Exploiting a vulnerable man, the drive to Bristol Airport, WW in the UK

611

There is a degree of public interest in reading about, or listening to, spivs exploit the stupidity of some football fans to bring a club to its knees, but the sight of a tired and emotional looking Malcolm Murray stumbling away from an event is neither entertaining nor of interest to anyone with a sense of humanity.

Have you ever seen a drunk football player or official?  I have.  It has never been news before nor should it be now.  If the man has an actual problem the first response from his club and the wider game must be to offer support for one of our national illnesses.

The fan with a phone camera probably knows no better, but passing-round a recording of when a Frankie Howerd impersonator confronted Murray about his alleged problem is truly awful.

The audio was almost certainly not uploaded onto the internet by ‘Howerd’ but it was his decision to make and distribute the recording.  I hope he informed Murray the call was being recorded.

10 years ago today five of us filled a car and drove to Bristol Airport, the nearest available departure point for Scot’s leaving for the Spain; more-local airports were booked out within minutes of the event ahead being confirmed.  Bristol is a small airport but the place was full of other Celtic fans who had travelled south for the same purpose.  Every departure point in the land was filled by green and white.

A remarkable exodus was underway, it was a privilege to be part of it.

Great news, Willie Wallace has made the long trip from Aus and is now in the UK.  Looking forward to catching up with him next week.

I see contributing to Willie’s autobiography has had a dramatic effect on Rod Stewart’s career!  He’s just reached No. 1 in the album chart for the first time in decades.  Hail, hail, Rod.

You can pre-order the autobiography in Willie’s own words, with Rod’s contribution, Brogan Rogan’s best writing yet, and Archie MacPherson’s fantastic scene setting (“the best team I’ve ever seen”) with the link below.  Willie will be signing all copies ordered now just as soon as the presses roll.

Nostalgia overload.  Need to hold it together for tomorrow.

Johnston cost me six pints that day-I bet one of my mates in The Haymarket a pint on the result and a pint per goal margin.

Another five piled into the bet,and I could hardly back down.

By the end of the night,I could hardly stand up!

Thirty pints grudgingly purchased by hurting minihuns, magic…

Take me a week to drink them now, honest.

Smith going would be a giant leap forward in terms of the extinction of the huns, that would leave Sally as the only credible hun season ticket salesman, and his credibility on the back of their form last season has taken a hammering. If we get Smith and Sally both out the door they would have no one to sell the season tickets and we would all be one step closer to Paradise.

  6. A couple of months before the Seville final I was out in town with a pal and we got talking to some Spanish people in a bar. Two of them live in Glasgow, the rest were visiting. Anyway, as the evening wore on they introduced me to their mate Juan, who said in pidgin English that he really wanted to see Celtic. At that time I had two season books so told him I’d take him on the Sunday. I met up with them all in McChuills, we then went to Bairds, had a quick drink and I headed off to the game with Juan while the others stayed in Bairds. The game was pretty flat but Henri scored twice and we beat Killie quite comfortably. When we got back to Bairds his pals were all bloodred. They’d been drinking some mental sherry, or it might have been Buckfast. Anyway, we went our separate ways.

I didn’t get tickets for Seville until about 10 days before the final. By then all the hotels were full everywhere – but we got flights ok. By the next day I thought we’d have to stay miles away in Cordoba or somewhere like that when I thought, why not text wee Juan, see if he knows of anywhere. Straight away he replied that his brother lived in Seville and he’d ask him. The next morning he’d sorted us with a twin room in a wee hotel five minutes walk from the cathedral. Result! Great trip, great memories.

Like Hooper, both of those strikers you mention would score a bundle of goals in the SPL for us.

Unfortunately the price tags for Rhodes (£8m+) and Austin (£6-7m) mean they are way beyond what our club would like to pay.

  8. Sitting at home here in Donegal, just a few miles from my birthplace in Derry, I was listening on Highland Radio to the lovely Moya Rua from Gweedore being interviewed about her life in Glasgow where she worked as a bus conductress in the 50’s.

Moya is a true Celtic supporter and was always a good friend to young Celtic players. I recall Billy McNeill speaking in glowing terms of her when she would frequently have her bus make a diversion to drop young Celtic players off at Barrowfield or Celtic Park.

Moya is a remarkable lady, now in her 80’s and I know she will be fondly remembered by Celtic supporters like myself of lets say….advanced years.

Moya was known as the green lady on the buses, as she always wore her Celtic badge on her lapel and she always wore a Celtic tie with her uniform and always had her nails pained green as well.

Poor Moya was back in Scotland this weekend driving herself around visiting old friends from years gone by, she mentioned on the radio that she had her car damaged by vandals in Johnstone when she stayed overnight with an old friend. She feels this will be her last trip to Scotland and she is a bit down about the damage to her car.

She is presently making her way to the Highlands to see more old friends before going to the cup final on Saturday. Her ticket was given to her by the Lord provost of Glasgows father, a good Gweedore man himself, I believe!

It was a very moving interview and my heart really went out to her, she is donating all her Celtic memorabilia to the local school children in Gweedore, photographs, autographs and scarves to a new generation of Celtic children. She explained that if she died, they would in all probability be burned.

If anyone reading this is so fortunate to meet her before she leaves Scotland, give her a big hug as she is a truly wonderful and inspirational ghirl, one in a million!

Ticketless, I watched the game in a park with 10000 odd Celtic and Porto fans. It was 42C an hour before kick off. With the giant screen facing the setting sun, we couldn’t make out the picture, but for a small strip in shadow at the bottom of the screen….

And there was no riot, unlike Manchester!

Do you remember after we cheered Willie Johnstone’s goal he turned around and bowed at us, we all laughed.

You dont happen to have worked in a council planning dept at some time in your life?

  18. Midnight drive from Blantyre to Manchester airport, plane to Madrid the express train to Seville all on day of final, plenty of celtic fans stuck in Madrid as they hadn’t booked seats on the express.

Left luggage. In a wee bar and went to the match. Slept in train station before heading back on express train next midday.Hotel booked in Madrid and had another night out there. Flight back to Manchester then drive back home..

PASSED as parks bus on m74, those poor souls had driven all the wayback from Seville ..

No,to be honest-I was already heading back to The Haymarket soon as Brian hit his hat-trick.

Glad he scored though, another six might have been my Mr Creosote moment!

  20. TBB, I was in that park also I can remember someone appeared with a portable tv and a guy grabbing a mic and giving us a running commentary of the game

We flew from Glasgow to Amsterdam then on to Madrid where we got the fast train to Seville – what a journey hoops everywhere we went and what a blast that train journey was.

Spent the night sleeping in an oven of a hire car in the train station car park had to get out for a wander around 04:30 and walked into the train station to see a green and white blanket of bodies covering the station concourse

Seville memories : After BBJ did the business at Liverpool, I decided to take a bit of a gamble and booked flights to Malaga for a week with the UEFA Cup final slap bang in the middle. The idea being that if we didn’t make the final, then me and the missus would have a week in Andalucia.

I managed to get bookings at two seperate Seville hotels (just in case) and I “won” an ebay auction for two cup final tickets costing £160 each! We booked hotels for the other days in the beautiful villages of Ronda, Gaucin and Benahavis.

After that it was a case of sitting at home waiting on the result of the Semi against Boavista….we went absolutely nuts when Henke scored in Portugal, knowing that we already had all the necessary arrangements in place!

We flew to Malaga the weekend before the final, picked up a hire car and headed off for two cracking nights in Ronda, an amazing place. The day before the game, we drove to Malaga airport and picked up my mate and his wife, who had managed to blag two tickets for the game. I still had the two hotel rooms booked, so we were sorted.

The drive to Seville was just magic, we passed loads of cars with Hoops scarves and tricolours out the windows. After settling into Seville, we joined the many thousands in the park and got quite plastered. The combination of hangover and 42degC/high humidity meant that I only drank water the next day during the build up to the game, even after we met up with more friends who had flown into Seville that morning!

We even had to go back to the hotel as the wife ended up with heat exhaustion and she got bundled into a cold shower!

After the Tenko type march out to the stadium, I sank to my knees after entering the stadium….I never ever thought I would get to see Celtic in a european final. It was very emotional, even more so when we found our seats and looked along at the massed ranks of the Hoops support.

After the game, we picked up a few cold beers and crashed at our hotel, too worn out for any partying.

The next day we drove back to Malaga airport and dropped off our friends before heading into the hills and the white washed walls of Gaucin. Back into holiday mode, but heads filled with what could have been!

We were really lucky with the gambles we took on tickets/hotels/flights, but it all added up to an incredible week for us and we just felt blessed to be a part of the amazing migration of the Celtic family.

  23. Seville,

6 of us booked a week in the Algarve the day after we beat Liverpool, such was our confidence.

What started out as an attempt to see a match became the trip of a lifetime, an adventure that led to friendships and stories that are still repeated when a few of us get together.

Not to mention the amazing way I obtained the precious tickets for the final, but thats another story.

  24. I watched the game on the screen in the big park and was absolutely in awe of the magical, hypnotic effect of marching Celtic supporters, clad in the hoops, walking back to the city centre over the bridge. It gave the illusion that the whole bridge was “alive”.
