Fantastic Juninho sensationalism

859

Celtic have been dragged into a former club’s scandal today by Scotland’s former best-selling daily newspaper, who have completely misrepresented issues surrounding the registration of Juninho.

The newspaper makes the astonishing and completely inaccurate claim that the “SPL have revealed they decided not to investigate Celtic’s EBT payment to Juninho”.

The SPL have investigated Celtic’s EBT payment to Juninho.  They found Celtic acted absolutely in line with the rules and this week issued a statement confirming this.  To tell people otherwise is recklessly inaccurate.

A front page statement proclaims:

“Hoops in clear because Juninho only received cash AFTER he left the club”

Utter nonsense.  It’s a bit like saying:

“Hoops in clear because Juninho’s name begins with the letter J”

A true reflection would read:

“Hoops in clear because they discharged the registration and entire employment process of Juninho in a correct manner and no differently than the way every other SPL club has registered players”

When Juninho “received the cash” has nothing whatsoever to do with Celtic being “in the clear”.  It is, frankly, an embarrassing attempt to pander to the paranoia of others and betrays a fundamental lack of knowledge.

The newspaper also dedicated all-but-one column of their back page, and part of an inside page, to the ‘story’ of how Celtic “didn’t end up in the dock”.  Compare this to the coverage the same newspaper gave to the actual SPL statement on Juninho, released in an earlier attempt to dampen-down ill-informed paranoia, which received a tiny, 35-word, 1-inch back page note and a single column inside the paper.

Throughout recent weeks a basic misunderstanding of the legality of EBTs appears to have taken root in some minds.  It is as though some mass psychological phenomenon is at play.  Or maybe it’s just a deliberate attempt to confuse the easily confused?

EBTs are not against football, or specifically, player registration, rules.  This is accepted as fact by anyone even vaguely familiar with the rules, yet we have some, who should know better, tell us that Rangers’ EBTs were recorded in their annual accounts, as though this is some defence against player registration charges, or that others should join them ‘in the dock’, because they used an EBT.

The matter in hand is not the use of EBTs, it’s about player registrations.  You can pay players in EBTs, folding notes or Dutch tulip bulbs, as long as you register him correctly.  And pay your tax.

Player registration rules are categorically clear, clubs must register all contracts with the SFA and SPL.  All monies due in relation to football must appear on those contracts.  Juninho’s contract was registered correctly.

On this issue, Celtic are exposed to the joint analysis of other 11 SPL clubs and the other 93 SFA clubs (counting both Ibrox based clubs), who control the rules and their scrutiny.

There are limits to what an employer can publicly reveal about a former employee’s personal financial details, but Celtic have revealed all facts concerning Juninho’s employment to the SFA and SPL.

Their conduct was investigated, was found to be absolutely and completely impeccable AND in line with SFA advice on player registration.

All I am wondering about is, should we be happy that those who should be planning for some serious headwinds are instead following a ridiculous wild goose chase?

I think so.  That being the case, what are people trying to divert attention from?  Hmmm.

Last week I met John Maguire, managing director of Celtic Development Pools. John’s been there for 30 years, the enthusiasm for youth player development is tangible when you listen to him talk. He’s at the coal face, raising money for the enormous youth development project which brings players like James Forrest into the club, and also polished Tony Watt into the exciting talent he is.

The ‘Pools predate my time but today’s fabulous harvest of young talent was made more possible by the Paradise Windfall, which now pays £15,000 each home game and has been the largest lottery in world football for years. Income from the Pools and Paradise Windfall generates around £1.5m each season.

The coaches at Lennoxtown (and most fans) know how important it is for Celtic’s youth scouting and development to be the very best it can be. It has to be world class. For the guys at the Pools office, the challenge is clear, fund this ambition.

To this end, this weekend the Development Pools launch TikPick. For £1 you can win a cash prize for predicting 10 results. It’s not a lot of money and none of it will go towards putting fuel in a £100k motor car. This is a grass-roots level investment in our future.  Go take a look here.

It’s one thing for an ignorant and ill-informed knuckledragger to spout p*sh because they are fed a diet of p*sh.

It’s quite another thing for cretins who write in newspapers or run new football clubs to p*sh into the mouths of their pet knuckledraggers, knowing that p*sh will go straight into the void where their brain should be.

It’s a kind of vile interdependence, I suppose but it really shouldn’t be allowed. I hope Celtic are going to insist on the daily toilet roll printing an apology and a more accurate (or should that be truthful?) version.

Manager: Squad is boosted for domestic return

By: Laura Brannan on 14 Sep, 2012 14:58

THE Celtic squad have reassembled after the international break and with the exception of Georgios Samaras, all have returned fit and ready for the weekend´s domestic action.

Neil Lennon has also been boosted ahead of Saturday´s visit to Perth with the news Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew are available for selection again.

The Hoops take on St Johnstone in Saturday´s lunchtime kick-off and the manager is delighted to have two of his key players back in his plans again.

“I´m hoping Scott will be fit for both games,” he said at the pre-match press conference. “We´ve tempered his training. He didn´t train yesterday but came through a light session today.

“He´ll definitely start tomorrow with a mind for Wednesday as well. We have to be guided by Scott and how he´s feeling on a day-to-day basis. We can´t overdo it with him at the minute but hopefully the inflammation he does have in that area will eventually settle down.

“Charlie is good,” the manager added. “He trained yesterday and today so he´ll come into contention for tomorrow. I´m hoping Joe Ledley will be fit for Wednesday. Beram Kayal is not too far away either.”

The manager is also pleased the new arrivals can now settle into the squad and he hopes to see some of them feature this week.

“It´s frustrating that we haven’t had any chance to work with the new boys at all, apart from Lassad who´s not been away on international duty,” he said. “Efe Ambrose and Miku were away, and we only got Miku back today.

“Some of these players could be involved in that game, though. Efe is not here this weekend and it would be doubtful if he would play against Benfica because he has had no time or preparation with us whatsoever. But with regards the other guys then they have every chance of playing.”

And even though Samaras is set to miss Wednesday evening´s UEFA Champions League opener, the manager is delighted the news of his elbow injury isn´t as bad as first feared.

“It´s just ligament damage,” he explained. “We´re hoping he´ll be fit, at least, for the Spartak Moscow game. It´s a huge relief.

“Well, it´s a bitter blow to lose him for the first game because he´s been a huge performer for the team, particularly in Europe, he played his part more than anyone really to get us here. But it softens the blow knowing he won´t be out for long.”

Before that match against Benfica becomes the main focus, though, Celtic have a difficult trip to Perth to contend with. The manager is pleased to be getting back to the competitive football again but is expecting improvements on their last league result – a 2-2 draw with Hibernian.

“We´re looking forward to playing again after a two-week break, and this is a huge week for us,” he continued. “I think in terms of the Champions League the expectation isn’t great but we may surprise a few people in this group and that´s what we´re hoping to do.

“My eye is on St Johnstone tomorrow, though, and I want to play well and win the game. All the expectation was on qualifying for the Champions League, but it feels as if it´s really starting now.

“We´ve sort of tip-toed through the first four games, but now we have the transfer window out of the way we can really set fire to the season. Hopefully we can get the new boys settled as quickly as we can and get them bedded in. They´ll only enhance the squad from what I´ve seen.”

Meanwhile, the manager´s final word went to the Hillsborough report which was released earlier this week, and he shared his sadness on the situation.

“It´s deeply disturbing,” he said. “It´s 23 years too late for the families and the people associated with it. I think there is a huge justification and vindication for Liverpool Football Club, their supporters and certainly the families of the people who passed away.

“It´s very concerning the way it´s been handled by people in authority, I don’t think it´s run its mileage yet. There has to be justice and I think there has to be punishment for the people who deflected the blame elsewhere.”

  10. A couple of weeks ago I posted that my son was going to study at Aberdeen college, after spending most of his life in Germany, and asked for some local info. As it happens he could not get accommodation and was bitterly disappointed, he then managed to get a place at James Watt college in Greenock studying the same subject. He is a mad Celtic fan like his old man. I was hoping some of the Greenock Bhoys could give me some pointers for him about local CSC’s and where he can watch the games safely. We originally come from Renfrewshire so I was not too disappointed about Aberdeen, a bit more relieved to be honest. He would prefer to go to the games when he gets a bit more settled and gets to know a few people locally. Thanks in advance.

I know most of us have a pop at various hacks working for Scotland second biggest selling tabloid. No mean feat in achieving that given the numerical advantage in sales figures the DR once enjoyed over rival publications.

But it is pretty obvious that editorial policy plays a significant part in their copy. Everything from match reports, quotes from Neil Lennon and new pieces on Celtic have a negative slant, while both Ibrox clubs only have good news to offer – even in liquidation.

Market research has obviously identified their core readership and it is to them the paper panders.

A quick run down of choices for your son . There is the Greenock Celtic on Laird Street in the town centre across from Tesco big club runs a few buses always thought it would be easier to join the masons than that club don’t use it myself but it would be a starting point , there is The Greenock Shamrock they travel out of The Black Cat, I think again on Laird Street good bunch they dont stand on ceremony . The Greenock travel Club out of the Lorreto next To St Mary’s in Gourock there is The Emerald out of the Royalle social club great bunch good guys club sells reasonably priced beer yes I travel with them when I can. In Port Glasgow you can practically throw a stick in the town centre and hit a Celtic supporters bus it’s that sort of town. Hope that helps.

  21. I am a (thank God!) retired primary school headteacher. My last post was in a large school in a big housing scheme with, shall we say, many ‘challenging’ children (or little Bs when recalling events over wine on a Friday evening).

When it came to ‘challenging’ behaviour and it consequences, the reactions of the children varied.

There was the ‘fair cop, guv’ response. OK, I did it and I’ll take the punishment. They were by and large children who were rarely in trouble.

Next came ‘deny and then admit.’ They were the ones who at first denied they were at fault, but succumbed to the evidence and took the hit, albeit with often a grumble or two.

The third lot were absolute deniers – “it wisnae me …” and no matter how much they were presented with the evidence “Ah didnae dae it.” Any punishment was responded to with outrage and sometimes refusals, which led to even more grief for them. Most of these children never ever admitted to any wrongdoing and would probably have come through the Spanish Inquisition still declaring their innocence.

Allied to this behaviour was ‘deny and accuse, ’when more than one child was involved – “it wasnae me, it wis him.” In a fight, for example, even with cast iron evidence from a host of other children or witnessing adults, it was always the other ones’ fault and again nothing would induce them to accept guilt.

More worrying was the “I’ll get you” threat to other child accusers. Most times these were empty threats, but sometimes led to actual violence after school.

Time and again punishment by myself, senior staff or class teachers was never fair – the world was out to get them.

Many of the parents mirrored their children’s attitudes and getting them to admit to their offsprings’ anti-social behaviour was often impossible. A lot of these parents had been to the school and were remembered by longer-serving staff as being as difficult as the current generation. And so it continued in a vicious circle.

Of course we tried a lot of positive initiatives which did bear fruit, although getting through to some failed miserably.

OK, you know where this is going.

I’m talking, of course, about immature children sometimes acting out of an almost instinctive reaction to their perception of threat, much of it fostered in unhappy early childhood experiences in poorly functioning families.

But it does extend into adulthood. At its worst, we have men who will put women through nightmares by pleading innocence to rape when they know they are guilty. At the very extreme there are the monsters like Robert Black and Peter Tobin who have brought misery to families of murdered children by refusing to plead guilty to their crimes.

I added the last paragraph because the denial, accusations and threats by fans and management at Sevco, Rangers (IA) or whatever pale into insignificance compared to the above.

But the behaviours I have discussed above in children below the teenage stage have all been evident in the Saga which has emanated from Ibrox.

We have had the ‘fair cop, guv’ responses, highlighted by Adam on RTC and his admissions that Rangers (as was) was guilty and had to be punished.

But by and large the vast majority of responses have been the denial, accuse, and, by some, threaten (even to bombs and bullets) ones. But these have not been done by immature kids, but supposed mature, even thought sophisticated, adults – “we never did it,” “it’s aw their fault,” “it’s no fair,” “we’ll get them.”

A case in point, from FF :

Does anyone think that we won’t get a fair crack of the whip from nimmo smith & co ?

    ________________________________________

Over the last few days, there has been a lot of richly deserved criticism of the SPL and the media in their approach to dealing with the EBT matter , but when we finally get down to business before his lordship and 2 QCs does anyone have any reservations that we won’t get a fair hearing ?

There has been some unsubstantiated concerns expressed on these threads over the week regarding the selection of the panel and all I would say to Leggo and anyone else is if you’ve got anything concrete about that, bring it to the club’s attention and let our lawyers assess its evidential value.

Assuming that nothing of significance arises concerning the fitness of these gentlemen to preside, I have no concerns at all that we will get a fair crack of the whip.

I am seriously concerned about the suggestion that Charles Green does not intend to have legal representation in attendance. I regard such a proposal as quite absurd. It is absolutely critical that we have the best counsel money can buy representing rangers’ best interests throughout these proceedings. What if an essential document hasn’t been lodged ? Or a question of admissisibility arises ? (it’s conceiveable that there could be matters in the documents which were unfairly obtained and should not be considered). There are innumerable possibilities of situations from which sharp counsel might make hay, and I am suspicious of those who propose to allow the hearing to proceed without rangers being legally represented.

So my bottom line is that I believe that we will get a fair hearing AND that it is imperative that we instruct the best counsel available.

A reasonable post from a reasonable person.

I do think we need to know about and respond to things like the DR story Paul 67 refers to in his article ,where these cretins cross a line between being anti-Celtic, and being injurious.

The whole tone of the Juninho EBT article suggests that what Celtic did was rule breaking but that they only got off with it by sheer luck, or because of a loophole.

It’s all very well to say ignore them, but they need to be pulled up for this kind of cr&p
