Fans Against Criminalisation campaign steps up

302

Fans Against Criminalisation (FAC) are closer than ever to achieving their goal of having the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act repealed. While the majority in the Scottish Parliament are on their side, the Scottish Government have gone deaf to the voice of the Scottish people in the hope they can successfully distract attention from the issue.

FAC would like you to join their campaign by emailing your MSP. The Celtic Trust have made the process easy with a link to ‘Find my MSP’ and an email template here.

Good luck to all who join the campaign.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

  6. Since it’s a slow week and Carillion has been mentioned, on this frigid day in southern Ontario, here’s a wee story about one of its conservative allies.

Carillion was created through restructuring with Tarmac who had previously acquired Wimpey’s construction and minerals divisions. In the 70s Wimpey and Plessey vied to be the largest contributors to the tory party

A wee bit of history about where Plessey plundered first:

In the mid-1950’s the Royal Naval Torpedo Factory (RNTF) at Greenock closed down and its work was transferred to Alexandria. While many of the Greenock workers commuted by specially laid on buses (via the Erskine Ferry), many came with their families to live in the Vale of Leven. This was the latest wave of “immigration” to the Vale, and easily the shortest distance travelled. Most of the people from Greenock and Gourock moved into new houses in the Haldane, as the first occupants of these houses, about 1954-55.

As a footnote here, the house I grew up in was a 3 story tenement building built by Scottish Special Housing Association, we left a decrepit single end in Alexandria to go there. The only reason we were allocated it was the “key workers” from the tail of the bank refused tae live up a close and wanted front and back door housing, they insisted they were used to better than a brand new tenement building lol.

The person in charge of the Torpedo Factory was a naval officer, and it was very much a naval establishment, albeit an industrial one. They were also one of those employers that ben afflecks weren’t much welcomed and I can’t recall any of my school mates winning an apprenticeship there even though we all sat their entrance exam. Membership of the famed “Big Hoose” was a prerequisite for employment, now there were Catholics employed there but they actually transferred up fae the tail o’ the bank.

In the 1950’s and 60’s it was working on the latest, wire-guided torpedo, and the Russians actively sought information about that torpedo. A couple of spy rings were unmasked at the RN Development Base at Portland and in London – the Krogers and the admiralty clerk, as he was described, Vassal, went to jail for many years for spying on work, part of which was carried out at Alexandria.

Ironically, the torpedo never really worked properly (but even that information would have been helpful to the Russians) and that was no doubt one of the reasons why the Labour government decided to place future torpedo programs with Plessey, and close the RNTF in the late 1960’s.

This did not have an immediate impact on employment, because Faslane Naval Base had already opened by this time, and Coulport was shortly to follow.

Another wee bit of useless trivia, the keyboard player in Gerry and The Pacemakers left the group after its heyday and joined the RN, he was at one time stationed at Faslane.

There were jobs for all of the RNTF workers who wanted to go to work in these bases. Most would probably have chosen to transfer anyway, but the government eased the way with private coaches, paid travel time, etc, and a big majority chose to go.

The Base as it’s known locally was not the most sought out place of employment back in the days of “full employment” so they struggled to get a workforce, hence the sectarian policies of the establishment in Alexandria disappeared and plenty of Catholics work there now.

In fact my brothers’ last job, he served his time in Singers, before leaving the country was at the RNTF and a couple of lads he emigrated with also worked there, all St Pats Dumbarton FPs. A wee bit of humour here, one Monday morning after a night on the batter, he grabbed one of my jackets and headed out to work, as he was entering the gated premises the wee gate man shouted him over, pointed tae his lapel and said “you cannae go in there wearing that son, it was a “Remember Hiroshima CND” lapel pin, hilarious working in a torpedo factory wearing a “Ban the Bomb” badge.

Plessey, who had won the electronic torpedo work, after receiving a lucrative deal from the Labour Party to relocate there, took over the Torpedo factory to carry out other commercial electronics work.

Although it was never specifically said so, this was probably part of the torpedo deal, as was the fact that they could leave Alexandria as soon as decently, or even indecently, possible. Also, the government changed in 1970 when the Conservatives unexpectedly beat Labour, and they may well have felt no loyalty to any private or secret deal.

Plessey announced in 1971 that they were going to close the Torpedo Factory. A work-in by the 250 employees ensued for a number of weeks.

The workers had unanimously taken the decision to immediately ask the management to leave, then to lock the gates and stage a sit-in, because they had not received their final pay packets.

This work to rule was actually a sit in similar to Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, in an area once known as “Little Moscow” it was gratifying to see that the committee was comprised of different faiths and no faiths also the union convenor was a regular attendee at Our Lady & St Marks in the town.

They were not in the strongest position as, unlike the Clyde Shipbuilders there was no more production on their site, only the machinery remained which the workers had been keeping up the maintenance of. But they decided they could bargain on the basis of preventing it from being moved out for use elsewhere.

This last minute decision had been forced on them, having had bad prevaricating advice at every previous stage from union officials. When the occupation of the factory was decided on, however, the whole community rallied around in this small town of 8,000, to keep the factory occupiers fed and entertained. The workers had to maintain their occupation over Christmas and were kept supplied with dinner and all the other cheer possible in the circumstances.

As distinct from the UCS ‘work-in’, the action of the Plessey workers has been greeted with great hostility from the management and the police, and this indicates the significance and important lessons to be learned from this struggle.

The Plessey workers recognised that it was a political struggle as well as industrial, and this could be seen from the banners demanding “Heath Out” all around the factory perimeter, unlike the UCS yards.

prime minister heath was the main hate figure of the shouts and banners from all delegations and not just on that demonstration but throughout the country.

Eventually the workers pulled back and Plessey were allowed to leave but not before they proceeded to strip the plant lock stock and barrel, not even a screw or nail was left. And that’s what you are allowed to do when you contribute heavily to the tory party.
