Fans will be at Hampden, you can bet their lives on it

406

Politics is very much at play in football these days.  With Boris Johnson indicating yesterday that he expects up to 10,000 fans inside football stadiums from 17 May, you can expect his Holyrood shadow to propose a similar plan, perhaps a week later/earlier, as has been her way for 11 months.

If the 17 May date feels arbitrary, it is not.  Euro 20201 fixtures get underway a month later, offering populist governments a way to compare how far along the recovery road their surviving citizens are.  Governments in London and Edinburgh will permit domestic fans to attend games just in time for their flag waving opportunities.

There will be fans at Wembley and Hampden, irrespective of what’s going on in public health, you can bet their lives on it.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

We called for it, we got it. The vast majority of us called for it without the personal insults. NFL, YNWA.

The king is dead, long live the King. Whoever that will be.

Some good posts last night, but let’s not underestimate our appeal. We have so much to offer that teams like Burnley can never come close to.

The opportunity to make us a force in Europe again.

A world class facility at Lennoxtown that needs totally revamped or replaced.

A Celtic man at the heart of European football, Peter Lawwell.

One of the best football grounds and infrastructure in these islands.

Legendary status of the club, legendary football nights and iconic allure.

A passionate support, one of the biggest in these islands that needs rejuvenated. ( And perhaps the opportunity to re-educate some of our younger ones )

    Geography and excellent transport links.

A very competitive renumeration package paid for by the renewal of season tickets.

A perfect springboard to further opportunity.

We have head hunted the best there is in the field in Dominic Mckay. A man who has a tremendous record in all commercial rugby activities from Murrayfield to Scotstoun.

Forget priming ourselves for a back of the bus appointment, let’s think big. Employ a manager befitting of our status and one who is ready to exploit the new opportunities that will become apparent in due course.

A fantastic beginning awaits, let’s seize the moment.

    HH to all.

  2. Lenny gone,it had to happen,5 months too late .Hopefully he.will find peace and happiness from this day on

Now Lawwell should be shown the door ,put him on garden leave, just get him out of the club.

    Bankier GTF

The players that want to leave ,GO

    Roll on next season HH

  3. Think a few huns jumping on the hate NL bandwagon….of course they hated him …..I’ve never seen anyone wind them up as he could….their hatred was mainly down to him being not scared or cowering in front of the most vicious campaign ever witnessed in Scottish football….maybe all football……………for that alone..never mind him being a multiple champion he’ll always be a hero and legend to me.

  4. AT

from last night thanks. I’m good. HH

Just shows the state of the board , that he resigned and wasn’t sacked along with Kennedy and Strachan as they are part of the problem.

As I said yesterday, excited about next season

  5. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

maybe NFL can take comfort in the fact that they booed Fergus Mccann, so he’s in good company.

-The Celtic scarf doesn’t shrink to fit inferior supporters [ can’t speak for the customers].

  6. lets all do the huddle on

the board and NL managed to keep the major players at the start of this season thinking that would be a good strategy for squad consistency to keep us on the road to the 10

i dont think you can blame them for that

as it happens it didnt turn out a very good idea because the players that wanted away then played like they didnt want to be there

the boards bigger failing was not acting months ago when it was obvious the season was going wrong

  7. Imo Gavin Strachan should have taken over on an interim basis. He demonstrated commitment and encouragement in the few games in was in charge.

John Kennedy is part of the malaise.

  8. I thought my scarf was shrinking when in fact it was just my neck gettin’ bigger.

    One downside to lockdown.

  9. GREENPINATA

That thought crossed my mind too.

Makes me think Kennedy’s tenure will be as short as can be.

  10. Is it just Neil Lennon who has resigned, or is he taking his backroom staff with him as well?

Oh hang on, this is Celtic, going for 10 in a row, he didn’t have his own backroom staff.

  11. NL did not have the ability of BR and the downturn started when BR left. It may have been a slow downturn but it was constant. He has suffered more personal abuse than any person in Scottish football and I admire him for his ability to function on a daily basis. However I think losing the players will be more about players demands for 10 bonus not being met. Time will tell.

Best thing for the club AND Lenny. Some of the loudmouths on here with their bile and vitriol are beyond words. We all said it was overdue, his leaving ,but to listen to some of the comments, made me,personally, ashamed .

We will see in the games to come, with JKs selections, how things were in the dugout.Did he have ideas not listened to.Did he have team selection ideas, ignored.

What about Strachan.I did tell anyone who would listen, during the Ivan Toney saga, that Peterbro thought he was fantastic. He was one of the reasons Toney hung out for a Celtic move. Was his input ignored.8 games to find out.

Anyway, good luck Lenny. What the man endured simply by doing his job for the team he loved, his life threatened, assaulted several times, police protection, having to move your family because of threats, all forgotten by the ungrateful element in our support, forever to their shame.

I always loved our support, but, not so much now.We also have a dark underbelly, far to similar to the Huns across the City, and its been on display, far too often this season.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Well said that man.

This blog has become so intolerant to anyone with different views recently its a hard read at times. People come on every day to slate the blog meister on the very forum he gives them just because he doesn’t write what they want him to write and god help you if you have different views on politics, called out as a troll, regardless of the fact you are allowed a different view.

I was genuinely disappointed on the day that we won the treble treble when I heard that Neil had been appointed, I really hoped we would go for a progressive coach, maybe with a different structure in place. The writing was on the wall this season as early as August, with our disastrous Champions League efforts, baffling team selections and substitutions and poor recruitment.

The board are complicit for keeping a good man, out of his depth this season, in a job he clearly was no longer able to perform, calling out players as early as August who “didn’t want to be here”, he lost the dressing room and then the plot. Should have been gone latest last October to try to save the season.

Good luck and god bless Neil for the future, thanks for everything, pity it had to end this way, you’ll always have a place in this Celtic supporters heart.

  13. Bhoy From The Boyne on

I suspect NL was told just this week that club intend to bring in a new manager/head coach for next season.

He then choose to resign immediately.

Good luck to him, like Bada Bing I had lost some admiration for him past few months.

I even said on here few weeks ago that I would consider him the man who lost 10iar. My anger has since resided and I think he will be better remembered as playing his part in securing the quadruple treble.

The quadruple treble is a better domestic achievement than 10iar anyway :-0

    I wish NL well.

  14. Scullybhoy & Turkeybhoy,

I agree with you both. Results weren’t good enough so I’m glad that we are moving on, however I’m sad for Neil.

He’ll always be welcome at Celtic Park in my eyes and can hold his head high.

  15. All the best to Neil Lennon , thanks for the good times .

Carefull what you wish ( scream ) for ….

“Don’t confront me with my failures, I had not forgotten them.”

  16. Re Kennedy,

Will the bookies be paying out – will he have enough games? I was going to cash out my 100 bitcoin and lump it on him…

Also, I wouldn’t be expecting our performances to be getting any better. The same players will be playing for a manager most know they’ll not be working under next season, so why burst a gut now?

Though hopefully I’m wrong (about the not trying bit 😬)

  17. Mowbray. Delia. Lennon All picked by Mr bonus man. And he stays till June and gets his bonus as debt free and 19m cash in bank

Remember the days of CQN being 1st to know what was going on

Maybe someone is choking on their succulent lamb delivered from an area with a heated driveway

Spin kept mr bonus man in a position 8 years longer than he should

Some people should be looking in the mirror

  18. Well thank God it’s over at last. I never wanted Neil Lennon appointed full time and myself and others were proved to be right. His appointment was a self fulfilling prophecy. He didn’t have the ability to the job. People are lamenting our failure to win The Ten. While that is disappointing, my main grievance has always been about our demise and lack of ambition to be a force in Europe.

He was appointed with indecent haste on the showers at Hampden, the cheap option, even though we had banked £9.5m from the departure of Brendan Rodgers. Celtic are, and always have been, a parsimonious club. We’ll boast about saving a £million even if it costs us £10m. Winning domestic trophies is nice but no one from any other country sees any achievement in us racking up domestic baubles. The proving ground is in Europe. If we showed ambition and re-established ourselves as a team that could qualify for the Champions League group stages year after year and reach the last 16 regularly and/or reach the last 8 of the Europa League when we don’t do that then we’d find that the domestic trophies will take care of themselves. It’s beginning to happen across the city and has only taken them 5 years or so to get into a strong position to enable them to establish themselves as a team to be feared. We are no longer feared and haven’t been for a long time. When a team is drawn against us in Europe, their manager talks about how difficult it’s going to be against such a famous club, then tells everyone ‘but we have hope’ and then comes to Celtic Park and knocks Celtic out. That’s how far we’ve fallen and it’s like Groundhog Day.

For those citing Barcelona, I’ll cite Sion, Braga, Utrecht, Cluj, Copenhagen, Ferencvaros and Sparta Prague. The playing of Calmac at left back against Cluj, no strikers against Ferencvaros but two of them on the bench. Remember those things?

I also feel that Celtic are acting cynically in regard to the timing of the announcement that the club has parted company with the manager. This could have been done far earlier in the season and it might have been possible to avoid the humiliating defeats in Europe and domestically. Who knows, we might have been able to save the league. Before the game kicked off against Ross County on Sunday night, Celtic had played the exact same number of league games as Sevco. We were 15 points behind. 15 points behind. We lost 12 points in January alone. This league could have been saved by a competent manager but it’s too late now. Season tickets need to be renewed. That’s now the concern of the men who have kept us in the dark all season. No real communication with the fans. We don’t matter ………… until season ticket renewal time that is.

I’ve decided not to renew, even though Lennon has now gone (far too late in the day) until I see what structural changes are made, who they appoint and which players are leaving and who is being brought in. I would appeal to others to do the same. If I lose my seat in the process then que sera, sera. I’ll have to content myself buying tickets for individual games.

  19. It should have been a total clear out of back room staff and coaching staff. Unfortunately no one of any decent standing wants the job. This could be a run of 3 or 4 titles for the Huns if they throw money at it.

  20. GREEN PINATA, well said. Onwards and upwards.

For myself, I didn’t think 10 in a row was the be all and end all. Our first 9 was a far greater achievement. 1970 was a far greater year, which we often forget as we lost the final.

  21. One for the Old Firm Fans to cheer.

    5-year European coefficient

The first two years the Huns started with a Zero and 0.25 (presumably Pedro in the ditch). They have accumulated 28.000 in last 3 seasons and can still add to that number this season.

They have now closed the gap to 5.750.

Celtic have 34.000 to their 28.250.

Our season coefficient numbers over last 5 years are 7.00, 8.00, 6.00, 10.00 and 3.00.

Operation Short Head looks like coming back to bite us on the behind.

  22. “Rodgers was amazing”

    “Kennedy is no good”

“But Rodgers wanted Kennedy at Leicester”

“Rodgers doesn’t know what he’s doing”

  23. TOSN 10.41

    Good summary

Personally, I wanted change after Cluj. Not due to my initial volatile reaction but due to all the weaknesses I and all Celtic fans I know, could see in the manager (and captain) were clear as day

I would add that the lack of investment in players under Rodgers was the start of the current slide. I really don’t know whether it was due to him chasing 2-3 really good players and not getting them but the loans in 2019 were clear evidence he wasn’t going to sign just anybody .

We very quickly reverted to spending a lot of money on multiple average players under Lennon. most of whom were not trusted to get a game. Combination of Lawwell and Lennon culpable IMHO.

If the 30m had not been spent, I think Lennon would still be here for the ‘re-build ‘ he talked about on Sunday. He had 30m to rebuild and it didn’t work. You don’t get that twice (Rodgers took a fair bit of criticism on here for wasting just 1m on Compper; examples from Liverpool days were used as back up)

If he had players foisted on him, he should have started looking or another job earlier; and said so

I also can’t help thinking that the pay cuts for current players vs new contracts for new players played a part in the squad disquiet. If online pay figures are to be believed, we have not managed that well – very top heavy and regular players having big differentials

The last few managers were contractually obliged or preferred not to talk about what went wrong (if applicable) so I suspect we will never know the full truth

    Hail Hail
