Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

SYDNEYTIM SAYS SACK LAWELL NOW on 23RD JUNE 2016 10:41 AM

    Hey,Syd.

” Cheers ” for the first hun game ?

    I`m sorted with the logistics.

    :-)

  2. thought the officials were dreadful last night. It was like the Juve game all over again. At one corner the game is clearly stopped by the offical beside the goals as he sees Long getting clattered around the head yet doesnt call a foul. I thought that was as blatant as the elbow into McCleans back.

Thats 2 games in a row where the refs decisions were questionable. Dont feel too confident about fair application of the rules against the host nation

    Maybe Im just paranoid

  3. McGeady, back not for me,he like others have moved on to other clubs, that’s fine by me,same as Lennon been at Celtic left,so we will just leave it at that,as for McGeady I remember, this supporter who I speak to outside the ground ,before the game, when McGeady was mentioned he always said he was a one trick pony,he didn’t rate McGeady at all,and another thing plenty of Celtic supporters saying they would like to see James McCarthy, play for us,nope not good enough for Celtic,Liam Henderson any day.

  4. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Well done Ireland. A great result.

A crack at Les Bleus now, and a chance to right a big historical wrong.

Remember revenge is a dish best served as a resounding doing.

Will be interesting to see Terry Henry’s comments if he is a studio guest.

All the “home” nations through to the next round. Makes it even more galling that WGS and Scotland blew their qualification.

  5. Hunderbirds are Gone on

I just don’t know with McGeady. When he first came on the scene I had high hopes for him. Fantastic ability to screw defenders in to the ground and go past them.

It just seemed like he never progressed, or was able to learn that bit of guile and cuteness (Copyright KevJungle) that experience normally brings, and makes players like him more effective.

Perhaps Brendan is the man to make that happen. For McGeady his next move will be his last chance to have a great career, rather than just a career.

“I find it amazing that there is a revolution going on at celtic park yet paul67 hardly mentions it

Pete lawwel has been moved aside ”

Where is the evidence of the revolution?

Here are some direct quotes from Brendan:-

““I would hope to do business before the first Champions League qualifier and the club have been brilliant. I’ve spoken about a couple of targets and Peter [Lawwell] and Dermot [Desmond] have been great in trying to progress those.”

“I work with a small group of players but I have to respect that there are players on a contract. That process started a few weeks back and that will continue. I have a way I want to work but it takes time.”

Both these quotes suggest evolution not revolution and they state clearly that Peter Lawwell remains involved in transfer and contract negotiations. In fact, brendan has stated that it is the club (presumably PL) and not he (Rodgers) who is conducting the ongoing Mulgrew talks.

What were your thoughts on Apres Match :)

    ******

    A bit of a curate’s egg.

I normally enjoy their stuff, but I thought their piece on TV3 was poor.

Their shtick is to parody the characters, but I thought they aimed to belittle the production, portraying it as amateurish ans twee.

Whatever way they choose to parody the presenter, he certainly doesn’t come across like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

    Then again, I’m maybe a wee bit biased! : > )

    What did you think?

  8. jmtim..

    Fair enough mate.

To evenconsider vb is laughable.honestly.a joke.

True tho if lookin his back catalogue, youll find evidence of Charles green doin tours of ‘social’ clubs fundraising

JJ sometimes shows insight which makes me think hes an oldold skool hun or a meejabetty’ wi a gripe against king

Either way I will take the Celtic :-)

I could never understand why no manager, in his senior career, has used Aiden as a Number 10.

That is his natural position, I think.

There must be a football reason why he has no been developed in that position.

He can see a pass when the game is in front of him and can go left or right.

However, I think the moment has passed for him returning to Celtic.

Bertie has never changed, mate. He’s always been proud to be a Celtic man. Proud to have worn the shirt. Proud to have achieved so much.

Legend is a big word. Bertie is all of that.

Way back in the day when Eastercraigs sent their young (!) coaches down to Largs for the two week coaching course, my mate and I were walking up the hill from the station when a big jag stopped and wee Bertie quips “Bet I know where you lads are going to”. For the next fortnight Bertie was a star, at every level, and as you say Bobby he never changed from being an ordinary guy.

Great help that week btw, a master at work. It was funny seeing him getting ‘coached’ by guys that were no where near him in experience.

No not paranoia. first half alone the republic had 4 penalty shouts, 2 that the officials could not have and did not “miss”!. E.G. holding someone in a headlock for the entire duration of a corner kick. Justice was done……….this time:).

Better a lucky General, than a good one, and MON has proven it yet again.

Despite losing 4 points from 6 to Scotland, his team got into the play offs for the tourney by virtue of beating Germany in the final qualifying match, Germany already having qualified; a 1-0 win achieved with just 28% possession.

MON’s luck runs on in the tourney proper: with only 1 point from 2 matches, his team meet Italy in the final match, who like the Germans previously, had already qualified. Italy’s coach makes 8 changes, has the majority of possession, but MON’s team wins 1-0 to progress.

His team now meets a France team sans the hand of Henry. How lucky can you get?

  13. Word in football circles that a current Scottish internationalist has been offered a deal at sevco.

No surprise at that. But. Guy is on a fair wage where he is just now.

The deal offered is £20,000 a week with a further £20,000 a week paid “some other way”.

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

Bloody marvellous to see a reference to Peter Lawwell which doesn`t mention a heated driveway.

Perhaps Peter is actually………..shock………horror…….earning his corn.

    Well,of course he is.

That`s why he`s still in the job.

  15. The pain of the night against Poland with the a 2-2 draw, gained by Poland with one of the scrappyist goals you will ever see, while Ireland were hanging on against the Germans meant that I have only had a passing interest in these euros.

I’ve watched some games. While I have reservations about the whole 3Rd place qualifying I look at the results by the “home nations”

Wales are by far the best of the rest behind England. ROI and Norn Iron play to their strengths.

Scotland took 4 points from ROI but in truth I canny for the life of me see us doing what ROI have done or even what Norn iron managed to do.

We’re not as good as Wales so that’s accepted.

  16. Well done Ireland, Great gritty performance, against the odds and the officials they got a result.

As for Alden, I’don’t like to see him back but I said some time ago Aiden’s issue is his final ball. Why a player of his ability, playing under many coaches has not been able to improve this is beyond me but we saw it again last evening.

Whether it’s a pass, a cross or a shot, for me too many of Aiden’s final balls are below par, Great player besides and I still enjoy watching him.

    Hail Hail

  17. Ha! Ha! It just goes to show that you should never post whilst feeling tired and emotional.

Looking back at my efforts last night, I called Calton Tongues, Dalton Tongues and then apologised for my error and called him Carlton Tongues! I’m sure you understood CT (see what I did there? – in case I made another bollocks of it :-)) ).

I also said that I’d watched James McClean in 20 or 12 games. What was that all about? Should have read 10 or 12 games.

    Well done The Republic!

Thought it a bit of craic to be honest. I know you might have a wee bias but I think he got it easy compared to the rest.

It would be interesting to see the viewing figures. Its a hard job selling a program that nobody has any interest in. Think thats what the Apres crew were playing on.

  19. 36 point turnaround in one season up against financially doped-up cheats. . . Jammy bastard!

Celtic’s first treble in 32 years, up against financially doped-up cheats. . . Jammy bastard!

Celtic’s first European final in 33 years. . . Jammy bastard!

Ireland beating the World Cup holders 2-1 on aggregate over 2 legs. . . bored wi’ that.

  20. Great to see Ireland through to thew next round. Leaped out of my seat with a yell at the goal. When I settled down and heard that Ireland would play France, I thought of a house in Paris which would soon be divided in loyalties. My cousin lives just on the fringe of the city and earlier this year I visited her along with cousins from Cork, Dublin, New York and Luxembourg for the France – Ireland rugby game.

My cousin, Niamh, and her eldest son wore Irish jerseys, her husband ( a Frenchman) and second son wore French jerseys and the youngest child, a girl wore a French top but had an Irish top under it. So I guess it will be the same set up this time. Though I hope the result will be in favour of Ireland on this occasion.

  21. scotbrownsbhoys on

Possesion Italy 52 ROI 48, yeah Ireland under seige and scoring against the run of play.

Do you think Scotland in the same position would have won that game? Of course they wouldn’t.
