Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

  1. Well , having just listened to wee Gloria Estefan’s Latin Beat on BBCR2 I ‘m afraid I have to say it’s a bit disappointing- not the music, much of which is what you need to warm you up on a cold grey day, but Gloria herself, not one of the world’s natural broadcasters.

Or the script she was given wasn’t good enough.

Anyways, she can’t be good at everything.

  2. Ernie Lynch, ever read the Guns of August? It’s worth a read. Can’t dispute that young officers died in droves also but the vast majority of those killed came from working class towns all over the UK.

This also relates to the fact that we assign value to lives ie, one Brit is greater in value than an Afghani. We are vilified if we do not mourn British soldiers killed on active (and paid) duty in say, Iraq but forget about any Iraqi (?) civilian that he may have killed or maimed. I believe that it might be more fitting to donate to a charity who help innocent victims of war (which could include conscripts).

    Well, we have arrived.

Get your Poppy on your chest.

The bigger the Poppy, the more you will be respecting the miserable sods who died in the mud & slime for God knows what

Glorifying mass slaughter shows your respect for the dead.

Are we too thick to understand this simple message ?

  7. Well done FIFA. For all its faults it is at least standing up to England’s demand for special rights in the name of poppy fascism. They already force every foreigner in the country to join in the mad conformist ritual that starts more than 2 weeks before Remembrance Sunday.

Posh Dave is of course appalled. This is the sensitive fellow who insisted on wearing his poppy in China despite its obvious connotations of the Opium War, when Britain butchered tens of thousands of Chinese in the name of “free trade”.

How long before it will be an offence not to wear a poppy from mid-October?

  9. gorbalstam – This also relates to the fact that we assign value to lives ie, one Brit is greater in value than an Afghani

    This is normal human behaviour.

Mothers assign more value to the lives of their children than they do to those of strangers.

We value our own wives and siblings more than we do people we’ve never met.

I’m sure the same goes for Afghans.

However, a lot of generous people in the UK donate money to charities that operate in Afghanistan and other benighted places, so it’s not as if remembering your own country’s war dead and being charitable to foreigners are mutually exclusive. (thumbsup)

    10. Because, with the addition of the imposed retrospective punishment re elbowing Hunfermline player, he will have breached the 18pts for two consecutive seasons mark = severe punishment for subsequent season (2012/13)?

  11. Voguepunter – don’t know why he changed his name but he was supposed to have got the name `Darin’ from an old chinese restaurant that got burned down `the Mandarin’, whereby the first coupla letters got lost!

Either that or it was taken from a phone book.

    I prefer the first explanation.

  13. Does anyone else not feel it is a disgrace the way the poppy has been turned into a fashion accessory by the celebs?

I saw a bit of X-factor at the weekend and they had shiny almost brooch like poppies and one of the women had one in her hair. That is not right.

I used to wear a poppy as a kid to respect the dead but on my blazer not behind my ear or anywhere else.

It’s not even respectful anymore it’s being used in the wrong way. People don’t attend services or pay respects they just wear a poppy for weeks and think they are saints.

It’s time to use the white poppy to remember all the dead and for peace.

Well going by that argument, all the soldiers killed in any conflict are strangers to me, so….

I was making a point about donating to charities who helped innocent victims of war (including conscripts) and those who are paid to peratrate it. Nothing in my post suggests that the war dead should not be remembered. However I will not draw a distinction because of nationality.

  16. Good to hear that Hoops Hit-man Mo Bangura is back in training.

Let’s hope he bangs in a good number of goals for us before his big dream move to the EPL next summer.

If the dream move doesn’t come off I hear that ex-Celt Gerry Butler has offered Mo a role as his ‘body double’.

“Did Bobby Moore ever wear a poppy on his football shirt?”

No. Neither did any of the England squad who 10 years ago, tomorrow, played in a friendly at home to Sweden.

We all remember the outcry at the time from the media, the Government of the day and Billy Bozo and his lynching party because England were not allowed to wear a poppy on their kit for that match.

In the 21 st Century version the two lovers[ played by Johnny and Miss S.Johansen] flee for their lives from flesh eating zombies.

10 Questions that have no answer at the moment (batch #1)

Have HMRC been involved with any talks , premature proposals with regards a Newco hun being parachuted into the SPL ?

Doubtful. Not if they are serous of making an example of the huns

How would HMRC, Banks, UEFA and the ECA react to Newco hun being parachuted into the SPL ?

What a precedent that would set

How can Newco hun trade without being issued by a VAT number by a satisfied HMRC ?

    It’s doubtful if they can

Why is Hugh Dallas still employed as a referee observer by UEFA ?

Because of the terms of his settlement with the SFA

Why were the huns afforded a European license ?

Because someone lied or acted in a misleading way

Why has it taken over a year for Steven Cravens appeal to be held by the SFA ?

They delayed things as long as they possibly could

Why is the Scottish media so compliant with Old huns ?

Why has Sir David Murray been removed from Old huns imminent financial meltdown ?

Because him and the Black Horse done a deal with Craig Whyte

How did Craig Whyte manage to pass the fit and proper persons test ?

Because no such scrutiny was applied….contrary to any expected fit or proper business practice

Why has Steven Naismith not been sited for his abhorrent tackle at Pittodrie recently

Due to him being crocked for ever and a day any penalty would have been wasted (unofficial answer)

    Hail Hail

  30. Mearns2milton –

I was trying to make that point in my earlier post. Our income from SKY will be signficantly less than that from entry into the Champions League. We would still need to negotiate qualifiers against top teams like Malmo though after winning a hun-free league.
