Falkirk and Motherwell remain dangerous

116

Gravity has caught up with Falkirk, and Motherwell in recent weeks.  Motherwell have lost four of their last five games, taking a solitary point at home to Hibs.  Falkirk’s only win in their last five was at Motherwell, a result sandwiched between home defeats to St Mirren and Newco, before Saturday’s Hampden loss to Dunfermline.

Despite this, John McGlynn and Jens Berthel Askou will surely have no other competition for the Manager of the Year award.  McGlynn achieved a top six finish after securing two successive promotions for Falkirk.  Motherwell finished second in the SPL as recently as 2014, but their fans are clear, Askou’s football is the best they have seen from their side.  He is an outstanding talent.

If they recover their focus, they are both capable of taking points off anyone in the league.  They will almost certainly have a say in who eventually finishes top.  We will be tested against both.

  1. Looks like St Johnstone will win their league tonight.

    Good game and a decent crowd ( >7500 )

  2. 6 games to go

It’s not gonna be pretty, and we just have to be a little better than each team we face

We don’t have the team and the quality of even last year

But we know what we have to do

    6 cup finals to win,

If we do, we win the league and the cup

    Its still in our hands

  3. BLOGGA – the Leicester situation is a cautionary tale.

    Posted by a Leicester fan….

King Power’s investment into Leicester City spans several areas:

    £39m – to purchase the club (2010)

    £36m – shareholder investment during 2011–12

    £17m – to purchase the stadium (2013)

    £103m – debt-to-equity conversion (2013)

    £194m – debt-to-equity conversion (2023)

    Total disclosed: £389 million

I see a figure of £420M posted elsewhere.

The owners have won a few trophies, but now own a business that at its peak was valued at c.£630M.

Today, with their current trajectory, they might not get even half of that number.

An under performing squad, valued at c.£120M and burdened by overweight contracts, might be worth a fraction in a fire sale.

It would be good to see one or more of these billionaire foreign investors get burnt as they head back to their shores with tail tucked. No racism or prejudice involved there, just total disdain for the ruinous influence of these grandstanding impresarios, as they flex financially with no consideration for the club and its fans.

It’s a seductive dance, until the music stops playing.

Fans need to be careful what they wish for when seeking ownership or board change.

Looks like Chelski are going down the pan as well – poor on the pitch and “balance sheet issues” as well according to the commentator.

They’ve not been themselves since the Russians left.

MOR comes on in 90 minutes just as Chelski go 3-0 down.

Yep, St Johnstone back in the league should be good. Another manager who tries to play football.

    The destination is the prize.

The journey – game by game – will probs be an ugly, tense and not very pretty thing to watch

  7. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

If you have left your last two jobs after building successful teams and then having your best players sold and not replaced I’m not sure Celtic would be the obvious next destination…….

  8. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

    Gedi – yes indeed.

I honestly had no idea of their situation until B78 brought it up.

It will be interesting to see if what was considered a “trophy asset” is still considered a trophy asset in Division One.

  9. That’s some stat….last time Chelsea failed to score in 5 League games in a row…..The Titanic went down. 🛳️🌊🌫️

  11. Falkirk have done well this season no question. But we have beaten them four times already this season including in the League Cup. As good a first post split fixture as we could have got. Still got to go out there and get the right result though. Four wins in a row if we do, the kind of run that we hoped for but would not predict a few weeks back. Not quite got the right balance across the midfield, or should I say for the whole of a game.

And yet Reo & Bernardo cannot get a look in. Hope both AJ and young Osmand can be considered, not because I’m pinning allour hopes on them, but that they would give us a couple more options, and boost the squad into the bargain. Players have to come back sometime, hopefully this is their time.

Glasner would be an excellent appointment, and I would absolutely want him to have full responsibility for the whole football operations function. I think that the same would be true for any appointment of a similar caliber.

*and why NOT as rogers had I believe full control and possibly MON has right now

  13. As did the Big Mhan he actually mentioned it on the Centenary Video, when he said “it’s no use saying you have control when you don’t” or words to that effect, and I have no doubt so did Wullie Maley, so it’s NOT a new thing.

  15. Think Glasner, very good manager,he will possibly get the Chelsea job,is leaving Palace because of the Board !!!!!!!.

Dunfermline tonight looking like a Championship team. Not a very good one.

  16. If we don’t see AJ or Osman get game time at the weekend at home, cannot see it happening at Easter Rd,then its the Huns,h,mm,can’t see that gamble.

    It has to be the weekend.,30 mins.If not,when ?.

  17. TB

AJ broke down again last month or so with Canada

If we see him in April will be good going

Osman, I have no idea – think he is back in training

But both of them will take weeks to get to match fitness and sharpness

This season I expect both to get minutes but struggle to make any impression

We have to go with what we have……

INCREDIBLE Bernard Ponsonby Speech AGAINST Dermott Desmond & The Celtic Board

    https://youtu.be/eew3XWdWi0E

“If Mr Desmond remains, I suspect nothing much changes”

    Boom above and below

Explanation below on why Leicester city is tumbling down the English pyramid

But it spends more than double what it earns. Has been doing so for seven years. That should be worrying.

Remember the following next time someone tells you @LaLiga is behind.

La Liga just showed us its 24/25 numbers. A record €5.464 billion in total revenue. A record 17.4 million fans in grounds. €70 million profit before tax. Squad costs held at 70% of income. A league that lives within its means, but also one that is growing as well.

Here’s what really doesn’t get said enough, although it might not be fully surprising.

#LaLiga leads Europe in academy player market value.

€1.46 billion. Ahead of the #PremierLeague.

Those players represent 26.6% of LaLiga’s total market value. In England? 9.7%.

LaLiga academy players play nearly 20% of all minutes in the league. In England, 13.5%.

This is a league that develops talent, trusts it, and builds on it. 91% of those academy players are Spanish.

The Premier League is a financial phenomenon. Of course it is, no one is pretending otherwise.

But it spends more than double what it earns. Has been doing so for seven years. That should be worrying.

A league that turns a profit, fills its stadiums, and leads Europe in growing its own? It sounds to me like it is a good way to run football.

Things to improve: refereeing, VAR, the behaviour of fans (LaLiga has been fighting racism and discrimination, but even more has to be done), the departure of talent, more women involved in decision making at all levels.

La Liga’s Virtue vs the Premier League’s Power: The Truth Behind the Numbers.

Guillem Balague, the celebrated Spanish sports journalist wrote this – Remember the following next time someone tells you LaLiga is behind.

Still zero communication from the club on the clearly much needed changes in terms of structure, model and personnel required for the football operation

Like Bernard I suspect nothing significant will change…..DD is looking for the next messiah manager and the recruitment model he still controls

  23. Re the Bernard Ponsonby speech – brilliant and sums up exactly how i feel. Even better that he is a product of my old school, Trinity High in Eastfield/Cambuslang.

I advocated for him to be the Comms guy for Celtic or at least a link between fan and Club. That won’t happen now given what he said but it shows what we are missing in our Club – leadership, empathy, understanding and soul.

  32. This place really has gone mad now.

A political journalist says a few things about the owner of Celtic football club and how it is run and because he is a Celtic fan he should now be the next Chairman or CEO or whatever.

The chap has zero management experience and even less commercial or business accountability. Not aware he has any football industry background etc.

    Nice guy though. Nice guy.

  33. B78 – he’ll not get a position at Celtic now but to dismiss one of the best political journalists of recent times as not having any transferrable skills that he could bring to Celtic is, may I say, rather short sighted.
