Favouritism, bullying and off humour. Then the CEO gets onto Twitter

301

SFA referee Charlie Richmond yesterday told the BBC he was resigning from his role as a top class official citing reasons that will horrify and resonate with many of you.  Speaking last night he said:

“Referee’s committee members, who you would expect to get support from, have told me across the table ‘this is nothing to do with your refereeing ability, it’s nothing to do with your experience but you won’t be getting high profile games because you’re not seen as a team member.

“The fact that you don’t share the same conversation or the same humour doesn’t mean to say you are the bad penny.

“The fact that you don’t share the same conversation or the same humour doesn’t mean to say you are the bad penny.

“In any walk of life a natural progression takes place but the person underneath doesn’t need to stab someone in in the back to advance quicker.

“I received a phone call telling me to watch what I was saying in dressing rooms because this is 10am on a Monday and it’s filtered back already.

“Much more disappointing, is that they are believing that information.”

Coming hard on the heels of last season’s bullying allegations by an official and nature of what was regarded by some as suitable material to joke about in the workplace, the SFA sounds like an old boys club.

SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, tweeted in response: “Referee appointments are based on performance. Would prefer to see consistent under performers ‘retire’ without feeling need to blame others”.

Ouch.  Listen to her.

Charlie Richmond may or may not be a rubbish referee, Mr Regan could easily persuade me of the former, but that is not the point.  It is not the responsibility of the employee to manage the performance review process.  If the organisation manages this process well, the employee becomes an active part of proceedings, even when performance is worthy of criticism.

This situation has not been managed well. It is a corporate failure at an organisation which has been dogged by corporate governance issues for years.

The SFA have been accredited as Investors In People.  The scenario where a senior referee complains to the media about favouritism while the chief executive retorts online about “consistent under performers” (sic) is surely the antithesis of good Investors In People.  It smacks of lousy people management.

If you have underperforming staff, make it clear to them where they are going wrong.  Do so in an inclusive way, ensure those charged with performance communication are able to do so without accusations of favouritism (Richmond) or bullying (Craven), and for goodness sake, ensure the chief exec doesn’t get bitchy on Twitter.

If you or I accused the SFA of behaviour like this we would be dismissed as irrelevant but the organisation needs to take action to ensure there are no more accusations of bullying, favouritism, selective-humour-bonding and executives disrespecting officials on Twitter.

Can you imagine what the very same people would be doing today if Neil Lennon had a go at a referee on Twitter?

On a day when I should be overjoyed at Ross County’s promotion to the SPL I instead find myself depressed and sickened that the competition we all aspire to in Scotland has stooped to such a disgusting proposal.

Lower than low – rewarding a thieving, vile institution at the expense of all things good in our league.

We can’t sink any lower than this.

These proposals are still to be voted and like I said, what investor is going to take on Newco with such Catastrophic losses for 3 years.

The 3 bidders can barely come up with a fee for the Creditors and they have still to pay Whyte for ibrox, murray park, etc.

Another nail in the coffin of Newco as far as I am concerned.

I think that the newhuns team is going to be hugely reduced in quality and numbers next year so with the addition of a ten points deduction they are going to finish lower down the league. Lower down enough so that a 75% reduction in SPL money is less in real terms than if they finished second.

The punishments seem to dovetail with their Euro ban for three years. New owners would need to find enough money to help them for three years.

Year four could see them start to compete at the top if not with Celtic. I think they’re finished competing against us for years unless something is happening offstage that we don’t know about.

If this is us “playing our card” we should have wiped our backside with it instead cause then it wasn’t worth a damn and our club is a disgrace right along with the scum who have just been given the green light to give the taxpayer the finger.

Shameful and shameless in equal measure and an appalling affront to everything football is supposed to be about. I am quite seriously done with it if this comes to pass. There will be no season ticket, no Sky subscription, not now, not in the future, as long as we play in this corrupt league.

This is an absolutely awful moment for the game here. Its leaders have bowed the knee to a club which, for the good of the whole sport, needs humbled and reminded that the rules are not just for other people. These rules have been written to benefit the club which has brought the game to the edge of the abyss. No punishment worthy of the name. Just a scam to let them off.

I am certain the potential buyers of Rangers know full well what these plans mean. They mean simply that the club can dump all its debt and start fresh, and who would not buy into that? They mean the club can run up NEW debts and chase glory, and when the rent comes due dump THOSE debts too.

These rules defeat any PURPOSE in playing by the rules. They are a joke. This league and this country is a joke.

This is the Save Glasgow Rangers Act 2012. Nothing more. This is a charter to save and to benefit one football club, no matter the appalling damage it does to every other, to the reputation of the game and of the integrity of sport itself.

The news outlets are talking about it as a potential punishment. It is not a punishment worthy of the name. Pascal said “Law without force is impotent.” The SPL just demonstrated that even with thirty boxes of Viagra it doesn’t have the brass balls to take on Rangers … and that club has just been confirmed as the only one of any “value” to the league.

Note, this is not a two-club setup any longer. The setup exists for ONE club only.

If Celtic signed up for, or supported, it then this is not the club that was founded in 1888 to help the poor, and it took deserves to sink in the swamp with the rest.

April 30 is potentially the worst day in the history of Scottish football.

The nuclear option for Celtic is to sue the SPL/SFA through the courts.

As I understand it, any association being challenged by a member club through the legal system is banned from competing in UEFA and FIFA competitions.

Bring this to UEFA’s attention. Let them know what a stinking, corrupt cesspit this is.

  11. Staggering stuff from the SPL – legitimizing phoenixing as part of the normal rules of the game. Practices which have left businesses and taxpayers screwed for £hundreds of millions ‘punished’ with nothing more than a 10 point penalty for 2 seasons. Incredible.

What was that about “ethos” that was mentioned on the championship winning pitch on Saturday

Ethos: The disposition, character, or fundamental values peculiar to a specific person, people, culture, or movement

So are we talking Old Firm ethos or Celtic ethos.

    About to find out

    Hail Hail

  15. Paul Clark, joint administrator, said: “As administrators we had hoped to announce today the acceptance in principle of an offer for the purchase of Rangers Football Club, which would be followed by a period of exclusivity while due diligence is undertaken.

“Regrettably, this is not now possible as we were informed over the Easter holiday period that the SPL is proposing to consider at a general meeting on April 30, significant rule changes in relation to clubs which find themselves in an insolvency situation.

“The effect of such revised measures being considered at this juncture is that we, as administrators are duty bound to inform those parties who have submitted bids of the proposed resolutions the SPL intends to consider. Failure to do so would constitute material non-disclosure on our part, which is a serious matter.

“Inevitably, bidders are now considering this information and will have to take a view as to whether it will affect their individual bids as they now stand. The result is a delay in the sale process. We hope to receive feedback from bidders as soon as possible in order for us to take the sale process forward as quickly as we can.

“We fully respect the right of the SPL to review its own rules and regulations and will not comment on the detail of what is being proposed for the meeting on April 30 at this stage. However, the fact that such measures are being considered at such a sensitive point in the sale process at Rangers is disruptive and regrettable. We hope to issue a further update by the end of this week.”

  16. The point is not how these proposals might affect the huns as a newco. That makes no difference. They might be weaker, they might have less money. It doesn’t matter.

This is about the principle that crime shouldn’t pay.

Anyone who supports this disgraceful set of proposals is giving one club carte blance to do whatever it likes knowing that the rules will simply be changed so that it avoids any punishment.

I don’t remember any rule changes being proposed when Gretna went to the wall. No one invited their newco, Gretna 2008, back to the table. But it is different when it involves the establishment team, isn’t it?

  17. Whats needed is a couple of ex referee,s with balls, like hugh adams had the balls to come out and whistle blow , tell it as it is . I don’t think I’m the only one. A 450 mile round trip is a long way to watch a game when even the “new look” SPL/SFA continues to act in such a pro Rangers manner.

The new financial fair play proposals actually leave clubs with no incentive whatsoever to avoid insolvency.

The proposals make insolvency just an everyday hazard of running a football club – just press the “reset,” button and carry on.

Having a problem believing the board have not considered this strategy would be played out.

I noted plenty of times on here the rules will be changed to suit them.

I’m also having problems believing the board were not consulted on the proposals.

Now is a defining moment in our clubs history, have the board got a counter strategy or are they complicit ? the answer to that question we will witness very soon.
