My initial reaction, that the outcome from today’s SPL meeting and votes on Financial Fair Play, was on the upside of expectations, appears to be well founded. All matters not relating to a Newco football team were passed. Clubs had the opportunity to vote through a process to allow a Newco access the league but it was apparent that there was clearly insufficient support for this proposal, making subsequent proposals to apply sanctions to a Newco moot.
I understand sentiment towards Rangers reflected the comments from St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, who said, “What’s a court getting involved in football for? The decision had been made.”
There is no question that fan pressure has been brought to bear on club chairmen.
This interpretation compares starkly with BBC Reporting Scotland tonight who, if I paraphrase, said, ‘If Rangers don’t get a CVA, depending on your point of view, they will either get “back” into the SPL with light or with punitive punishment’. The broadcaster also threw in the suggestion that ‘Rangers’ might get ‘back’ in without punishment.
I’m a huge admirer of Reporting Scotland but this was perhaps the worst 60 seconds in 85 years of BBC reporting. There was a decision made to ignore the real story, that no facility to get a Newco (not Rangers) into the SPL was approved, to ignore the outcome of several months of fan pressure, and to tailor a story that suits a controversial narrative.
Fortunately, it looks like the BBC will be back on form soon, but they really need to look at what happened today.
As for the CVA, it becomes less and less likely by the hour.
UPDATE
Having spoken to BBC Reporting Scotland’s Alastair Lamont it’s clear he has been briefed differently from me, which explains the contrast between our interpretations. This story is becoming a nightmare to report, and probably to read. Fair play to Alastair for being up for the debate. I feel much better about my favourite news programme.

Surely what ever this mob done was not as bad as rangers in administration.
The UEFA Appeals Body has today decided
to exclude the Turkish club Beşiktaş JK from
the next two UEFA club competitions for
which it qualifies in the next five seasons, for
violation of the UEFA Club Licensing and
Financial Fair Play Regulations. The
exclusion for the second competition is
suspended for a probationary period of five
years.
The Appeals Body met to rule on an appeal
lodged by the UEFA Disciplinary Inspector
against the decision of the Control and
Disciplinary Body of 1 May and a cross-
appeal filed by Beşiktaş. The cross-appeal
was partially admitted. The fine of €500,000
imposed by the first instance is reduced to
€200,000, of which €100,000 is suspended
for a probationary period of five years.
At the same meeting, the appeal case of
Turkish club Bursaspor was heard. The
appeal was partially admitted. Bursaspor
are excluded from one UEFA club
competiton for which it qualifies in the next
four seasons, for violation of the UEFA Club
Licensing and Financial Fair Play
Regulations. The cross-appeal of Bursaspor
is partially admitted, and the fine of
€200,000 is reduced to €50,000 suspended
for a probationary period of four years.
These decisions are final subject to an
appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
(CAS).

Season tickets. European football. League football.
Three things we have and they don’t.
Today’s outcome is better than what I expected. Initially I didn’t think decisions would be taken today but in the end I’m glad they went ahead. As I said earlier, I would ideally have liked a “no to newcos” rule introduced. But by not setting a defined route they have at least retained the uncertainty of what might happen if such a proposal is made. And that can’t be good news for Mr Green.

Rankers must be a stck on:)

Do you not think it is telling that after holding court on his iast visit to Hampden, Green got on his bike sharpish today and ignored the media.

Me too. I am greatly heartened by the comments from the St M chairman. If this is representative of all then (1) we have nothing to fear and (2) The fighting fund who pushed for the appeal have, indeed, killed their club and restored integrity to our game.

Great news concerning wee Oscar. My class have been saying a Decade of the Rosary each school day in May and have been remembering him in our special intentions.
They’ll be delighted to hear the news.

Did they really use the phrase ‘punitive punishment’? That’s a belting belter that is!
Oh and the reason they wont kill a new co idea

or manu dis a corrupt
So midnight it is for the next installment? Sweet. 7pm my time.
Also if GIlmour is speaking for the others, it explains why Green didn’t want to hang around afterwards. Billy no-mates.
Was there any update on the outcome of the SPL Board meeting to discuss the dual contracts issue?
Could RFC(IA) end up being expelled by two organisations on the same day, tomorrow?

SparkleGhirl,
Going to court was an own goal in more ways than one. Other clubs are, I think, beginning to reassess exactly how much they need them. Michael Johnston’s statement about commerical matters outweighing integrity doesn’t look too clever now.
They bloody tims at the bBC at it again, trying their best to show they are not tims.

Gilmour is a St. Mirren man to the core. Although he likes his cricket playing for both Ferguslie and Kelburne in his younger days as well as hockey for Kelburne as well.
I would take his anger at der hun at face value.
Bought my first pair of boots out of his dads shop in Paisley.
He will play this with a straight bat (unlike his cricket days).
Great photo’s Stringer Bell.
The guy in the fourth one is a ringer for Freddie Flintoff.
Don’t care if the Bat is gay or straight, no need to be cruel to a dumb ‘Animal’!

For the people, by the people! Without fans football is nothing. Thankfully that notion seems to have gotten through to the weak-minded. Perhaps the effect of fan-power on their pockets had some influence too.
Don’t say it is possible that integrity is coming round the Scottish mountains when she comes?

Could it be today’s result is like a 0-0 draw in the first leg of a euro tie. A pretty neutral result with work still to do – but none of us were at the game! So don’t know the manner of the draw. It is possible that the BBC reporting of the game is inaccurate and they have put a positive spin for rfc on the draw, whereas the reality could be the opposite, they got battered, and it could be the case they clearly have little chance in the 2nd leg, with little, surprisingly little, support demonstrated for them today.
The end is coming…enjoy the days and weeks ahead…

Paul67,
I don’t think it is Reporting Scotland itself; it is BBC Scotland’s sports (thems supporting) department.
