Failed Rangers board want control again

296

With genuine news stories on Rangers breaking several times a day, recriminations for past failures have understandably taken a backseat to current events, although Sir David Murray and Our Hero have experienced a taster of what is to come.

When the buzz of excitement dies down people will start to ask, ‘Whose fault is this awful mess?’  Board-level management at most public companies includes both executive and non-executive directors.  The executives, commonly: chief executive, financial director, and others depending on industry, such as: commercial, technical, HR, run the business on a day-to-day basis.  Non-executives are there to ensure the business is on the right course and to act as guardians of shareholders’ interests.

Wikipedia gives a useful summary for non-executive responsibility, specifically for: strategy, performance, risk and people.

Risk is the word I would like to draw your attention to here.  Wikipedia suggests:

“Non-executive directors should satisfy themselves that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible”.

Former Rangers non-executive director, Paul Murray, didn’t have any responsibility for team matters.  He wasn’t the man charged with preparing accounts.  Health and Safety were not his remit.  Paul Murray’s duty was to ensure that financial information was accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management were robust and defensible.

Risk management!  This is the guy who yesterday told the media he was keen to setup a rival bid for Rangers.  Good grief!  It was his job to ask questions of the financial arrangements at the club which other shareholders were unable to ask.  He was there to dig deeply enough into these matters to satisfy himself that the executive directors of the club were dealing with financial matters appropriately.

Whether they win the First Tier Tribunal or not, Rangers have already paid a heavy price for this tax issue, responsibility for which rests squarely on the shoulders of the non-executives who enjoyed the prestige of being a Rangers director (I know) but failed to carry out their duties to a standard that protected the club from meltdown.

Give him the job!

  1. In case any Scottish Ministers (eg Shona Robison, Nicola) other MSPs or MPs (Margaret Curran) might be reading – your duty in this is to ensure that HM Government’s exchequer is as full as possible, not to worry about the jobs of excessively rewarded football players.

Amazing how now Scottish football won’t survive without “The Rangers”.

When it was mooted that EPL admission was possible, most “commentators” said “let them go. We’ll be better off without”.

    Utter hypocrisy.

  3. Amongst all of the furore on FF last night, I did have to feel sorry for one poster (not a timfiltrator – way too many posts) who was clearly not the most educated on the blog, who came into a full blown debate on how it had all happened, what the future held, who should be blamed etc, and asked ” excuse me asking but what is an EBT?”, got a reply eventually, and returned to thank the orc who answered him and then asked ” excuse me asking again, but what is administration?”

I have visions of him wandering around Ibroke stadium 3 months after they have been extinct and asking passers by ” excuse me, what time is K.O.?”

  4. According to the SPL website this is Rangers trophies since 1999. It’ll be nice to strip off the trophies that come under the period of EBTs , whatever that is.

very quickly, each club owns a share in the SPL and these are transferred automatically to clubs promoted from those relegated. If a space opens then:

Except where such transfer is occasioned by the promotion of an association football club from and relegation of a Club to the SFL the consent of the Board shall be required before the transfer of any Share shall be registered.

83% of the board have to vote for this so if 5 of 6 board members vote yes, then its ok. If 2 vote against it then no newco can be admitted.

  11. How many more times do we have play Motherwell this season? That would make (ahem) how many points we could drop in their favour? :)

  12. medtim,

SPL rules state that if a club goes bust during the season the number of relegation places is reduced. So the other eleven teams should carry on with one to be promoted from the first division as normal at the end of the season.

The rules would need to be ignored to allow any new club (of whatever kind) to enter the league other than through promotion.

  13. If it is true that Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee UNited are going to join us in Vetoing Rangers Newco then that is great news.

ALL these clubs are looking at the stories today and seeing the financial advantages Rangers have had over them and they are rightly disgusted.

Aberdeen and Dundee United, once powerhouses of the Scottish game have been cheated. The Thompson family in particular I hope have never forgotten the day when McCurry cheated their club at Ibrox by his inaction. Craig Levein’s rant still lives in the memory. Mr Thompson the elder ploughed his own money into United to make them a better side and saw his dream of winning a trophy that season dashed by Kenny Clark who refused to give United a penalty at 1-0 which should have brought them their first trophy since 1994. Instead Rangers won with a team assembled at a cost they could not pay for and the obligatory honest mistake in their favour. The Thompson family should remember this.

Aberdeen have long hated the Glasgow clubs and long for the days of being a force again. Had Rangers not had the team they had had Aberdeen would have more league championships to their name, more Cups and in 2007 they might have been in the Champions League qualifiers at least against a Red Star Belgrade team low on talent. Who knows where that might have led – Pittodrie once again saw Aberdeen in Europe that season taking on the mighty Bayern Munich and almost beating them at home after a great run of form in the UEFA cup defeating sides from Ukraine and Denmark in the process. the Pittodrie faithful are still there waiting for a shot in the arm and they are the third force if they have success.

Hibs and Hearts too have reason to be angry, Hearts would have had more Champion’s league shots (failed though they might have been) and Hibs as a very well run club with the players poached by other clubs might have won more.

Rangers in their current form and using their practices are a cancer on Scottish football and that cancer must not be given a free pass to do it again.

I welcome news that those in the East will support a veto – it will be a temporary loss of SOME money but Rangers will come back soon enough with their supporters spending money to watch them and as we know, there are also the cups.

    Justice must be done.

Consequently, he had no valid answer to what you said.

In effect, he is stuck in the same sort of mindset that his ilk have been in for decades.

Just as he/they didn’t question what DM et al were doing, as long as they stuffed us and won trophies, they actually need to believe that they are essential to Scottish Football, to Scotland, to society and beyond.

When we demanded the cash up front for the tickets for the game on the 28th the press countered with reports that Rangers would do the same in March.

Not a chance in hell should Celtic acquiesce. We’ll handle the tickets, we’ll collect the cash, and IF the game goes ahead we’ll pass the monies on in the manner agreed with standard practice for the SPL. Or keep it for the damage caused on the 28th.

Personally I seriously doubt that game will go ahead.

I have heard reports this morning that Kyle Bartley is to be released this week, and other players out of contract in the summer are next, 1st teamers. Lafferty too because of a clause triggering a new payment to Burnley.

This is where it gets messy, the team on the park starts getting embarrassed. Not only will they not want to be embarrassed by Celtic but there will soon be public order fears. My guess is that Rangers’ last game of football will be played before our meeting in March. Seriously.
