There are a few irrefutable facts concerning the appointment of Celtic’s permanent manager. The most obvious is that recent assertions in the media are contradictory and therefore cannot all be true. The same people who brought you, “Martin will be appointed tomorrow”, also brought you “Robbie will be interviewed tonight”.
The second obvious fact is that Celtic are doing their business without keeping the media in the loop. No one is getting the tip-off on what’s going on, not a single scribe. The result of this will not be a discussion on the finer points of Celtic’s glorious double win, there are only so many days that sells. Speculation sells better than anything in the business, be it players or managers, and we are in peak Speculation Season right now. If you are in the news business and you are not selling Speculation, take a good look at yourself!
Beyond these obvious truths, the everyday process of recruitment continues. Agents will have been pitching to Celtic since the day Wilfried wilted. Celtic (should) build relationships with agents, and I know for a fact that they have interviewed managerial candidates in the past as a courtesy to the agent. That does not mean they were seriously considered.
Leaks also happen, but try picking the genuine ones from the fakes and you are a better man than me. Information can leak, only for it to quickly become bad information. Davie Provan once reported live on radio that Martin O’Neill had agreed to leave Celtic for Leeds United. It didn’t happen, Provan was on the receiving end of a barrage of abuse from Celtic fans, upset at his undermining the club during a crucial season (2002-03). Years later, we learned Provan was right, but Martin changed his mind.
There are human practicalities as well. The only thing Martin was clear about at the end of the season, was that he was unclear on whether or not he wanted the job. If he has been offered the job (hmmmm), is he entitled to consider the prospect over a holiday? Dermot Dermond gave him 10 minutes to consider the interim position in October, the situation is considerably different now.
You know as much as I do, and we both know as much as anyone else who is reporting on the subject. The third irrefutable fact is that tomorrow is another news cycle and there will be news on the Celtic manager, even if there is no news. You can bank on it. Forgive me if I roll my eyes.

That reference to the ‘Chelsea Potter’ was fake news, though it is still open to be fair, might have been a favourite haunt of George Best when he lived just off the ol’ Kings Road. No the establishment I should have referred to was the ‘Chelsea Drugstore’ mentioned en passant in the Stones ‘Let It Bleed’ album back in the 60s, when Mick didn’t have to dye his hair. Last time I was in it it was jam packed full of NF skinheads, otherwise known as Chelsea supporters, but did have an interesting history, again from the late 60s, and was not only a bar, but had a record shop, and a local chemist so to speak. Also featured in Kubrick’s ‘Clockwork Orange’. I don’t want this to sound like a lesson in governance, as we do actually agree on what it all means, but… your statement is patently untrue. As a significant minor shareholder, he may be considered “an owner” not “THE owner”. This is a really important distinction, that all shareholders need to be clear on, as their individual voting rights could matter in a future where the TCT, CSL and CSTA, build voting blocks that may more effectively aggregate and represent fan interests. Minority shareholders (of any size) do not have the right to manage daily operations, hire/fire employees, or make executive decisions. Their power is exclusively through the voting rights afforded by their shareholding, which includes the appointment of the Board of Directors, who then run the company.
The reason that DD is often considered the defacto “owner” is because he has the most significant minor shareholding at 34.7%, which always votes, AND it seems obvious that he either has indirect control or influence over other significant shareholding (to the extent legally permitted in the operation of an AIM listing), causing them to vote with him either in deference or because their collective interests are aligned.
When many small shareholdings do not even vote, it is very easy for DD and his like-minded investors to reach the required voting thresholds for all corporate actions. Critically, under UK company law, a 5% shareholding (or voting block) is afforded specific statutory rights, which permits them to formally challenge the board on presentation of resolutions and voting matters, so ensuring greater transparency for a Plc.
In practical terms, and DD is not even hiding this, he effectively treats the club as if he owns it, which further suggests the other significant minority shareholders are acceptant/supportive of this. This is how he continues to exert control despite not attending board meetings, inserts junior as his proxy, uses the corporate platform to publicize his views on weighty matters, oversees or significantly influences the process of making key appointments, and apparently defines the club’s ambition, or lack thereof.
I genuinely don’t even know what DD wants from his shareholding in Celtic. It is most definitely not about the financial return, because he has significant amounts of other capital which has performed much better in the last 30-years.
PS. Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics (which is often shortened to math), though the popular expression for conveying the merits of a point based in mathematical fact is “do the math”, not “do the arithmetic”.

Most probably because nobody outside Celtic which includes Rangers bloggers did more to derail Resolution 12 than David Low, making false representations privately (that got reported back by a CST and Res12 contributor) . DL was Chair at the time of a meeting that decided not to support Res 12 where a new proposal from Res12 shareholders was again seriously misrepresented, and DL refused from early days to get behind it when doing so would be a popular move for himself on the surface.
All very puzzling until a business partner relationship reason with someone at Rangers emerged that explained everything.
Apart from that the WH ST Alliance is more likely to recreate a viable independent ” Shadow Board” with more teeth and sooner than the DL’s CSL will.
