Faux civility and pathetic winners

169

I don’t know what’s worse, football fans who crave affirmation so much they indulge in faux acts of civil spirited behaviour, and who tell themselves they are loved by everyone, or a set who even though their side win their Euros group, boo and throw plastic cups at their manager.

The reality is, no one in the UK really cares about international football, at least, not in the way we care about our clubs.  If it was Celtic, you would not be caught dancing to disco music to try to convince yourself you were not a deeply miserable person (I’m not talking about you, obviously) and it wouldn’t matter how we topped a group, only that we actually achieved the feat.

The evidence is overwhelming that Scotland football fans were on holiday in Germany.  Good luck to them, I doubt there is a great deal of crossover between them and those who buy club season tickets.

England fans protesting about how uninspiringly they topped their group is even more pathetic.  They have qualified for two major finals in history (both on home territory).  That’s fewer than Czechoslovakia, which only existed for 74 years, and one less than the Czech Republic.  England fans have as poor a grasp on their own history as Davie Moyes has on the Czech-Slovak dissolution.

  1. Fans on the waiting list need to ask why the board can’t put 2 tiers on the ends of the Jock Stein.and the Lisbon Lions areas at each end of the main stand??

Last season there was a lot of comments on CQN about the fixture schedule first round giving us a lot of aways games against the perceived bigger teams whilst Rangers had these teams at home and how it was to disadvantage us.

This season Rangers have the following away games in the first round of fixtures:

Hearts, Celtic, Dundee United, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Dundee.

I don’t think Celtic will ever increase the capacity.

Just look at the number of empty seats around at a lot of the games and domestic games not on the ticket.

If Celtic increase capacity to 70,000 people, the result is that there is no need to buy a season ticket in order to get tickets for big games.

Result might be fewer season tickets sold and poor attendances at less attractive or inconveniently timed fixtures. Probably end up back at the days of 20-30 thousand at most games as people can pick and choose.

Financially have 55k season tickets sold and a waiting list than six sell out games and the rest having relatively small crowds.

Fergus set the capacity of the stadium with a view to having it almost full every game while still keeping a demand for tickets.

  13. GGHS.

as long as there are old firm fixtures, the old firm fans will buy season books.

go to 70000 capacity and the model will continue to sell out.

    delia – 52.000 and a closed tier.

ange/dan/return of rangers – 80000 sell out and a waiting list of 7000.

the fact that thousands of book holders dont bother turning up is neither here nor there.

Phoned and emailed. Said I would go to ticket office, very pleasant lady told me not to bother, sold oot. She said they could be in touch before season starts, people not getting finance etc. Oh well, I move on.

  16. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I believed our “quality” signings would happen very close to the transfer window closing. This is because players and agents often wait until the last moment to secure the best deals.

I had hoped that the first match against Sevco would be scheduled for September, ideally as the fifth game, rather than the fourth game as in previous seasons. This timing would have allowed our new “quality ” signings to join the team and either start the game or be available on the bench to make an impact later.

However, with the game now scheduled for August 31st, the SPFL has likely negated that advantage. Oh well, I’m sure it won’t be a significant issue.

  17. Man Utd consider renaming Old Trafford

Manchester United are considering a number of different options regarding possible naming rights of Old Trafford, whether they choose to refurbish their current stadium or build a brand new ground.

Following the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a taskforce has been established by the FA Cup winners to explore redeveloping the Old Trafford area, including whether to overhaul their existing stadium or build a new world-class facility.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

Would Celtic consider doing such a thing?

  18. It’s the stadium Celtic fans call Paradise, and it’s been standing on the same site for more than 100 years.

Having been forced to move from the site of the original stadium on London Road when the rent went from £50 to £450, the new ground was built in a disused brickyard 200 yards from the original Celtic Park.

Inaugurated with a match against Renton in 1892, the stadium has been through several changes since then to become the modern, state-of-the-art arena it is today.

I’m not emotionally invested in the national team. I despair of international breaks and cringe at the ‘tartan army’.

I used to love the WC and Euros finals until the money men bloated them out with dross… like Scotland.

I scoffed at the hype around Scotland’s great achievement in qualifying. That was true in 1992 when only 8 nations made it. Not know when literally half of Europe qualifies and those that didn’t largely comprise minnows like Andorra and Gibraltar.

But my main interest in international football remains watching England fail after they hype themselves up. They have lucked out with the draw. They may well make it to the final before getting scudded by Spain.

  21. AaHow much of a spineless moron can Doncaster be.Never saw him throwing a comforting arm around Dundee, when they had to stump up money for match postponements, but, willing to help out any way he can for a mob that have been itching to get him sacked for years.

  22. Superbru Round 3 Update

Following the conclusion of the group stages and the departure of some inadequate teams like Scotland and some unlucky ones like Ukraine, we can update before the knock out stages.

Our Round 1 best performer over all opening matches was Kelvinbhoy with 15 pts.

Our Round 2 best performer over all middle matches was Borgo67 with 16 pts.

Our Round 3 best performer over all final matches was MWD1967 with 13 pts.

    This leaves our Leaderboard as:-

    4 Hamiltontim- 30.5 pts

    5. MWD1967- 30 pts

And down at the bottom where their progress is obviously affected by Houthi rebels delaying steel deliveries from China with Euro predictions contained within, are:-

    snapper1969- 16.5 pts

    James Cant- 18.5 pts

    Double standards by Doncaster

“Unfortunately these things do happen. I used to run a club and we had to build a stand, I worked very closely with the league to ensure our fixtures went ahead with only three parts of the ground available.

Now the fixtures are out we’ll be liaising with Rangers. Obviously they’ve got a far better handle on the works than we do and we’ll do our best to work with them to try and get them through what’s clearly a difficult situation.

We’ve been very impressed with the way the new chairman John Bennett has tried to strengthen relationships across the game and we’ll certainly be looking to work with him and his team to be as flexible as we can be whilst being fair to everyone else.”
