Fan pressure gets through to SPL chairmen

714

My initial reaction, that the outcome from today’s SPL meeting and votes on Financial Fair Play, was on the upside of expectations, appears to be well founded.  All matters not relating to a Newco football team were passed.  Clubs had the opportunity to vote through a process to allow a Newco access the league but it was apparent that there was clearly insufficient support for this proposal, making subsequent proposals to apply sanctions to a Newco moot.

I understand sentiment towards Rangers reflected the comments from St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, who said, “What’s a court getting involved in football for? The decision had been made.”

There is no question that fan pressure has been brought to bear on club chairmen.

This interpretation compares starkly with BBC Reporting Scotland tonight who, if I paraphrase, said, ‘If Rangers don’t get a CVA, depending on your point of view, they will either get “back” into the SPL with light or with punitive punishment’.  The broadcaster also threw in the suggestion that ‘Rangers’ might get ‘back’ in without punishment.

I’m a huge admirer of Reporting Scotland but this was perhaps the worst 60 seconds in 85 years of BBC reporting.  There was a decision made to ignore the real story, that no facility to get a Newco (not Rangers) into the SPL was approved, to ignore the outcome of several months of fan pressure, and to tailor a story that suits a controversial narrative.

Fortunately, it looks like the BBC will be back on form soon, but they really need to look at what happened today.

As for the CVA, it becomes less and less likely by the hour.

UPDATE

Having spoken to BBC Reporting Scotland’s Alastair Lamont it’s clear he has been briefed differently from me, which explains the contrast between our interpretations. This story is becoming a nightmare to report, and probably to read. Fair play to Alastair for being up for the debate. I feel much better about my favourite news programme.

For the debate about Scots and for Ernie in particular

    Lets be clear.

Scots did some terrible things as part of the British Empire. The Scots on the make who worked in the slave trade were and are a disgrace to the nation. They would fit nicely in with the Peepel of today.

But lets be clear about a few things:

From the moment the union was conceived, there was a movement towards the notion of “North Briton” and North Britons, not Scots. That was in language as well as in politics.

REAL Scots like Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns and Lewis Grassic Gibbon (Mitchell) saw through the nonsense and wrote it thus mocking these types. They represent the real Scotland. These men mocked the Church and its hypocrisy and it mocked high society and its double standards. Scots society has long been more community minded than some other parts of the world and that is commendable.

Go further and look at the demographics of Scotland in the 18th and 19th Centuries – it was very much a lowland/Highland issue and think how the Highlanders were treated in the clearances. Hence the huge Scots diaspora worldwide. It isn’t that much different from the Irish (albeit Famine was the reason for so many Irish having to move and it was a far worse situation on a human level nevertheless it was forced migration in both cases). Have those of Highland descent less right to harbour hatred towards the way their ancestors were treated? I think not.

Those who remained after the 45 and the clearances were broken and beaten down that they had little choice but to move to Glasgow for work (there are more Highland names in the Glasgow phone book than anywhere else in Scotland especially in the west end – just look at some of the pubs for further evidence) and the others who remained became Soldiers to survive. Lets face it your choices were:

    1. Move to a big city for work

    2. Emigrate (forcibly in many cases)

    3. Join the army

    4. Struggle on in your wee croft if you were allowed to

If you want to blame anyone or anything blame Political reconstruction of society – this is the sad progress that was enforced on the Highland part of Scotland in particular. That’s what made it all come out like this.

Both the Scots and the Irish share so much history and have suffered at the hands of English/British politics and colonialism and indeed from their own people either betraying them for money or power.

To label an entire people as good or bad is moronic and shows a lack of understanding or tolerance.

For the record, I am Scottish and always have felt Scottish and not Irish. My mentality is Scottish my outlook on life is Scottish – a total pessimist. I have great love and respect for Ireland as it was the country of my forefathers on my Mother’s side at least but I couldn’t lay claim to being Irish nor would I, I’d just look stupid the word Celtic is of both Ireland and Scotland and I like that. I would hope that I have respect for all nationalities and peoples except the peepel – they are not due respect, only pity for their narrow minded views and disgust at their mentality and actions.

If you hate an entire nation of people based on them in my view you are not that much different from them nor are you better. This is not directed at anyone in particular, it is just an observation.

The great diffrence between the British Empire and the Roman Empire is of course time; the methods used by the Romans were just the same, but because it was so long ago we just tend to gaze and wonder at the likes of the Colosseum.

In hundreds of years the sins of the British Empire will be forgotten as future generations gaze in wonder at the Forth Rail Bridge.

  16. I believe that there are people heavily involved in this rangers scandal , worried as hell that their part is discovered ,worried that the chap on the door is not far off . Or that they will pick up the rags and discover they have been rumbled , they are out there alright . What would we celts give for a whistleblower. A leaked memo . Or a meet with alex thompson on the QT . Just someone who has examined their conscience and wants to get it off their chest . Until then let the digging commence.
