Familiar demons

In any other season, the three points would have been secured by David Turnbull’s exquisite free-kick on 82 minutes, but the fragility around everything Celtic at the moment convinced no one the game was over.

A Hibs free-kick in added time saw three Celtic players get in each other’s way on the goal line, leaving three unattended attackers ready to pounce around the six yard line.  Another free kick conceded in a dangerous area, another example of defensive disorganisation and another tale of woe as Hibs scored their first goal and collected their only point in four games.

With Ryan Christie unavailable, David Turnbull moved to the right, allowing Tom Rogic a rare start in the advanced point of the diamond.  This may have worked on paper but on the field, it only demonstrated what a valuable asset Turnbull has become in the middle of the park.  15 minutes after moving into his accustomed 10 position, Turnbull won and converted a free kick that should have been enough against a Hibs team low on confidence.

Instead, the demons that haunted Celtic for most of the season returned.  Diego Laxalt conceded the free-kick, Turnbull was beaten to the header, Conor Hazard flapped at the second ball before Shane Duffy and Callum McGregor simultaneously attempted to clear, only managing to usher the ball in the direction of Nisbet.

After the game, I realised I felt worse after we equalised in added time against Hibs in November than on losing a late goal last night.  The points dropped in November felt significant, I cannot say the same about last night’s.

Was going to go on a 10,000 word rant but can’t be bothered.

We’ve fucked it up big time.

PL & DD have got the Rangers back.

    Lennon is seemingly unsackable.

Shut up – and keep giving us your money.

  5. SFTB – my wee late Mum wasn’t a big football fan. But she loved the Lions. She’d often say, ‘Jock Stein said…..’

So to paraphrase the gentleman himself, Celtic always have to take the officials out of the equation in a game because they’re always part of the equation in the system. Always have, always will.

The MIBs have played their normal role this season. No more or less really. They’re a given. A ‘known known’. That’s why giving away a free kick, like Laxalt did with that lazy swing, always has to be avoided.

And also because, under the tenure of several managers now (going back to NFL Series1), we’ve been totally inept at defending such crosses.

I dint think we are going to get any common ground on this.

The more I watch it, the more disappointed I am with Turnbull , two players jostling and one wants it more. I stand by my earlier description…outmuscled .

  11. Stephen Welsh is twenty one years old next week, and has made just over twenty league and cup appearances in that time, fifteen for Greenock Morton, in season 2019-19. Could well have been more had he not been recalled this time last year for no purpose whatsoever. Played not too bad last night alongside Shane Duffy, and could benefit from game time either at Celtic or elsewhere. I only mention him to highlight yet another glaring weakness at Parkhead, our complete failure to develop young players. I have been critical of Academies over the years, and the Development League is no substitute for real player development, which is best achieved by being introduced to the top team and working with the first team squad. Or was anyway, with Shaun Maloney, Liam Miller, Aiden McGeady, and John Kennedy, and more recently Kieran Tierney. We will not produce many, or not for Celtic anyways, but we should be able to develop some young players in the way that others have produced McArthur, McCarthy, Snodgrass, Armstrong, Robertson et al. Another area that needs to be re-addressed in the near future.

Which is why I acknowledged that I was not pointing this out as an excuse for dropping points or for this season’s failures.

I am merely surprised that diverse posters, including Paul 67 in his leader (or PL himself, as many deluded believe), see nothing wrong with that Hibbee left arm or the climbing. Poor Erik merely had his arms round Clint Hill’s waist (as Clint was doing the same to him) but Clint knew that falling to the ground would “buy” the decision, whereas DT was ignored as he was felled.

In any other season we would maybe have not allowed ourselves to travel across the world during a global pandemic. In any other season we may not have appointed a piss poor manager in the showers etc etc….

  16. Another worry last night was the young players, Harper,Oxo Flex,Dembele, they looked a mile off it,major development issue, difficult I know to come into the team right now but they are 18/19,we play teams every week with 3/4/5 of the same age,and can handle it.Another symptom of Lennon’s refusal to play youngsters, we should be using them from the bench, when games are going well (I know, I know) .Who was the last one through Lennoxtown to hold down a jersey? Tierney about 6 years ago? Our problems as a Club are much deeper than not having a right back in the squad. We have 35 full time coaches at Lennoxtown, at all levels, how much is that every year? We need a complete overhaul on and off the park.

Agree 100%, huge amount of money being spent here, for limited return

( suppose we can quote the odd gem like Kieran, and Calum)

    Not good enough though

We should be seeing at least 1 per season

Fingers crossed Stephen Welsh get a chance

  18. Mikey Johnston did not surprise last night , this boy will not make it at Celtic.

I thought about posting similar last night but as it was during the game I thought better of slaughtering the set up , we produce players for lower level teams but not players who would grace our first team ..

Value for money doesn’t seem to be part of the set up yet we squander millions on projects every year

  24. If Neil Lennon gave more game time to players like Shved ,Bayo Kimala,Dembela,we might be in a better position today ,everything is down to him ,tactics are all wrong,I know one thing Ronny Delia was a better coach than him, that mans problems was players like Mulgrew ,Commons they disrespected that man,and John Collins was another coach a good fitness manager, them two put the boot into him to.
