Expect the manager and team to both be ready

It is time for our seasonal reminder: the first competitive fixture of a new season is statistically more akin to a lottery than a predictable event; in evidence, we have Lincoln Red Imps and Artmedia Bratislav, two teams who won as significant underdogs against Celtic.

Season 2019-20 starts tonight in a field in Bosnia, where local champions, Sarajevo, attempt to record what would be one of the most significant victories in their history.

Neil Lennon has some decisions to make, particularly in defence, where Christopher Jullien and Boli Mbombo could make their debuts, the latter in the absence of Kieran Tierney, who is still recovering from an operation in May.

The heat has relented in Sarajevo and across Europe from the heights recorded last week, so it will be more like a balmy Glasgow evening than an oven for the Celtic players.  Importantly, Neil Lennon has been through a few experiences like this.  He will remember the pain of defeats European competition at the hands of Utrecht (4-0) and Braga (3-0) in his first season in charge of Celtic.

Expect the manager and the team to both be ready this time.

  1. Fool Time Whistle on

Lovely back heeled goal from Sinclair from another great run and cross from Lewis Morgan.

Morgan has been excellent, but gets a grudging compliment after Sinclair Celtic TV love in. He’s naturally left footed but has just delivered three great crosses with his right foot.

    Great goal.

  2. Christie had a great game but for me so did Ajer, Those 2 are my joint men of the match,

  3. Frightening options in attack.

The competition for places is another major positive.

  4. Well done Celtic. Great result.

And as I sit here eating my humble pie. Well played Johnny Hayes.

  5. Solid performance on a very tough pitch. We’ll be even fitter and stronger next week,

  6. Think Mickey J’s goal changed the momentum of the game and it was all in our hands after that.

If they had gone in 1 up at HT it could have been a much more difficult second half.

Good mature overall performance against tough (!) opponents. Same again next week.

  7. Great result. Some customary dodgey moments at the back but comfortable against a better class of opponent than we’re use to at this stage.

Comfortable in the end and should be a formality to go through.

Genuine question, what were the differences in terms of formation and tactics versus ‘Brendan’s team’?

  12. Good display and result. Only slight concern was a slight hesitant display from Bain probably due to unusual defence. I’m sure it will improve as season progresses.

Lewis Morgan could do a good job for us this season…Forrest, Morgan, Shved, Sinclair, Arzani, Johnston….

Pish for 329 minutes then we were fine, these guys were not mugs. Well done the bhoys⚽⚽⚽

  15. Job done, despite losing a slack goal.

Only one side in the tie much as expected, and despite the transfer hysteria, thought Mbombo looked tidy hope his exit was precautionary Ajer was excellent and Bitton played in slippers, as usual. Good performances all round and great to see Ryan Christie fully fit. Look forward to seeing Jullien on Saturday.

Three good goals, and a good work out.

    I’m not a ‘doom moger’’.

That performance was little different from what we saw from ‘Brendan’s team’.

  17. Always nice to win away from home. The only other CL away winners our probable opponents in the next round. This qualifying business is not easy.

  19. I was very impressed tonight.

We have played much worse opponents in much less hostile arenas and lost or drawn.

Lenny put a balanced team out there considering what i first thought.

We looked miles better than that last friendly game and I am now longer forward to the season.

New player Boli looked a great outlet until he went off injured.

    very happy tonight.
