. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the two goals the Easter Road side scored in the first half. Jock Stein signed Glavin from Partick Thistle in November 1974 and the Glasgow Bhoy went on to score 50 goals in 155 appearances.

    2007

A delightful free-kick from Shunsuke Nakamura handed Celtic the lead against Dundee United at Tannadice shortly after the break. Gordon Strachan’s side looked to be leaving Tayside with all three points, particularly in light of Barry Robson being shown a late red card for a violent clash with Lee Naylor. But the Hoops had to settle for a point after Jon Daly found the back of the net on the turn from 18 yards, and the game finished 1-1.

    2019

In Celtic’s most recent game on this day, they all-but tied up the title by beating Rangers 2-1 and moving 13 points ahead of the Ibrox club at the top of the table. Both sides finished with 10 men, Morelos being red-carded and Dedryck Boyata going off injured in the 74th minute after Celtic had used their subs – Halliday also received a red card after the final whistle. Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring in the 27th minute, while Ryan Kent equalised in the 63rd. It was James Forrest who got the all-important winner four minutes from the end.

There was a mix of celebration and heartache for the Celtic players away on international duty, as the majority of the places for the World Cup were sealed.

One position yet to be filled for the Qatar 2022 tournament is between Scotland, Ukraine and Wales, but the Scots did have two friendly matches, with both Callum McGregor and Greg Taylor starting in the first of those – a 1-1 draw with Poland at Hampden.

In terms of World Cup qualification, Reo Hatate was involved as Japan earned their spot in the tournament, earning his first cap in a 1-1 draw with Vietnam. With Kyogo, Daizen Maeda and Yosuke Ideguchi all Japanese internationalists, Celtic could have four players in their World Cup squad.

Carl Starfelt was involved in the Sweden squad for their crucial World Cup play-offs, but after defeating the Czech Republic in the semi-finals, the Swedes lost out to Poland in the final and on a place at the World Cup.

There were friendly fixtures for more of the squad, as Josip Juranovic played 90 minutes on Saturday for Croatia in a 1-1 draw with Slovenia and was an unused substitute in a 2-1 win over Bulgaria.

Nir Bitton also started for Israel in the first of their two friendlies, playing the full match in a 2-0 defeat away to Germany.

Giorgos Giakoumakis, meanwhile, was back in the Greece international set-up, starting in a 1-0 win over Romania and coming off the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Montenegro.

In the Under-21s, Liel Abada netted in a 2-2 draw for Israel against Poland and Matt O’Riley made his first appearance for Denmark, coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw with Belgium.

Stephen Welsh started both of Scotland U21s’ European Championship qualifiers as they lost to Turkey and drew away to Kazakhstan through an injury-time equaliser.

Meanwhile, Johnny Kenny was on the scoresheet for the Ireland Under-19s in their 4-1 defeat to Portugal.

Loving your ‘On This Day’ feature every morning. I usually recognise a few names from the distant past and memories from when I was a bhoy or young adult.

A great intro to the blog each new day.

  8. Ticketmaster to me are making money when shouldn’t be ,they have nothing in Common with our fans ,whom they are ripping off ,possibly someone inside the club has sanctioned them ,is the Celtic Ticket Office got that bad that seek spivs like Ticketmaster to take the piss ,

  9. TIMBHO163,

Ticketmaster had me going round in circles yesterday, until my mate told me to give up. No ticket for the semi-final, although they gave me the impression I had 1. Anyway, I don’t have to pay 10 pounds for their “help”. Why Celtic has to employ them baffles me.

If you are referring to the £1.50 service charge on ticket purchases, that is standard throughout the online ticketing industry.

Celtic FC, like every club in the UK, does not have the technology and set-up to sell their own tickets online. It’s a bit like the Post Office. Companies use the PO to deliver their letters rather than employing their own postmen.

  11. So it’s a Con ,no wonder these characters make easy money while ripping off decent ordinary fans ,A messagese for Celtic Foundation start earning your corn by taking over Ticketmaster ,but could they or folk that look after the charity on good salaries,(that’s another joke)not wanting to rock the boat ?£.

Saw Ronnie Glavin playing for Barnsley on The Match programme the other day from some time in the late 70s or early 80s. I had forgotten all about him, he was the stand out player at that match as well. Was he the player who had a rocket shot and took the penalties and free kicks?

  14. Ronnie Glavin could fairly hit a ball. Did we get home from Partick? Played well alongside Kenny.
