Expensive lesson for football

669

The success rate of Celtic’s player recruitment strategy in recent years has been exceptional; pound-for–pound better than any period in our history.  Forster, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Wilson, Ledley, Wanyama, Commons, Kayal and Hooper have arrived for limited outlay and have propelled the club into the latter stages of the Champions League.

By contrast, Mo Bangura failed to impress on any occasion tested.  At another time it would be easy to write him off but it seems unusual that the current system for scouting and assessing footballers has led to a striker who only yesterday recorded his first goal for the club.

In all honesty I suspect Mo will not get a chance to turn things around at Celtic, there are several strikers ahead of him in the squad and our scouts will forever be working on fresh recruits, but this doesn’t mean he is a bad player.  It’s more likely that his induction into Scottish life missed a crucial step.

Did you see the story and photograph about Michael Johnson yesterday?  The 24-year-old was paid-off by Manchester City near the end of his £40k per week contract.  He was unfortunate with injuries but there is a lesson for football to learn in his demise.

The day anyone, young or old, clever or stupid, signs a £10m contract life can become one long party.  ‘You don’t like my attitude/weight/blood test/friends?  I’m on a multi-million pound contract, deal with it.’ How can football deal with this issue?

For the record, there is absolutely no connection between Mo, whose attitude has been first class, and Michael Johnson’s demise.

Seem to remember from reports at the time that it was John Park who had been to see Bangura on the advice from Larsson.

Think the facts have been changed to suit the MSM’s cause over time.

    Hi Praecepta

Thanks for the input, Its looking then like lenny has spent between 15 and 20 million quid so far on about 25 players.

Its quite a lot of players in 2.5 years but not such a high transfer bill

  6. celtic have done well in the transfer market over the last 2 1/2 years and our team has evolved into something i did not think possible given the limited budget. however, its up to celtic to continue to unearth quality young players year after year. cant help but think NFL’s belief in our scouting department is more significant than anything else. the signing of tom rogic suggests we continue to search the globe for the best young talent we can find.

we have already sold ki for a lot of money and it look like hooper and victor will be next to go. all part of the grand plan (at a guess 25 million in tranasfer fees wthin 1 year), i just hope most of the money raised is used to improve our club i.e. greater investment in our stadium, surrounding area and player recruitment rather than paying out to shareholders.

p.s. looking at managers such as owen coyle and paul lambert etc… i feel NFL should spend as much time with celtic a possible before/ if he ever decides to try the epl, as has previously been reported. everything is set up for him to succeed and it looks like we could be going on a wonderful journey over the next 5 years.

Still think his eye for a player and strike rate in transfers was exceptional.

When he has been interviewed or returned to CP, I always get the impression he had a real affection for the club.

If he could unearth us a Lubo and a Mjalby between now and the end of January, I would genuinely fancy our chances of adding another * on the jersey.

Aye. He’s one helluva’n actor…..except….his directorial debut, ‘Jack Goes Boating’ is dire. He also ‘starred’ in it. Well….everyone makes mistakes. His next one: ‘Ezekiel Moss’, should be a better effort.

However, the film I’m most looking forward to this year is ‘Ender’s Game’, taken fom the sci-fi nivel by Orson Scott Card. Should be brilliant; I just wish I didn’t know the plot!

Celtic are constrained by what is finally decided. The FTT jury i still out and LNS has not decided.

Until either do then any Celtic utterance would be presented as stirring the pot by a media only too ready to put focus on us and not them.

However supporters are not so constrained and I’d keep an eye on TSFM as a vehicle for taking all supporterr’s views to the SFA via their clubs.
