Extra week training in July has huge impact

2173

I was concerned about a trip to Estonia after hearing Hearts struggle in their home leg against Estonian opponents last week, so news that Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps beat Flora Tallinn was welcome, although the concern was tempered as news arrived that Hearts were three goals up in the away leg.

The lesson here is that in July, one more week’s training has a huge impact on performance.

Brendan Rodgers will be happy with how training has progressed thus far, but it’s only when players put multiple 90 minutes under their belts that they are ready for competitive action. There’s not necessarily a great deal of work to do to overcome Red Imps (no offence intended), but qualifiers come thick and fast thereafter. Despite beating Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana yesterday, I expect Celtic will be more motivated for Saturday’s game against Maribor.

It gets serious from now onwards.

Nearly 4 hours of non stop individual effort with nowhere to hide , Andy Murray will soon compete again in his quest to win Wimbledon. I don’t pretend to have played tennis or to be a font of knowledge in the sport, but Imo he must be in with a shout of becoming the greatest ever sports- person from these Islands.

Thanks for the “heads up” re announcement of updates on Res 12. I eagerly await it but, whatever the outcome, I can only echo the praise and respect stated by many posters earlier in this article.

I did post yesterday – doh, in the previous article, but after P67 had initiated the present one, Homer is me- tha t I would have recommended no advance notice to avoid such little “coincidences” as cyber attacks, SMSM rushing out spoiler news stories but hey ho.

    SFTB

    i disagree completely.

The enormous possession advantage is a red herring.

Germany were in the semi due to penalties after another possession dominated game without purpose.

Not sure you are disagreeing in this post. Certainly not with my argument as you concede the point later on. No one, as far as I can see, is arguing that possession (enormous or otherwise) is an advantage in itself. It is as erroneous an argument as is saying players or coaches want “possession without purpose” It is just an outcome- thwarted purpose of possession- not an aim in itself.

The difference is moving the ball into positive zones to create chances,

Germany failed in the last two games to create enough chances.

The modern footballer can keep very good stats by simply taking the no risk pass option of sideways or back.To many have now been conditioned to do such.

There was no great difference tonight, apart from the opening 10 minutes, in any team carving out clear cut chances. 6 shots to 5 do not support that point. The many scrambles in the box at either end do not support the narrative that France contained Germany to no threat. The many chances missed by Thomas Mueller alone in this tournament belies the argument that they lacked intention to create in the threatening areas or that they were frightened to create. You saw the same first half as I did. Till the brain-fart penalty, Germany were very short odds on to score next.

I accept that the modern footballer strives to keep possession as much as possible especially when they are in their own half but no team in history was ever sanguine about losing possession in those areas. Victorian teams would castigate defenders who lost possession while trying to dribble out of defence.

I have never said Low,Guardiola or any other coach planned for possession without purpose. But their obsession with ball retention has players unwilling to take any pass thats less than certain to retain ball. This has lead to systems that take to long to deliver ball to vital areas.

The time taken move the ball forward allows every half decent team to set defensively.

You used the phrase “possession without purpose” and you gave an example in Guardiola as a coach who has been found out. But Pep’s game was never ever about fetishing possession (Gordon Strachan would be a better example but even he would draw the line at purposeless possession). Pep preached winning the ball back quickly. He played a lot of slighter nippier players to complement that philosophy. Therefore crosses into the box were kept to a minimum whereas MON’s teams were very willing to use this and profit from it. But both attacking approaches had a purpose. MON liked to batter a defence until it weakened and Pep liked to stretch them until they broke or got tired, Both had a purpose. He has not really suffered much of a dearth of titles during his time at Bayern not have they struggled to create chances.

The diagonal ball is a higher risk pass and is almost obsolete in the modern game due to these fear driven coaching systems.

Conte and Italy gave a masterclass on how to beat it against Spain who dominated world football for years until people figured out how to negate.

France understood simply that Germany could have the ball without any great threat tonight.

They have a genius in Griezmann who creates and makes space so would always feel their chance would come.

The diagonal ball is so far from obsolete that I can guarantee you will see several in the final. I counted many tonight from both France and Germany.

You overestimate greatly France’s confidence from minute 10 to minute 45. They were rattled and were shouting at each other as Germany were dominating them and likely to break through. Then came Schweinsteiger and the pattern changed. Germany’s 2nd half possession was more hurried and more adventurous but, contrary to your hypothesis, much less threatening and, according to the scoreline, just as ineffective. Germany did not play with the same cool calculating slow possession in both halves. The first goal changed the game. France recovered their confidence and the second goal came early enough to create desperation in Germany. Whatever team you saw playing slow build up in the 2nd half, it was not Germany.

France have a very good player in Griezman (and, on their day, Payet and Pogba too) but Germany have Ozil who is rated just as high and Draxler & Gotze are both very different from the highly efficient but regimented stereotypical German midfielder like Sammer Ballack, Hamman or Effenberg.

The result tonight fell France’s way. The Germans have, by far, the better head-to-head results between the two teams, despite the stereotypical view that they are all Kraftwerk, Vorschprung Deutsh Technik. machine players while the French are Gallic flair with a beret, Gauloise and an insouciant expression.

You cannot prove a hypothesis on one atypical result.
