FA Prem goes international below Uefa radar

793

The existence of the Premier League International Cup, a tournament for under-21s, which the FA Premier League launched this is a fascinating development.  It’s a toe in the water for the Premier League who are running a multi-nation tournament out-with the auspices of Uefa.  A consequence of excluding the European governing body is that all games must be played in the territory of England and Wales, despite Celtic and seven others of the 16 teams residing outside that region.

Uefa retain exclusive rights to hold tournaments across multiple territories, although this definition accommodates the existence of the Welsh FA and Welsh teams participation in competitions run by the English FA.

The Premier League has a broken business model which they have been unable to resolve for a decade of more, as they hae studiously avoided growth in their key TV revenue stream stalling.  When it does, innovative solutions will be required.

As far as Celtic are concerned, I’m delighted we’re there.  In the absence of NextGen this will be a valuable addition to the youth players’ development this season.

Foundation News:

I’m up for the Zip Slide from the top of the Jock Stein Stand to pitch level in front of the Lisbon Lions’.  Never done anything as ridiculous in my life but it’s a one-off opportunity for a fee of £30 plus a commitment to raise £125 for the Foundation.

Pile in here, if you’re brave enough for the Celtic Park pitch…………

Not had more than a glance at the annual report yet. Statements dated 12 September? Hmmm.

  1. We were never particularly pretty under Lenny or WGS but were were consistent. We can recall disasters for both because it was a relatively exceptional occurrence. RD is making inconsistency our new hallmark. I reckon we will be a big hit or a big Miss week to week.

So it wouldn’t surprise me if we hammered Ross County. However until we get consistent performance and wins .. I will remain entirely unconvinced.. We need 6 wins on the trot now.

Just before I hit the cot, wtf is happening to our club? We discussed this earlier this week and will continue tomorrow. How long is this farce going to continue? I see no sign the the senior management will make any kind of decision until the league is out of reach, which is a possibility. That is the revolution the anti-board members are awaiting. LAWWELL IS DESTROYING CELTIC. See ya :-))))

Have to say, and I am not hung up on Peter Lawells basic salary,

    but,

in current climate etc, to be on a 100% of salary bonus for achieving limited KPI’s or KDI’s is absolutely outrageous

Yes I know he has only achieved 76% of this, but the target is 100% and this would double his basic

    Frightening in my view

I found myself with a couple of hours to spare in Belfast one drunken morning during the troubles.

I had a rather large ruck sack on me and i fancied going for a walk but didn’t fancy carrying the rucksack around with me. So I walked into Central Station and approached a big NIR guard.

” Excuse me!” says I ” But could you tell me where the left luggage is?”

The big guard looked down on me like Fatty Arbuckle eyeing up a rather unappetising sandwich and with a mixture of disgust and impatience he said ” THIS is BEL-FAAAST!”

” There IS NO Fecking Left Luggage here…… SON! Are yee Stupit?”

I didn’t bother answering him because I saw his point to be fair.

  9. When our team ran out against Legia , it was another gamble from PL, this time instead of not investing enough , he never invested anything in our squad ( knowing that releasing any of Vics cash from previous year could harm his own income ). We now know the reason for this as he has reached his max bonus

This man must be booted out our club

Our whole transfer policy is around PL own personal income

Hi kiddo, you are so right, my love of Celtic knows no bounds. They are a way of life in this household. I just detest what I am witnessing at the moment. I just feel we are being dragged down into the gutter with this “guys” ideals. Why can’t we get back to the Celtic way? The only way we will achieve that will be to get a Celtic Way mhan back in charge. I do not mean JC incidentally. ;-))) IMHO.

I should add that I think PLs wage (and maybe others) is excessive given the size of the company. However, people that I assume know what they’re doing obviously feel he’s worth the money. He doesn’t set his own wage.

    —————————————————————————————————–

He does effectively as his pals sit on the renumeration committee. The boardrooms of the UK are populated by the corporate equivalent of the old boys network where CEOs receive massive pay increases even when their businesses are doing badly. Only the other day it was reported that the pay of the top CEOs in the UK was 143 times that of the average salary on the shop floor. In Norway, the ratio is closer to 60:1. Lawwell is no different from the rest of corporate suits in Britain with his big snout in the trough whilst the ordinary workers get stiffed year in, year out.

Always remember a Cork guy winding me up on Hols about how much he loved Rangers and what they meant to him and what a great Club they were. Finally just before I threw a punch, he said you know I’m talking about Ringmahon Rangers, that’s a Junior Club in Cork which this guy had played for. The same guy told me later when I had calmed down that he had got a trial for Celtic as a schoolboy, I checked it out when I got home and found he was telling the truth.

BMCUW, I am just too young too remember Alfie. I’d be interested to hear from the guys on here what the reaction was to Alfie signing for us. I bet the deidco fans gave him a hard time. He must have been that era’s version of McGeady.

I’m pretty sure Corkcelt isn’t a hun too. But he could’ve been ☺.

    …………………………………..

Reaction was pretty mixed to be honest. Some fans dead against it but others had a more open mind on the matter. We all knew that it would upset the Hun support greatly. He won everyone over with his display at Ibrox when we drew 2-2. He hit a rasper from 30 yards that hit the inside of a post and came back out.

Remember he was one of their heroes, scoring against us in their 3-2 Cup Final win and being a member of their ECWC team. They hated him for signing for us, belting out “Alfie’s a barrel …………….. of s&@!e” at all their games. Our support responded woth a witty little ditty, “he used to be a Hun but he’s all right now, Alfie, Alfie Conn.” What I would say is this, he was a good player but he was no Mo Johnson.

What meritorious thing was PLs bonus for?

    Indeed,but not with a long-term strategy.

No business with a view to the future alienates its core customer base. Nor does it reduce quality to a level where sales fall through the floor.

Mainly because it costs so much to rectify these things. Look at Tesco, for instance, who have done precisely that.

Or Philips, who, about 30 years ago, reduced their quality so much their hi-fis were comparable with Amstrad.

Plenty of other examples. Mainly consigned to the dustbin of history.

  30. Margaret. PL main KPI ‘s are for zero debt His KPI’s are weighted like all bonus. Cash in the bank has the biggest weight against it

So eg we have 5m in the bank but we have no goal scorer.

    Do we

    A. Pay 5m for goal scorer plus wages to bring CL to paradise

    B. Keep the money in the bank and add an extra 100 k to PL bonus

Well our club is being run to point B
