Faux precipice, the £30m man, fan shakedown

1204

Lots going on today, we’ll maybe have a second blog this evening on Craig Gordon, but for now….

Last month I wrote that Dave King’s Fit and Proper issue was a faux precipice.  If he was not found Fit and Proper he, “could easily appoint his own people to the PLC board, he would be able to attend board meetings and bark whatever orders necessary.”  This issue would not prevent King from investing in the club, or from gaining the kind of influence Mike Ashley had until recently.

There are no SFA rules which could prohibit an unfit and improper person from being the 100% owner of a club.  The matter is in the very literal sense, a formality.

Still, in passing such a tainted convict, who has already sat on the board of a club which sailed into liquidation, was subject to considerable criticism from an SPL judicial report, and had his honesty derided by a South African judge, the SFA, have made an improper decision.  It’s a marginal call whether our man is better working on the inside or taking nothing to do with it.  Neither option is satisfactory, the only permanent resolution to this scourge of the ages is to leave Scottish football behind.

For what it’s worth, I think King is utterly brilliant.  Sounding a bit like Rhett Butler in an interview with the Daily Record, he said, “Quite frankly I don’t give a damn what people say or write about me.  I will do whatever I think is best for me. The media and the fans will make no difference to my success or failure.”

Stand down all you psychological profilers.

The guy is perfect, how did he convince so many fans he was good for them?  Wait, I remember.  In the same article he said:

“The only way we can access that revenue is to compete with Celtic. To do that, in our first year back we are going to have to treble our wage bill as a minimum. Depending on how Dermot Desmond responds we may need to make it four times bigger.”

“First year back……. treble our wage bill…… minimum….. may need to make it four times bigger”.

He went on, “I have lost £20m in Rangers already and I’m happy to lose another £30m because I love the team”.

£30m.  Go for it, Dave, we’d all love to see it.  That would teach Celtic a lesson.

Here’s a few predictions.  The No Surrender to a perceived enemy days will be back in spades.  They need to dislodge Celtic, its influence and its support.  Expect bad PR when a fan illegally disposes of litter and the onslaughts against our CEO to continue.  They have not been able to lay a glove on Ronny for months, but wait until we draw a game at home.  Players should avoid camera phones, and Scott Brown should never sit down in public.  Anthony Stokes will be cautioned against use of a flagrantly Irish accent.

Whatever money is available will flood into the coffers in a desperate attempt to close the gap with Celtic, but there will be no trebling of wages or £30m investment.  Instead, the fans will be asked to stump up the big numbers.  In the event Mike Ashley is held in abeyance, the window between now and the money running out is critical.  I expect nothing more than a shambles, they don’t have the money or the intelligence to take Celtic on, but this is their one big play.  Celtic are ready.

Fancy winning two tickets for premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Trophy Day on Sunday, courtesy of Magners?  To win, email me the name of the Celtic keeper who won Sportswriters’ Player of the Year this season.  Put the name in the SUBJECT field of your email and send to celticquicknews@gmail.com

COMPETITION CLOSES AT 21:00 tonight, 20 May.

There was some stunning news today.  Mary’s Meals, a charity founded in Scotland 13 years ago, now feed over 1m children each day.  Almost three thousand of them are in schools funded by you in Malawi.  While entering the competition you might want to donate £1 to the Mary’s Meals pot here.

This success is partly yours, so read what you’ve done.

  1. Livibhoy,

As I said no one is giving up their season ticket to hurt the club but you continue to say they are.

Sort of in the same boat with you there mate.

I sent an enquiry off about a weekend season ticket as Sunday games actually suit me.

My boy is 3 in July. He has been to a couple of games. One was in freezing weather and I won’t be doing that again.

I proposed a season ticket for families or even people who travel distances for weekend matches.

I have had a response and they are willing to look at options.

Better to have the ground filled as much as possible for most games at the weekend than not at all. It also leads to getting a full season ticket in time.

That were my thoughts on it anyway.

    Let’s be clear on this.

Some people are giving up their season ticket due to the SFA or corruption or both? Right?

Giving up the season ticket is because they will no longer fund a bent game? Right?

Does the with holding of their monies help or hurt Celtic?

“Do I seem to you….like someone who wouldn’t be active in opposing something I feel strongly about?”

I have no idea because I don’t know you.

If you are doing something constructive about it, I’m sure you would let us know as that would further your aims.

Yes I have and do lead an interesting life, and you have made your point clearly, accusing people of fear when none is shown is disingenious.

    —————————————————————————-

Disingenuous again is it? Not if I genuinely believe that some people might be fearful of Dave King’s involvement in Rangers. Which I do.

I’ve given up taking the car now. As you know going around the by-pass then the M8 is a pain in the ar$e especially for mid week games.

I now use the supporters bus which means I have to go for a pint before the game, damn……..

  7. oneofthe70percent on

Season book holders do not fund a bent game, all the money goes to celtic,in the past they did when away teams got a cut of the gate

  8. Canamalar –

Apologies for carrying this onto this thread – don’t want you accusing me of cowardice as well as being disingenuous. :-)

BTW – if you want to continue this (fairly pointless) “debate” I suggest we move back to the previous thread. It’s probably boring everyone elase to death.

    Hahahaha

    That sounds a right bind!

I will join a CSC once the Bhoy is able to use the lavvy on his own. The car will do me for now.

I don’t particularly like taking the car to games to be honest.

Needs must I suppose. Always loved travelling by CSC. Great way to follow Celtic.

  10. Livibhoy,

Why do you insist they are withholding that money, they are under no obligation to spend that money other than how they see fit, you make it sound like buying a season ticket is somehow mandatory. It’s not, people will spend their money on what they want, it’s not your or my place to try and put them on a guilt trip because they don’t want a Celtic season ticket.

  11. Just hope its worth Hibs while turning up tonite……..no doubt mccurries ghost will be looking on….if and when required

  12. NatKnow

Just to come back to you on that last one – not quite in your analogy if I used a video streaming site that also hosted child porn I’d be complicit. Bringing it back to football yours is closer to stating if you’ve ever played or organised football you’re complicit.

However just because I don’t agree that Celtic are complicit in the rule bending that doesn’t mean they can’t comment if they feels there’s a need to do so (and they probably should). There may be consequences to that but so be it. As others have stated the club shouldn’t really be a lone voice in all this.

Busy today. Might not get a chance to respond to any reply.

  13. Natknow,

Not at all, listening to you trying to twist and wriggle out of your accusations doesn’t appeal.

  14. Canamalar

Fair enough. Lets agree to disagree.

If they have a season ticket and chuck it then it could be construed as withholding but probably a poor choice of wording from me.

If people are giving up their season tickets and not telling the club why then they can’t take it on board. If 10k fans don;t take up their season ticket because of say the 5 way agreement and the board don;t know that is the reason how do they take it on board and fix it?

People are free to spend their money on what they wnat when they want but when people come on to a forum and tell other people why they are giving up their season ticket then they must expect questioned over it. Surely? No?

Anyway, a decent debate had by all and I am happy to leave you to it today.

    Cheers

  22. Livibhoy, your mention of taking your bhoy to the game and it being frezing triggered off a memory for me.

I took my then 6 year old ghirl to CP for the one and only time to us play the sheep.

Bought her a scarf outside, went to KFC. I even drove to the game!!!

It was baltic way up in the gods section of the North stand and the snow came on.

It soon started. “I’m freezing daddy, can we go”? Over and over until I finally cracked and gave in. (it WAS freezing).

We left the ground with the good ghuys winning 2-0 and walked/carried our way to the

miles away car. Switched on the tranny. Final whistle…. 6-0. I was beelin’.

She’s now a teacher and to this day any mention of Celtic park provokes a muttered “coldest place in the world”.

  23. I think Paul is attempting to walk between the raindrops with this latest article.

On the one hand there is an acknowledgement that the SFA have made an, ahem, improper decision.

The next question should of course be are Celtic going to challenge the said improper decison? That question isn’t asked and of course Celtic will do nothing give they are party to the decision in the first place.

Then Paul shows many of the ways in which corrupt Scottish football and racist Scottish society will attack Celtic. He tells us Celtic are ready.

Really? Given that they are party to the decisions and say absolutely nothing about them and do absolutely nothing I don’t think that can constitute ready.

This is akin to the rallying cry from a general or king just before a big battle which goes along the lines of we will fight them in the trenches, oops sorry I won’t be there. Good luck!

Celtic are party to and propping up this corruption and racism and are doing so for monetary gain. Buying a season ticket on the say. So of your absent general who doesn’t care whether you survive the battle at all is simply propping up the corruption.

I don’t say this lightly at all. I have really struggled to come to terms with not renewing. But yesterday’s farce and celtics continued silence and abject acceptance makes it a bit easier.

Oh Paul – really disappointed in you. You missed out the best one:

“We all believed at the time that the money going into the club was his own money – free funds available to David Murray. I was certainly shocked when I found out that the money David was putting in – unlike mine, which I lost – was the bank’s money.”

The next question should of course be are Celtic going to challenge the said improper decison? That question isn’t asked and of course Celtic will do nothing give they are party to the decision in the first place.

Why should that be the question? its a decision for the SFA and Sevco, not a three way conversation.

Using Campbell Ogilvie as the SFA’s fit and proper bench mark Dave King was always going to be a shoe in.

I mean bank borrowings at the time he invested were “only” £48m. And he “only” had 12 years accounts to pick this up…..

  29. LiviBhoy:

I used to buy stacks of Celtic merchandise, stacks, hundreds of pounds worth at a time. I eventually got pissed of the checkout page defaulting to express delivery which off the top of my head often amounted to about 60 quid a pop. So I would cancel my order.

I was advised to contact the club and make them aware of this, and I did, by impersonal e-mail, I got a response from Celtic, they called me a liar.

I still have the screen dumps of the check-out pages to this day. I think I even raised it in a personal e-mail to Paul67. Don’t know if I still have the e-mails, I’d have to check.

I have read that Calum Murray will be refereeing his final game tonight at Ibrox. Seems to me a helluva lot of refs get their swan song in games involving sevco/ranjurs. Apparently Calum is a Hearts supporter :)))
