Failing up in football

330

European football news this week featured Vincent Kompany “failing up”.  After overseeing Burnley’s relegation from the topflight of English football, the affable Belgian was appointed manager of Bayern Munich.  Charm gets you places, people!

Hot on the heels of that, the Newco chief executive James Bisgrove handed in his resignation, he’s off to work his magic in Saudi.  If Bisgrove ever gives a seminar on job interview technique, sign up.  This is the guy who, as commercial director, booked Newco at the Sydney tournament in 2022 for less than half the fee Celtic’s commercial director, Adrian Filby, negotiated.

Newco are both delighted at Bisgrove’s work in his various roles at the club, and totally OK that he’s moving on.  Suggestions that churning through three managers and three chief execs in 18 months is a sign of a club in perpetual crisis is unworthy of you.

Is Greg Taylor not in the Scotland squad ?

Of course not, he plays for Celtic, don’t you know. Check out SFTB’s post earlier.

How did Celtic Ladies manage to win their league?

I just checked the Scotland squad and it has 8 Rangers players and just one Celtic player in it, our captain, who has remained on the bench throughout the game.

  4. Celtic have confirmed they will take on Queen’s Park in a pre-season friendly this summer before jetting off for their US tour.

Five days after their first friendly of the off-season against Ayr United at Somerset Park, the Premiership and Scottish Cup champions will make the short trip to the City Stadium to face Callum Davidson’s Queen’s Park in an evening kick-off on Wednesday, July 10.

It will be the first time that the two sides have met in over 15 years, when Celtic claimed a narrow 2-1 victory in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park in February 2009. The two domestic friendlies will serve as ideal preparation for Brendan Rodgers’ men, who will then step up the gears during their pre-season tour across the pond. The Hoops take on DC United on Sunday July 21, before glamour clashes against Premier League duo Manchester City (Wednesday, July 24) and Chelsea (Saturday, June 25) in the Florida Cup.

  5. Newly-retired Joe Hart is in no rush to give up Celtic as the adored keeper posted a late night love bomb to the club he loves.

The 37-year-old – riding off into the sunset after securing seven trophies at Parkhead – was in fine fettle as he and guitarist Jack Mulholland staged an impromptu concert after former team-mate Josip Juranovic’s wedding. Hart belted out his own rendition of ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ which has been chanted gleefully by Parkhead punters in the wake of another dominant season.

Apparently a guy said to Bill Withers, “there ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone.”

    He said, “I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know…”

I found myself opening a lot of threads with topics or singers/songs which didn’t float my boat so now, as my time on the blog is limited, I regretfully don’t open any!

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. A lovely day in old Glasgow Town.

  13. Some intesting facts if all true.

Real Madrid have never contested the EC/CL Final at Wembley Stadium, though won twice at Hampden Park

The last team to beat Real Madrid in a Euro Final were Aberdeen 2-1 in 1983, over 40 years go.

En route to the last CL Final at Wembley in 2013 Borussia Dortmund beat Real Madrid in the Semi-Final

And a rarely mentioned one, Paul Lambert played for Borussia Dortmund the last time they won the CL back in er back in the day! (Not a lotta people know that)

Sincere apologies bhoys. The particular series of pictures that might have led to St Stivs request was actually a deliberate attempt to get minds turning. They were all players who had turned out for M. Utd and Celtic, in light of the current rumour about the M. Utd goalkeeper. Anyway, point taken. I will explain the link from now on.
