Honda Civics flourish with a new driver

211

What a game of football!  That was 120 minutes of exhilarating action from two teams who wanted to win.  Celtic had by far the better of the exchange, but credit to Newco, who for the majority of the second half and with 10 men, took the game to the champions.  The headline facts show Newco survived until extra time despite their disadvantage, brought about by the most reckless challenge you will see all season, but Celtic were far better all over the field.

Johnny Kenny led the line.  His strength and link-up play was set the tone for Celtic to dominate the first half.  Scoring with a header direct from a corner kick is not easy (stats prove as much).  His defender was touch-tight, Johnny was four yards beyond the near post, yet rose and directed the ball high into the net.  Let’s remember, he turned 22 this summer; his career is all in front of him.

The only surprise when Auston Trusty was named Man of the Match was that the award did not go to Liam Scales.  Scales won everything in the air and executed a lunging tackle inside the box which is one for the ages.  Trusty’s award doubtlessly came as a result of him breaking the lines with the ball – something Celtic have badly missed out of defence in recent seasons.  The player had previously been discouraged from doing this, but was freed by his young Irish manager.

We all knew that one goal was probably not going to be enough for large parts of the second half before Newco’s penalty (a tad harsh, I thought).  It took this incident to shake Celtic into action, as they ended the regulation 90 minutes by peppering the Newco goal.  James Forrest’s introduction to the action had much to do with this.

Extra-time stared as the 90 minutes ended, with Celtic surging forward.  Jack Butland came to the rescue of Newco throughout the game, but three minutes into the added period, he was deceived by Callum McGregor’s thunderous strike from 25 yards.  The shot was still rising when it hit the net.

By this stage Newco were on the ropes and had no reply.  You and I will talk tomorrow about Callum Osmand.  The 19-year-old, making his second professional appearance (of the week and of his career), was an absolute handful.  Like Kenny earlier in the game, he was able to win and control forward passes, and test his defender.  The third goal came from an excellent Kieran Tierney delivery, with Callum timing his run and turning the ball into the net.

Thelo Aasgaard’s red card was for one of the highest and out of control challenges you are likely to see in the game.  Anthony Ralston’s shorts were ripped at the groin and his upper thigh bore visible abrasions.  Auston Trusty and Newco’s Derek Cornelius were both given the benefit of the doubt by referee Nick Walsh.  Newco have shouted lots about the former, without reference to the latter.  Losing is tough, I suppose.

As I walked down Aitkenhead Road after the game, I wondered what could have been, had we played Trusty last weekend, or either Kenny or Osmand in the Champions League qualifiers (both were unused subs for the first leg but did not even make the bench for the second).  What could have been……

I think we’ve used up our loans at the moment, so Shin might have to wait his turn at Celtic to get some game time.

    ——

AI says SPFL teams can loan x6 players out at a time and the website says we have x5 out currently. Shin sure seems to be taking time to settle in. Come January, our first team squad will have a Pusey-shaped hole (oo err missus) in it – as Jamahl will surely be going back to Citeh. Worth noting too that Shaun/Martin resisted the urge to play him (like BR did).

As for sticking/twisting on MON and SM… tho it could be the new manager(s) bounce, they do seem to offer a nice blend of veteran wisdom and coaching modernity. Plus, we wouldnt have to pay Ipswich 5mill compo.

As for our ‘mongrel’ quotient, I thought Trusty was in their faces all game long.

BTW, Cornelius’ tackle on Kenny was worse in intent than Auston’s careless tap on Butland’s napper.

  2. Funny that they (or the SMSM) don’t want talk about Cornelius.

As for the stupids and their revolving door Blue Broadcasting Corporation?

I’d be interested to know if my ‘hunch’ is correct: anybody know if the huns have complained about refereeing decisions every time we’ve beaten them since Willie Collum was appointed head of refereeing?

The demise of Crawford Allan removed a significant advantage for them. I reckon they want wee Willie replaced and someone like Beaton or Boabby Madden running things.

    Good morning CQN.

Have moved from buzzin’ to just chuffed.

GM this morning – I suspect you are correct. Some clever clogs will be able to check and confirm.

If it is not all matches, it is certainly most.

A poster on here recently made an astute observation

    (apologies can’t recall who)

Since the takeover the leadership culture at that club has not shifted on iota.

Last night’s statement, gleefully rushed out by the revolving door Blue Broadcasting Corporation, confirms it.

Pandering to, and whipping up, the masses.

And deploying barefaced hypocrisy with the claim they are doing so for the good of the game.

    49ers?

    Cowboys, more like.

  12. Dodds “Raked his studs down his face”

    Tavernier “Stamped on his head”

    I could go on….

    Media printing this without question.

But no mention of the stitches Butland had on field to keep his head on his shoulders???

  13. I know it’s a bit of a laugh that they complain after every defeat, but it must also put the officials on edge and nudge them towards favourable decisions in later games, to avoid the flak.

And I know we go through channels to complain about dodgy decisions against us, but that is not the only point. A separate issue is how we allow them to control the narrative. We should have a short, crisp public letter asking three questions of the referee review – why was Cornelius not sent off, why was it a penalty when Ralston appeared to be fouled, and why no penalty for clear hand ball at the end?

It probably shouldn’t but it drives me nuts that the alliance of the Huns and the BBC are slowly creating a narrative that they are victims of bias.

  14. I see MICHAEL STEWART ” Highlighting ” the Huns selective memories Today in SMS.

Rangers player KEMAR ROOFE with a VERY DANGEROUS High Boot onto the HEAD of the SLAVIA PRAGUE Goalie at Ibrox 2021.

ROOFE left the Goalie with FRACTURED SKULL and Bleeding head Injury as he was being carried off on a stretcher.

I dont think ROOFE was punished by the Ref that night, however subsequently UEFA dished out a 4 game Ban on ROOFE for the assault.

The HUNS APPEALED against UEFA’S DECISION to ban ROOFE…Despite the life threatening injuries towards the Slavia Prague Goalie inflicted by KENAR ROOFE….

What a Feckin CHEEK the Huns have to complain about Auston Trustys soft challenge on Butland.

  15. Rangers say they have “concerns about the consistency of refereeing in Scottish football”

Finally something we can all agree on, although I doubt they mean it in the same way as every other team which plays against them!

  16. Imo, it’s high time Celtic complained to BBC in London about their Scottish Sports Department’s bias. It’s blatantly obvious BBC Scotland has no influence over them (or, worse, endorses that bias).

  17. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

  18. Huns failing in their campaign to remove Willie Collum , the man who restricted Tav pen to a couple of penalties a season.

Only the Huns and Stuart Kettlewell regularly abusing the refs. The Huns are getting no change out of the SFA and will be told that decisions will even themselves out over a season.

Our best option is to say nothing in public , it has served us well and avoids the negative energy of paranoia to surround the club, hence the reason the Hun manager kept quiet after the game ….

    PCS @ 9:14am – I concur.

    I’ve long advocated …

(squawked on blogs would be more accurate)

… that Celtic should unilaterally ban BBC Scotland but warmly welcome BBC Network.

Concurrently, we (the fans) should actively discourage any Celtic leaning individual from any relationship with BBC Sport Scotland.

They are the Blue Broadcasting Corporation … literally.

The absolute absurdity of their editorial and employment stances needs amified and deservedly ridiculed.

You’re either our friend or theirs.

    You can’t be both.

As a secondary benefit, we would see where the motivations of any bloggers on the make really lie.

Any resolution will take years .. including, I confidently predict, some saltire draped eejit standing up in Holyrood shouting about London interfering with Scottish editorial independence.

… but we should start now.

  20. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

How ironic/funny would it be if Collum agreed with the huns and sacked Walsh, Dallas and McLean for incompetence.

Wishful thinking, but at some point I would hope the rest of Scottish football calls the huns’ bluff and proposed the use of foreign refs and a VAR room located in another country.

Not sure how that would work in practice.

We banned Tom English after a hatchet job on Brendan ( not as bad as Dermot’s as it turned out) , however the Hun influence on BBC Scotland has achieved precisely zero over the last umpteen years.

It would be more negative energy for Celtic to go down the whole scale banning route , anyway with MON at the helm they better mind what they say or print as the wee fella has previous for suing and winning.

Fair play, to the Celtic supporters that said VAR would be a good thing for Celtic. If you’ve seen all the clips from Sunday I don’t think we’re even close, unlikely to be from the small pool of referees in Scotland. BTW- it’s headed by a man that teaches in a Kafflik School don’t cha know? – not that we need to.

Meanwhile Sevco still aren’t even connected to the Rainjurz never mind the 49ers. How could things be any worse after the ‘takeover’ they blew the shares money on dross, and got pumped again by Celtic?

A Celtic that dominates domestic football even when we’re in ‘freefall’ we win, we never stop. Somebody thinks that because they got a free baseball hat they’re the 49ers? and the Rainjurz were going to be great again. They were helped by Hampden and VAR, and they still complain it just wasn’t enough, but time and tide has overtaken them.

They want the old Rainjurz back, they can’t have it because it doesn’t exist. They might march to Hampden ( again) to hell with this equality, we’ll kick and we’ll scream, it looks like the man whoever he was was, once said said “ When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression ” was dead right.

    Ekbhoy – cheers.

Yip, my suggestion is binary and simplistic for sure.

Calmer heads might provide a richer solution.

One of the motivations for Celtic to take such action though would be to show the fans they are listening to fan concerns.

The commercial media can be as biased as they like for all I care – they’ll live or die by the bottom line.

Our fans (reasonably) expect the state broadcaster to show a modicum of editorial integrity.

This department of that state broadcaster has been hijacked plain and simple.

It is an out of control R2ngers loving rabble.

IMHO, there is zero benefit in Celtic having any kind of relationship with them at this time.

On the negative energy angle I hear you but, if I may, a couple of points.

    1. The execution of the ban could be completely perfunctory. A statement akin to ..

“BBC Sport Scotland, which some of our fans label the Blue Broadcasting Corporation, has today had its media access to Celtic revoked.

The exceptionally professional BBC Network continues to be welcome at Celtic Football Club”

    And that’s it.

    2. Go bigger on the other media outlets, particularly those (Sly, TNT) throwing money at the Scottish game.

Faced with an easier life and a bigger slice of the pie? …

.. any foolish notions of solidarity with their fallen comrades at PQ will disappear like snow off a dyke.
