Exhilaration lands on hard plastic Rugby Park

333

All of that exhilarating football from Tuesday lands on the hard plastic surface of Rugby Park on Sunday, as Celtic return to the ground which last year cost Brendan Rodgers his 100% trophy record in Scotland, then resulted in an even worse performance and defeat in the league.

This will be Kilmarnock’s first home game since their hilarious win over Newco.  Their three games on the road since then resulted in a win at Tynecastle, and defeats to Ross County and Dundee.

They have not lost at home since August, when St Johnstone thumped them 0-3 as Derek McInnes rested several players before their Conference League trip to Norway.  That record will be tested by the flowing fabulousness of the champions.

For Brendan, this will be a rare occasion when he has a full squad to choose from and no game to worry about for two weeks.  He may choose to leave Cameron Carter-Vickers’ knees on the bench, but otherwise, I expect a full strength team to start, and get the game won early on.

    Deniabhoy re noise levels.

    Very interesting.

    Us – 129

    Galatasaray – 131

Just 2 Dbs required to be the world’s most successful at being loud football club.

Something to target at Bruges game perhaps?

  2. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Coefficient chat last night resurrected a bit of a myth.

No need for myths when the data is available.

    UEFA site data is clear.

    Bert Kassies’ is clearer.

I for one am very comfortable acknowledging R2ngers role as the biggest overall contributor to Scotland’s coefficients in the last 6 years.

But the majority of that contribution is four to six years old and in the rear view mirror.

In last three seasons (including this one) Scotland’s top two contributors have amassed 24 and 23 coefficient points respectively.

    Which is which?

Clue 1 : club with more has very loud supporters in their stadium (FACT)

Clue 2 : club with less claims to be the world’s most successful football club (MYTH)

  3. B2B – read many times that this season is the last time the SPFL winners go straight into group stages. I assume this oft repeated information is based on the drop off in coefficient points? So if we won, let’s say 3 more games and r2ngers (I like that) did something similar (maybe Hearts also get a couple of wins), does that make it possible that direct entry could again be achieved season after next?

I read somewhere that we are closing in on Austria to being back to where we need to be. If, as looks likely, we go straight in to the CL next season, then we would hopefully achieve something similar again to this season.

2-3 consecutive seasons or more participating in the new CL setup could effectively bury r2ngers (usual caveats apply of manager, team and budget staying similar or improving).

  5. Anyone know why Kilmarnock want another year playing on the plastic?.A vote was taken, what is their problem?.I have read nothing as to their reasons.

  6. Like, I presume most of us, I am still sucking the juice from Tuesday’s Masterclass. Where does that game stand in the living memory history of Celtic. I am in my 75th season supporting the club. My first match was in 1950.

For me, Leaving the 25th. May 1967 on it’s pedestal, as it is inviolate, when it comes to comparisons. As for the rest, I honestly can’t recall a match of that calibre. that ticked all the boxes.

The prematch atmosphere and going a goal down in all too familiar circumstances.

What followed was mindblowing in respect of our recovery. We went from one down to equality, then domination by producing a performance of skill, courage and commitment at a level I can’t ever recall seeing from a Celtic team, except see above.

Not one weakness in the team. Keep an eye on Engles. He has more then a touch of Booby Murdoch in him.

    Lord, take me now.

  7. TB,

The no plastic pitch rule is to be in place for season 26/27

Kilmarnock had planned to do it earlier. but are not saying costs are prohibitive and they will postpone it.

Several other championship clubs are going legal to make a challenge.

As i said yesterday, i find it a bit of a myth that our players cannot play on plastic.

Every player will have grown up playing/training on these pitches.

A wee quiz question, how many times do we think Celtic have been beaten on plastics pitches v grass over the last 24 years ?

how many Celtic players have been injured on plastic pitches ?

i expect a hard fought win tomorrow, the bounce and speed of the pitch will be a factor, but we have won at killie multiple times in the last 24 years.

  8. btw, celtic will have 3 plastic pitches across our facilities when the indoor pitch is finished.

it is a big fat waste of money for me, but people are consistenly moaning that it is something we need, i dont believe it.

Its not the injury thing for me,its the bounce and pace of the ball.Grass will cushion and slow the ball.

    31 May 2024

Scottish Premiership clubs have voted to ban artificial pitches in the top flight from the beginning of season 2026-27.

The SPFL this month issued a resolution to be voted on by all 12 Premiership clubs, with nine votes required for it to pass.

Next season’s top flight will be made up of Aberdeen, Celtic, Dundee, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibernian, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Rangers, Ross County, St Johnstone and St Mirren.

Livingston, relegated from the Premiership this season, and Kilmarnock have artificial pitches but Killie plan to return to a grass surface in 2025.

Hamilton Academical, who have won promotion to the Championship, are the only other club to have used artificial turf in the top flight between 2008 and 2011 and from 2014 to 2021.

A league spokesperson said: “The SPFL board has granted a two-year period to allow clubs with an artificial pitch to plan for the phasing out of artificial pitches in the top tier of Scottish football.

“The SPFL board recently approved plans for a Premiership-wide project to work with a leading pitch consultancy firm, which is regularly used by Uefa, to improve the standards of grass pitches in the cinch Premiership.

“The SPFL will be engaging with Premiership clubs on this project ahead of the new season.”

off the top of my head, we lost twice to kilmarnock last season,

other two defeats were to hearts.

i recall us getting beat twice at Livi, but is is some years ago,

but against both these teams i recall several absolute hammerings to them in their own pitches.

i dont rememebr us getting beat at hamilton ever,

and we once lost on plastic in the infamous cup game

    is that it ?

anyone recall an injury to a celtic player that kept them out long temm ?

  13. and then this happened –

    Kilmarnock 0 celtic 5.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Our performance level was immense. Everything I want in the team, technique, speed, power, mobility, creativity, it was all there.

“Overall, it was a brilliant team performance and a great way to clinch the title. We wanted to sprint over the line and we went over it really quickly tonight.”

  14. The guy called “Fergie”, Accies fan I think, had a high decibel level, coupled with his passion for limited vocabulary, found him banned from home matches on many occasions…

  15. St. Stiv’s

There’s no scientific evidence to state that more injuries occur on plastic or on grass, however, many a pro has said that their joints feel stiffer after 90 minutes on a hard surface. Anyone with a recurring untreated problem, Like CCV, and to and extent, Craig Gordon, before him were reluctant to be exposed to the surface.

Yes – most of our younger players will have grown up with many hours on artificial turf- they can clearly survive it but can they thrive on it?

I stand by my view that you rarely see the levels of flair and slick passing on artificial surfaces that you do on grass.

Now- games can be boring on either surface but- can you cite a memorable game of classy football on artificial turf? We can point to our 5:0 win at Rugby park but that was a memorable result rather than a memorable game. Most of our time down there has consisted of narrow scrappy wins interspersed with a higher level of dropped points than we experienced on other domestic away games on grass.

I expect we will win tomorrow in an enthralling low scoring game with the result in doubt throughout. The goals scored will come from a deflected shot from outside the box, or an attempted dribble where you get a lucky break of the ball, a long clearance which bounces awkwardly and a defender gets bullied, or a pinball sequence after a set piece where someone gets a toe poke trickler, or a Kilmasonic penalty, of course.

What we won’t see is a 20 plus uninterrupted passing move finished by a precise pass and clean shot. Those are rarer than Rosay beads at Ibrox.

  16. It’s the possibility of the unknown “bounce back” of the ball on artificial surfaces that causes the most problems as far as I’m concerned. Any player anticipating where the balls trajectory “should” go can sometimes be thwarted by the unnatural bounce that occurs on synthetic surfaces causing them to unnaturally turn their knee, ankle or hip when following the ball. Definitely a no no for me…

  17. Firstly let me say that I believe that all top level clubs should have grass pitches.

But what intrigues me is how some who as soon as a Killie away game is in the offing want certain players pulled out(rested)in case of injury.

Let’s take any ten year period with Kilmarnock hosting nineteen games per season – 190 matches. Each visiting club has 20 players ready for action – that’s a grand total of 3800 bodies involved.

How many have actually been injured directly because of the surface at Rugby Park – one, two, three? I don’t know but it must be an infinitesimal number.

Let’s get our strongest out tomorrow, put the game to bed and make changes on the hour. HH
