Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

  1. Frustrating as ****, between that penalty and the fact that their defenders are getting away with their usual holding and grappling at set pieces

  2. Half Time. We had the better of the first half should have had 2 penalties, if we can keep this going we are in with a real chance. You have to ask why didn’t we play like this against Belgium, might still have got hammered but I’d rather see them go down fighting then playing the pish that went on last day.

I said to my nephew Sean on Saturday that refs are not going to allow Ireland to win and it’s obvious tonight again

The gorgeous one said ref got a message in earpiece immediately after

Obviously not advising a penalty !!!!

I swear I’ve never seen a clearer penalty

Ref looking as dodgy as fek shifty bassa

  5. Think the ref got a shout straight away that he’d made a howler, finger went to his ear and his face said it all. Keep the pressure on in 2nd half and he’ll give the next one.

Auldhied. Many happy returns. Hope you’ve had a good day.

Ireland being more positive tonight. Good to see. The challenge in the box was a penalty every day of the week. Wrong side of the ball and player. Referee bottled it.

    Hi everyone,

I’m a bit of a longterm lurker and never normally post anything here but I thought some of you guys might be interested in coming along to an event I’m running. It’s an event looking at sport and digital. Completely free to attend and we’ve got a couple of interesting speakers from Fanduel and QTV Sports. We might have a couple of other speakers in addition to this, so it should be a good evening. Everyone is welcome! We’ll be in the basement of Blackfriars from 18:30 next Thursday. Good we excuse for a beer to talk sport and digital…we’ll be finished for 8 if you’re watching the quarter final that night.

  9. Blantyretim, not sure I get that one. Irelands fans are a massive plus to the tournament and Italy already qualified.

    Keep the faith.

Itv now talking about celtic juve game same cr@p grappling and off the ball at set pieces

  11. ROI are certainly holding their own. Great fighting spirit. The denied penalty was a disgrace. Hope that person has cramp in his sleep all night. And heartburn. With nightmares of the devil coming to take him to hell. And crabs. Itchy ones.

And Celtic fans. Are best in CL according to all the top players who have been to Celtic park

Does it stop decisions going to top clubs?

  13. Normal Italian fitba with diving, holding, wrestling, acting etc. No change there. Spineless ref as well.

The manhandling by the Italians is quite something to behold, isn’t it?How are,and can, they get away with that? It’s as shocking as it is unsurprising.

And the only thing that’s more of a joke than Ireland not getting a penalty is Webb’s stupefying justification of the decision.Boll and ocks.

Hopefully Ireland get the rub this half.

    COYBIG

  15. Our game depends on pace & aggression. If the pace slows which is very likely the Italians will gain the ascendancy. We need a goal soon.

  16. BT, top clubs get favoured for sure, just don’t understand why you think ‘refs won’t let Ireland win’. when Italy have already qualified. Their fans bring so much to the tournament I would think Uefa would want the opposite.

Anyways I hope they keep the pressure on as they are due a decision or two.

UEFA don’t give a peking duck about the football, the atmosphere or the fans as long as the bigger teams in every tournament go further and the gravy train continues to rumble on..

Frustrating as ****, between that penalty and the fact that their defenders are getting away with their usual holding and grappling at set pieces

    UTLR,

Remember who the Italian manager is – Conte was the clown who brought his cheating barstewards from Juventus to Celtic park to pull, push, claw, fall down and all aided by weak refereeing!

  19. Starry, I get that honestly I do, but Italy have already qualified top of the group. They can’t go through twice.

  20. Ireland suffer inexplicable refereeing decisions, much like Celtic.

The hand of Henri. Now the Italian job. What exactly does the guy behind the goal contribute? Shocking.

  21. Just a wee bit o’ luck an’ the GOOD guys might just do it……….

I said that I mentioned to my nephew on Saturday

At the time of the assault by 2 Belgium players Ireland had 1 point more than them

Had the penalty been given Ireland could have been on to a different situation

I stand by my point re European cheats akin to CL decisions

    As u say

  23. BB, correct, one bit of luck might be all that is needed. The effort is there for sure.
