I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here). The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community. The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.
The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child. The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.
Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter. Well done to Howson and his collaborators. If you get a chance, check it out.
Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs. If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.
Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.
The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club. The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.
The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers. Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.
Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00. We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill. Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.
These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.
We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic. We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.
ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

I heard that a an English Lord, known for bieng a sprinter, author and jailbird is alleged to have predicted trouble flaring up at the Ajax -Celtic game last year and lots of convictions.
If all goes as hoped with the court cases today then it will an angry’n’sturmey archer.

Match would never have been played today. Pitch bone hard because of frost and covered with sand. Celtic players had sannies on! Fainted at the end of game as I pushed through crowd at Celtic End and was passed down the crowd above their heads, put on a stretcher and woke up under the Main stand getting smelling salts from ambulance man. Those were the days.

Yes that’s right – Bertie tells the story.
We used Caesar because we cover the period 1978 to 1991 in the new book -at 480 pages it is a big one!
We hope to have Caesar on the blog again ( he made one post previously on a sad day) – maybe next Thursday.
Dead heat for me, between Henke chip , and McAvennie’s goal in 87/88 parkhead fixture…. that turn and pass from McStay to Stark and the cross and goal. The turn and pass cemented McStay’s legend for me.
He also scored a peach at Ibrox that season, and along with Walkers poaching with a chest finish.
Also, not to dredge up a bleak era, but there was a double header around 92/93 against them, league and cup, and Coyne sneaked one in that might have prompted my biggest celebration. I guess context is everything.
Tallybhoy,
I am looking for some advice and I hope you might be able to help.
During the summer, I discovered Limoncino – Lidl’s (not so good – but it was my first), Lazzaroni’s, and Pallini’s. I think the Lazzaroni’s Limoncino is my favourite.
Do you have any experience of them and do you have any recommendations?
Thanks in advance from a dreich Tayport.
Oh, aye, and Maloney in Strachans first season. Loved that one.

***Lunchtime Quiz – The Answers***
Some ‘honours’ are a wee bit less prestigious than others but here goes…
Jock Stein
Scotland – Rous Cup (1985)
Davie Hay
Lillestrøm SK – Norwegian League Championship (1989)
Livingston – Scottish First Division title (as co-manager 2000–01), Scottish League Cup (2004)
John Barnes
Jamaica – Caribbean Championship (2008)
Kenny Dalglish
Liverpool – English League Cup (2012)
With Davie Hay and Kenny Dalglish the only ones winning any major honours, it’s a poor return for 74 years of post-Celtic management.

You’ve gotten me thinking about some of the great goals. One which sticks in my memory was by Harry Hood, think it was St Mirren. Jinky crossed the ball and Harry with both feet off the ground, trapped the ball with his left and smacked it into the net from about 25 yards. Memory fades but I’m certain he was about 15 feet off the ground at the time!! Well nearly.

From The Telegraph.
Kevin and Ian Maxwell both faced bankruptcy proceedings over a joint loan debt
Two sons of the disgraced media boss Robert Maxwell have escaped bankruptcy over a joint loan debt.
Kevin Maxwell, 55, and Ian Maxwell, 58, both faced bankruptcy petitions at the High Court in London over an unspecified sum, but the petitions were dismissed.
Wendy Parker, representing DCF (UK) Ltd, a loan company based in Bexhill on Sea in Sussex, told the court the parties had “agreed terms.”
Neither brother was in court for the brief hearing, which came after Kevin was banned from running a company for eight years in 2011 following an investigation by the Insolvency Service.
The investigation found that he and two other directors had diverted more than £2 million out of Syncro, a Manchester-based construction company he ran, shortly before it went into administration.
Kevin had previously been made Britain’s biggest bankrupt in 1992, with debts of more than £400 million.
A year earlier, his father was found drowned at the age of 68 after apparently falling from his yacht off the Tenerife coast.
The two brothers, who had both sat on the board of Maxwell Communications Corporation, were investigated after his death over an alleged conspiracy to defraud the company’s pension fund but both were cleared of fraud in 1996.
