Experimentation is over, Celtic core ready for Sunday

The learning period and experimentation is over.  Neil Lennon will play a more familiar looking line-up on Sunday, with James Forrest on the right, Ryan Christie in the middle.  Neither are as effective in other positions.

Odsonne Eduard will be given every chance.  He, Boli Bolingoli, Jonny Hayes and Mohamed Elyounoussi have all been allowed to recuperate from various strains in recent weeks.  Even if they all pass fitness tests, due to their common injury type, Neil has to consider the high possibility of a relapse in their first outing.  This could force early substitutions in a game that could go to extra-time.

These permutations make a lottery out of guessing our left flank.  Bolingoli or Hayes at left back, with Elyounoussi or Mikey Johnston at left-mid.  Johnston is back from injury and in sparkling form.  He played a crucial role in the win at Ibrox in September when these two teams last met but Neil Lennon may prefer Elyounoussi to add a greater physical presence.

Jeremie Frimpong will almost certainly get the nod ahead of Moritz Bauer, with Hatem Elhamed still injured (from yet another strain).  The regular core of the side: Kristoffer Ajer, Christopher Jullien, Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Fraser Forster, will all play.

This is not an occasion for an inexperienced winger to play centre forward.  Lewis Morgan is at the very early stages of learning this role, if Eduard is not fit, Leigh Griffiths should start.

Whoever loses on Sunday will leave Hampden knowing they have bigger fish to fry this season, but the victory will make anything and everything seem possible for the winners.

In Celtic’s favour, they have players who have regularly been through challenges like this and come away with the win.  Players like McGregor, Forrest and Brown could write a manual on how to win at Hampden.  We can also expect a match-winning performance from James Forrest.

After recovering from a two-goal deficit against Newco on Wednesday, Aberdeen manager, Derek McInnes, spoke about the aggression his team showed to get back into the game.  On Sunday, both teams will be hyped up and ready for the battle, managing that aggression, however, will be important.  Celtic are clear favourites but a careless red card would change that.

Tom Rogic signed shirt raffle for Celtic FC Foundation

The Celtic squad wore a special shirt for last month’s league game against Motherwell, bearing the Celtic FC Foundation Christmas Appeal logo instead of the normal Dafabet logo on the front, and the words “Christmas Appeal” on the back, instead of the Magners logo.

Tom Rogic’s signed shirt from that day is available for raffle.  Each donation of £10 or more will be entered into a draw, which will take place on Friday 13 December.  The shirt will be posted on Monday 16th (or available for collection at the Hibs game on Sunday 15th).

The Celtic FC Foundation do incredible work throughout the world all year round, but their work with those most in need in the winter months, and for children and families coping with chronic poverty, can give warmth, nourishment, self-respect and  human compassion that some people struggle to find.  All donations go straight to the Foundation.

This is why Celtic exists.  You can enter here at JustGiving.  Good luck and thank you!!

  1. In September we went to Ibrox and set out in a solid shape and with clear tactics with and without the ball. They had no answers. This time they will have Kent and Morelos from the start which will give the more pace and width. It will be interesting to see how we approach the game tactically as i think they will more cautious this time and look to rely on out balls down the channels and into the right hand side for Kent to run in behind.

If Frimpong plays he will need to adjust his starting position and we will need to have cover at rb as Julien isn’t the quickest and that is his side. They will be dangerous from that point of view and from crosses into the box. Ajer has terrific attributes but worries me on one on one situations when balls come into the box. Morelos is adept at exploiting that and getting in between the centre backs. Stopping the crosses will be important.

I believe we have the better players, more identity and fluidity and certainly greater experience, mentality and nous. I would question whether they have the bottle to beat us tomorrow. I think we will win the Cup and don’t want to and cant imagine losing but i don’t think it will be easy. 2-1 us is my guess.

  2. So funny to see thread on FF where they are all arguing over what the dress code should be for hospitality on cup final day.

It’s so long since they really have had those kind of first world problems. This is a big day out for them. Just like newco they are.

It feels like a Gretna cup final type event. Lose it and lose their season and who knows where it all ends.

Well we all know where it ends actually.

Tomorrow is going to be the sweetest of all !

4-0 for me but as always any win will do.

  3. I was at Celtic’s very first League Cup Final in 1956 against Patrick Thistle. We drew 0-0 but won the replay on a Wednesday afternoon kick off 3pm. I couldn’t make the replay because St Luke’s school in the Gorbals demanded that I attend class rather than go to Hampden. We did have a very accommodating teacher n Jimmy Gordon who turned on the class radio to listen to the BBC. Special day.

However not as special as next year when I went along to Hampden with my big brother to the 7-1 final. It lives with me still.

Tomorrow. I have come up from London to take my place at Hampden to support Glasgow Celtic and everything she stands for.

    We will win this cup.

  4. Come on the Hooooops.

Let’s pump the Sevco mañana different club same shite that follows them.

Also waiting on Burton to score against Lincoln for a wee coupon up.

So come on CQN positive thinking please to get Burton to score… Think Burton. Burton . Burton

    Eurie Gella style. 😂🙏

    Hail Hail

    D. :)

  5. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

My natural skepticism aside, I find the idea of Sevco getting compensation if Gerrard leaves pretty unconvincing.

The Gerrard brand was far stronger than Sevco’s when he was appointed. (He was one of number of high profile players a few years younger than Beckham whose brand development they would have tried to imitate).

Giving his earnings and standing as a player I assume he is being managed (career, brand, earnings) by top notch professionals.

Why would his people allow their client to be locked into a contract with release clauses which make it more difficult to leave?

Finally, and perhaps most tellingly, the noise around this only seemed to start after it was revealed that Celtic received £8.8m from Leicester for BR.

Caveat – I have no intel but, IMHO, smells a bit like odouress excrement?

    Hail hail

    Good to see you posting!

Hope you have another special day tomorrow!

    C/MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Ah well coupon grubbed.

Judging from those dates, and by my reckoning, you have been supporting Celtic for pretty much half of our history! Enjoy the trip to the Cup FInal, and those Green and White ribbons!

It is now practically impossible to post on this site.

20 minutes of logons being ignored. Five times, back to square one.

Finally in, try to write something through a barrage of pop-up adverts and a screen that arbitrarily jumps al over the place, then wipes your post. Three times.

I’ve done all the adblocker/switch Java off stuff, which is ridiculous enough to have to do, but tbh Paul, you either want a forum or you don’t.

And if you don’t, then just close it. Because this is the worst of all worlds.

I now can’t even remember the points I wanted to make re tomorrow.

So cheerio and all the best.

  10. Somebody mentioned the weather as being ‘Rainjurz like’, how true this is, we’ll never know since Sevco don’t really have a weather variety unless they bought it, along with the history.

Even the neutrals fear for Celtic, because Seethen Gerrard has been allegedly ‘impressive’, albeit second since he came to Glasgow, this according to the ‘experts’ don’t forget the same experts ,that forecast doom and downsizing for Celtic.

Our impossible to pick side, has gone from strength to strength in Europe and domestically, Neil Lennon has quelled the cynics and doubters, we’re better to watch than this time last season, with zero ego

A Celtic side though posters will try, impossible to pick because its so rich and varied with goalscorers and gift galore, and if we can overcome any mibbery Sevco definitely got included with their brand new football licence in 2012, we are way too good for the new Rainjurz regardless of the weather, in their very first final against the champions.

God Bless Neil Lennon and our Glasgow Celtic CSC

  11. Best of luck to Lenny and his Celtic machine to run smoothly to-morrow at Hampden let’s keep close tabs on Morelos and Ryan Kent. come on the Hoops.

It certainly looks like P67 isn’t really that bothered about the state of the site these days, which is a shame, as it’s easily fixed.

If you let us know what device (phone/laptop) you are using then there are ways of stopping all pop ups and login issues.

  13. Greenbingly, The secret to logging on is log on to page1 post anything like Test & you are then in. Go up to current page & join the conversation.

Shouldn’t be necessary to do that but unfortunately it is.

    Splendid post

    Hail Hail

  17. Still 2 nil, but a City goal now would be interesting

McTominay plays well for Man U, he’s awful for Scotland

  18. United cling on for the win.

I am sure we will be far more comfortable tomorrow.

    My heart says 5-1.

    My head says 4-0.

As part of my personal build up I’ve been listening to SSB the last couple of nights.

Why are the pundits ignoring the Ibrox result earlier. They barely laid a glove on us.

They were all lyrical about the Huns being well on top of Aberdeen at 2-0 up, yet ignoring the fact their second goal was a complete blooper from the keeper.

And of course Cosgrove missed a complete sitter.

The Lennon hammer will fall on them tomorrow.

From my B&W archive, Apr 77. Benburb Juniors FC, Tinto Park in the Govan area of Glasgow. Nothing special about the game but two spectators were (bottom left), Jock Stein and assistant Sean Fallon. Back in the day even big name managers did their own scouting for talent.
