Failing up in football

330

European football news this week featured Vincent Kompany “failing up”.  After overseeing Burnley’s relegation from the topflight of English football, the affable Belgian was appointed manager of Bayern Munich.  Charm gets you places, people!

Hot on the heels of that, the Newco chief executive James Bisgrove handed in his resignation, he’s off to work his magic in Saudi.  If Bisgrove ever gives a seminar on job interview technique, sign up.  This is the guy who, as commercial director, booked Newco at the Sydney tournament in 2022 for less than half the fee Celtic’s commercial director, Adrian Filby, negotiated.

Newco are both delighted at Bisgrove’s work in his various roles at the club, and totally OK that he’s moving on.  Suggestions that churning through three managers and three chief execs in 18 months is a sign of a club in perpetual crisis is unworthy of you.

We know the seedlings assuming cmqualofocation from Play offs etc.

Here is my preference for potential progression :

    4 Strum Graz & Ferencvaros

    2 Brugge & Shakthar

    3 Maccabi & Dynamo Zagreb

    3 Milan & PSV

    2 Arsenal & Athletico Madrid

When I first heard about this I was sure it was a wind up.

When I found out it was for real my first thought, genuinely, was.

“If the lad is hard up for money, couldn’t his former club have a benefit match for him?”

I then, belatedly, recalled what happens to the takings when r2ngers host charity matches.

  9. And so.

    Can I highly recommend

Battle for Celtic episode 9. Jock Brown. 75 sharp as a tack what a brilliant intelligent dare I say outstanding for Celtic and Fergus.

    Done in by the press.

  10. Only goals win games. Everything else is supplementrary.

Guys who can score goals are pivotal.

Im sure Brendan Rodgers gets that and subsequent ins / outs will reflect that.

Hearing Daniel Kelly been offered 9k/wk by spurs, we’ve offered him 1k/wk

  18. Daniel is a promising early developer amongst our youth team. He has been given the encouragement of game time by Brendan.

The Spurs Youth squad (like that of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, City and United etc;) is full of talent from all over the world. Their senior squads are full of international players who barely get a game for them. To break through in that company is much more difficult than breaking through at Celtic, which has been hard enough for Daniel and other B team players.

I am sure Celtic could offer Daniel wage parity with Odin Holm, who occupies a similar squad position to him but we cannot go down the road of offering wages above the level that some first team regulars may be getting. I would wonder if the likes of Tony Ralston or Steven Welsh are getting more than 9k a week. That is the world we live in – where Southampton & bournemouth can steal players from us. Where guys like Riley McGree prefer Middlesborough to us and where Billy Sharp preferred to bounce between teams in the Championship and League One than come to us.

I think Daniel is not as good as Ben Doak is but I’m sure he’s got a good conceit of himself (and I don’t mean that in a bad way) but like the guys who left us for Bayern and Man City, they get good wages for a while but they damage their career earning prospects by getting clogged for a few years in a pipeline crammed with similar good talent.

really informative post, ta for that.

I am convinced, the non attending season card holder will not be allowed in the future, it is just a matter of time , use it (or pass it on) or lose it, just a matter of time.

man united, the organisation do a million things wrong, but even so, they went to war with the fans again on actually attending matches, and they win again, because there are thousands more wanting to be there than actually attending,

it willcome to celtic park as soon as someone in power shows an interest.

    cheers

    ……………………….

I would say that your vision of Celtic taking season tickets from supporters who don’t attend every game has absolutely zero chance of happening. I don’t know the current price of standard season tickets but I know it’s in excess of £600 and the idea of Celtic monitoring fans with regard to their attendance and confiscating the tickets of fans who have ponied up £600+ for several years in a row before a ball is even kicked but misses a few games for whatever reason, illness or family events, would be financial suicide and makes no business sense whatsoever.

The Club needs the comfort of knowing that fans who have paid their money for years will keep on doing so and it is these fans they rely on to continue to do so and not fans waiting in the background.

  20. Bada

That will be Daniel offski then, too bad, he will be loaned out in 2 years to the mediocrity of the lower divisions, again it brings into focus our academy, it produces players for other teams rarely do any have the necessary skills attitude and ability to make it at first team level for Celtic, but this lack of a reserve league needs addressing or what is the point of Lennoxtown.
